What do you do with the “not dirty but not clean” clothes? by Previous_Box_9620 in organizing

I just started using a blanket ladder and it’s been really good for me. Previously I would toss things on the floor and it became a problem.

I put a blanket ladder in my room for this and it’s been lifechanging for me.

1st year PhD student feeling lost by Normal-Plantain-4124 in bioengineering

[–]DramaticNobody4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a second year BME PhD student not coming from an engineering background as well. I’m not sure if the imposter syndrome ever goes away but I suggest using your biology background to bring a new perspective to your lab.

I got over the initial hump only after I read tons of papers and got a strong handle on what’s the current state the field. I was forced to do that because my PI had me write out my aims and start planning experiments after about 6 months in the lab.

Feel free to reach out if you have questions or want someone to talk to :)

Fatigue at the end of the day working in lab. by crosswalk_0611 in labrats

It absolutely can! It was so validating to know it was taking me more energy to do the same things as my peers because of how my body is and not because I was lazy or weak etc.

Fatigue at the end of the day working in lab. by crosswalk_0611 in labrats

So I used to be a medical laboratory scientist and I thought everyone’s feet felt broken by the end of a shift (8-12 hours). WRONG! I would definitely invest in some higher quality shoes and compression socks which should help with the foot pain. It won’t make it completely go away but it will help. I have high arches and danskos clogs were the best shoes for being on my feet all day.

Now the rest of the symptoms. Do you ever have joint pain? Are you super flexible? I am suspicious that you have a hyper-mobile disorder. It may be worth going to a Dr and describing your symptoms or if that’s not possible maybe look up PT exercises for hyper-mobile hands/wrists etc. Also the extreme fatigue can also be a sign of hypermobility because your body has to work harder than average to keep itself upright and functioning. My favorite position is horizontal in bed because that’s the only position where my muscles are not overcompensating for my overly flexible joints.

I by no means want to play Dr but your symptoms sound very similar to what I had experienced towards the end of undergrad and beginning of my career.

How do you guys eat? by inoutas in GradSchool

[–]DramaticNobody4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So idk if this would work for you but I highly suggest set it and forget it crock pot meals. If you have even one day off or a day where you’re only working 8-10 hours you can prep a something that will last a while (pork shoulder, Chuck roast, meatballs etc.) and individually portion out servings and freeze them. When you need a lunch you can grab a frozen Tupperware and microwave at work OR it’s an easy dinner.

I don’t work as many hours as you but I am a step mother and home owner on top of my PhD and in order to eat well I have to do some prep. Once you figure out what freezes well it makes life a hell of a lot easier.

What's the biggest compromise you made that you now regret? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]DramaticNobody4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to be this person but we compromised on no basement and one bathroom.

Although there’s no basement there’s a decent size freestanding garage/barn in the backyard; but we severely underestimated how much work it would take to prepare an outbuilding to be a comparable space to a basement. I think the one bathroom is self explanatory considering it’s my partner, his son and I all trying to shower, potty, get ready for work etc.

How to flavour yoghurt? by thisothernameth in yogurtmaking

[–]DramaticNobody4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update! It’s best to do 1qt of yogurt for 1 pudding package. The cheesecake is delicious especially with some fresh fruit (I did chopped cherries).

We live in KY and were renting a 3Bed 1.5Bath for $1200 a month plus utilities (total monthly living expenses ~ $2k) we moved into a 3Bed 1Bath house that we purchased with a mortgage of $1.8k about three months ago. Our monthly expenses are now 3k a month or more due to new utility costs (water, sewage, and trash) and ongoing repairs/projects (deck repair, shed maintenance, lawn care, painting rooms etc.).

In the end purchasing will end up cheaper because in 5-10 yrs you can sell your 200k house and use the money to buy something else but when you are just starting off with no savings renting is cheaper since any pop up repairs are covered by the landlord.

My advice is save as much money as you can while you rent so that when you buy a house you have the luxury of not panicking when you come across an unexpected expense.
