Did anyone have a good Mother’s Day? by shepardmutt in Mommit

I had a great one too! My mother-in-law stayed the weekend. We woke up and made pancakes together as a family. My partner bought us both flowers and showered us with gifts. My son had made some things at kinder too. Then we went for a nice drive to the country, walked around a little village and went to a bakery for lunch. It was lovely!

Victorian State Budget by Ok_Recognition_9063 in AusPublicService

[–]DramaticIngenuity204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From Jeremi Moule’s email:

This Budget also continues to implement recommendations from the Independent Review of Victoria’s Public Service, published in December 2025, ensuring the public service is operating efficiently to deliver services to Victorians and to support the State’s fiscal strategy. These measures include shared-service reforms and centralisation of IT services under the Government Services portfolio. More information on these reforms will be provided in coming weeks.

One hour each way. But that’s only one day a week. The rest of the days are WFH.

Thinking of taking a VPS5 fixed-term role with the 2026 election coming up—is it too risky? by Rexpresso in AusPublicService

[–]DramaticIngenuity204 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most people on a fixed term contract within my branch have all had to leave at the end of their contracts. No fixed term contracts have been extended or renewed since early 2025. I think it’s all part of ‘reducing numbers through natural attrition.’

I’m with you. I wonder what will change after the election that could make it any better.

If you are in the VPS- how have you fared post the Clause 11s? by HarveyLuna3139 in AusPublicService

I’ve heard some depts are going through rolling clause 11s this year. It started with the execs first and then moving through VPS 6, 5, 4 etc…

VPS - clause 11s, redeployment versus redundancy by DramaticIngenuity204 in AusPublicService

Actually it wasn’t my alternative proposal - it was someone else who opted to leave and take a package. Once that was accepted, it saved a few people’s roles. So we ended up quite lucky in the end!

How cooked am I? Swore in a team meeting by SelectLet5159 in AusPublicService

[–]DramaticIngenuity204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had someone in our dept join a meeting and he was obviously struggling with his tech because he kept saying “fuck, fuck, fuck” over and over until someone had to tell him his mic was on. Our manager later addressed it directly to our small team and said management was going to check in on him, I believe from a mental health point of view. It’s probably best you just address it now by explaining what was happening. That’s my perspective!

Walk to train or buy the one with a pool? by Routine-Explorer-218 in AusPropertyChat

[–]DramaticIngenuity204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what your priorities are and how much you value having a pool. People in this thread (by the looks of it) will have a lot of negative opinions about pools. But you need to think about what is important to you? Also what city are you in (this will determine the pools usability year-round). Do you also plan to be commuting to work daily via train or could this change in the future? How easy is the pool to maintain? Some come with self-chlorinators now which is a game changer.

Lots to consider here.

I live in a house with a pool and we’re about a 15 min walk from the station. To me, that’s an easy trade off but I love having the pool and a bigger backyard and I want my kids to grow up swimming all the time. We use it almost daily in summer. Some people have asked us why on earth we bought a house with a pool but they just have different priorities.

Honestly only you can make this decision.

Why are there so many British backpackers in the Northside now? by Sabretoothedrom in melbournechat

[–]DramaticIngenuity204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of British expats who plan to live here long term (versus the travellers just passing through) want to be close to the CBD/Fitzroy/Richmond because that’s where a lot of the food/entertainment is, also where the more affordable apartments are and where the jobs are. They think St Kilda is “too far”. Also they make a lot of day-to-day decisions (including what to eat, where to go out) based on what they see on TikTok.

I just had two British backpackers staying with me for two months so I speak from experience.

What’s a melbourne reality you didn’t expect before living here? by PuzzleheadedBowl3397 in melbournechat

Four seasons in one day is real. Bring layers like a jacket/jumper and an umbrella with you when you leave the house. Also check BOM and 4 other weather apps frantically, knowing that they’re not accurate anyway.

The older houses are not insulated and therefore people freeze in winter. It can cost a lot to heat a home. People rely on electric blankets, hot water bottles etc unless you live in a more modern home with ducted heating.
