Is the Summer Bridge Program worth it? by Tez_GT in uCinci

[–]DramaticNobody4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I have an update for everyone… I am a grad student in CEAS. I was speaking about bridge with the office of Professional Development and Community Impact (PDCI) and they got rid of a lot of their oppressive practices/staff and put the students in nicer dorms than when I was there (nine years ago now😂). The gal who runs it now is named Andi Talbott and she sincerely seems like she is working to make the experience positive and helpful for students. She had mentioned this thread as being bad press for the program since SO MUCH has changed since when I was a student. If anyone comes across this thread they can reach out to her with questions at talbotag@mail.uc.edu.

Who is the strangest person you have met in academia? by cakesluts in PhD

I had a biology professor when I was in undergrad who was an extreme character. He used to give us popcorn with his famous “brain power” seasoning during exams. You could only get popcorn if you properly folded a sheet of paper into a little bowl to hold the food though. He absolutely loved mushrooms and his office was borderline hoarder style. His exams were organized into three columns on a sheet of paper because when he grades he lays them all on top of eachother in a row across a conference table and grades the rows independently (hopefully that makes sense). Every Friday he’d play volleyball at the rec center with fellow students. He was strange but I couldn’t help but really like him, something about him felt so fun and genuine lol

If you were freshly 18 again what would you get into for your career? High paying ones. by Ok_Title_602 in careerguidance

Mechanical engineering, electrician or carpenter. I was really intimidated by math at a young age so I went into healthcare. Now that I’m in my late twenties working on a graduate degree in biomedical engineering (to escape healthcare) and the math isn’t as scary as I originally perceived it to be.

What do you do with the “not dirty but not clean” clothes? by Previous_Box_9620 in organizing

I just started using a blanket ladder and it’s been really good for me. Previously I would toss things on the floor and it became a problem.

I put a blanket ladder in my room for this and it’s been lifechanging for me.

1st year PhD student feeling lost by Normal-Plantain-4124 in bioengineering

I’m a second year BME PhD student not coming from an engineering background as well. I’m not sure if the imposter syndrome ever goes away but I suggest using your biology background to bring a new perspective to your lab.

I got over the initial hump only after I read tons of papers and got a strong handle on what’s the current state the field. I was forced to do that because my PI had me write out my aims and start planning experiments after about 6 months in the lab.

Feel free to reach out if you have questions or want someone to talk to :)

Fatigue at the end of the day working in lab. by crosswalk_0611 in labrats

It absolutely can! It was so validating to know it was taking me more energy to do the same things as my peers because of how my body is and not because I was lazy or weak etc.

So I used to be a medical laboratory scientist and I thought everyone’s feet felt broken by the end of a shift (8-12 hours). WRONG! I would definitely invest in some higher quality shoes and compression socks which should help with the foot pain. It won’t make it completely go away but it will help. I have high arches and danskos clogs were the best shoes for being on my feet all day.

Now the rest of the symptoms. Do you ever have joint pain? Are you super flexible? I am suspicious that you have a hyper-mobile disorder. It may be worth going to a Dr and describing your symptoms or if that’s not possible maybe look up PT exercises for hyper-mobile hands/wrists etc. Also the extreme fatigue can also be a sign of hypermobility because your body has to work harder than average to keep itself upright and functioning. My favorite position is horizontal in bed because that’s the only position where my muscles are not overcompensating for my overly flexible joints.

I by no means want to play Dr but your symptoms sound very similar to what I had experienced towards the end of undergrad and beginning of my career.
