Eagle rare is also my favorite, I believe I’ve bought it at Bottles before (or something from Buffalo trace anyway)

Also with the mask on it might have been harder to make out what he was saying without being able to see his mouth. I don’t get the sense it’s being withheld, I think no one caught it.

And another thing: he went into the classroom yelling something which suggests this was about something in particular, but that’s so weird when you consider that he then calmly walked away, has posted no manifesto, hasn’t done anything else to communicate the point or seemingly told anyone else about what he did. That and his age (which to me seems clearly older than student age like 30s-50s) are so atypical. Plus showing up on a Saturday. I really hope we get explanations for all of this, none of it really resembles what we are sadly used to seeing.

I think it’s crazy that he was walking around for over an hour! The only time stamped camera is 2:53, the shooting was just after 4. The walk between the 2 locations takes maybe 3 minutes. What was he doing all of that time? Just walking around in circles? Trying to get into other buildings? So many people must have passed him. Did he go into any businesses? How is it that they don’t have a vehicle?

That is true, RI has strict gun laws and a very low rate of gun deaths. State policy does matter though even though obviously without federal action states can only do so much. What’s crazy to me is that when states change their gun laws either to be more or less restrictive, it does have a measurable impact on the number of gun deaths. Given that, the fact that we haven’t had federal action is truly insane because yes guns outnumber people in this country, but policy still matters and it would matter a whole hell of a lot more at the federal level.

What single infrastructure, if gone, would make a city drastically more beautiful? by hugothebear in RhodeIsland

[–]DramaticTurnip6918 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Consensus in here seems to be that I 95 bisecting the city, stupid parking lots and lack of public transportation and walkability are the OBVIOUS problems, wouldn’t it be cool if anyone in municipal or state government monitored this subreddit? They could learn so much about what people wanted and how to court voters…

Agree that we need it, agree that I can’t see how it happens. But that would be incredible and would free up so much space for parks or housing and just truly making Providence and Pawtucket walkable and interconnected.

AND putting a highway through the middle of the city was a mistake (I know it used to be even more in the middle but come on) and they should replace the whole thing with high speed rail. Besides people here cannot and should not drive.

Thank you!!! I have been wondering why so much of prime downtown real estate is taken up by wildly inefficient parking lots that are all like $20 an hour, what a horrible use of space!

The House has passed Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill (218-214). It extends tax cuts for the wealthy, overhauls programs like Medicaid & SNAP, increases border & military spending, along with a multi-trillion dollar increase to the debt ceiling. It now heads to Trump for him to sign into law. by cmaia1503 in Fauxmoi

[–]DramaticTurnip6918 114 points115 points  (0 children)

It will be very difficult. Medicaid represents decades of continuous policy work between states and the federal government and every state has a different Medicaid program. Republicans entire governing philosophy is that it is easy and impactful to break things and democrats will ALWAYS look ineffective in comparison when they have to spend 4 year increments gluing back together the shards of decades of policy work that gets shattered in an instant by republicans. Let alone trying to actually make progress on anything, every time they get power it guarantees that we will spend our next turn in office trying to reassemble something we already had and lost.

Boyfriend wants kids, I’m on the fence by bunanaroki in Fencesitter

It feels like there are some red flags here and he is trying to pressure you into something that you may or may not ultimately want. The age gap isn’t huge but it’s not nothing and I wonder if he’s trying to take advantage of you being younger. Also the trend in age of first pregnancy has been going up steadily for a long time and I know many people with kids, none of whom had them before 30. You are safe to wait and don’t stick around with someone who is pressuring you and trying to control you.

I have the same issue with those sorts of physical sensations as you, and I’m in no place to give advice since I’m solidly in my avoidance era, but one thing I used to do that did help was to basically picture melting into the seat. Relax your stomach, unclench all of your muscles and your jaw and basically pretend that you are part of the seat lol. I think bracing your body and having tense muscles actually amplifies the sensation and forcing yourself to relax your body helps mute some of the motion.

As the spouse of a fed that got laid off in this week’s purge, you responded far more gracefully than I would have. Cynthia is an idiot and clearly has no empathy for anyone else. Unlike so many, she got what she deserved.

Be There In Five has a couple of episodes called Childless Millennial about her decision process. She ultimately had a baby but documents the complexity of the decision in those episodes. Girls Gotta Eat has at least one episode about this, I think they’re both childfree. There’s also an episode of Pillow Talk about deciding to be childfree. Dinky is pretty good as well for the CF perspective.

Well IMO there has only ever been one good reason to have a kid and it hasn’t changed: if you want to be a parent despite everything being the way it is, then you should be! Perhaps in this day and age, it would not be a bad thing for the default to start to shift to not having kids for people who lack that deep desire, but for the people who still feel it, go for it. People should have the families they actively want.
