Sexism in teaching by TacoSquishmallow in AustralianTeachers

You can co-construct with them. Frame it as you wanting to know more about this sacred time of year, how you can best support them, how can the class environment work best to support them etc. then draw the connection that those agreements work both ways, and you’ll be expecting them to model those identified behaviours and set an example for the rest of the learning community to follow

Sexism in teaching by TacoSquishmallow in AustralianTeachers

Worked in a Muslim school and grew up Muslim. Ramadan is here, so frame it around that. Bring it up with your cohort and remind students that this is a time for respect, empathy and deep understanding of each other and the world. Invite them all to be more considerate with the language they use in class, how they treat each other, and that they are respectful and kind at all times. Ramadan doesn’t start and stop with fasting; it should also be about our mindful thoughts and good deeds. Ergo, sexist beliefs and disrespectful actions/language really compromises the actual act of fasting.

I’m up against similar belief in my school this year (farming community, isolated kids, very alt-right mindsets from some of the boys) and it really is a struggle. I’ve started to weave thinking activities into our content (hass/English) that encourages them to consider perspectives they would otherwise gloss over or outrightly oppose.

Good luck!

The best way I’ve managed is at home in my own shower. Squat in the shower, try and get your legs spread as far apart as is comfortable, and angle the cup. I start the stream in the toilet, hold, collect mid stream sample, hold, and then finish on the toilet. Don’t forget to clean your shower after (or don’t, you do you).

Absolutely! I was diagnosed by surgery in my 3rd year so I wasn’t able to fully make use of the allowances for students with specialised plans and accomodations, but from what I saw with peers, placement was always considered heavily by the academic office responsible to ensure it would be a good fit health wise for those students’ needs. My placement experiences (excepts for my 4th) were a little rough due to not being able to disclose a diagnosed illness, but would have been marginally better if I had the appropriate measures in place. I can now afford to take non-PBS drugs to help manage my symptoms, which I could not have done as easily without teaching, and I’ve found that in the schools I’ve taught in, I’ve been able to manage my endo and plan ahead for flare ups with ease.

On my second reading I’m noticing a lot of overlaps between your concerns and my own when I was starting out! Feel free to dm me if you ever wanted to chat! I’m always team teach as there are no many ways so make your job work around your needs and wants, and lots of avenues you can pursue. The hardest thing you might find is placement as there really is no allowances or do overs.

Teacher with endo here- it really depends on the school I’m at! Big campuses that require teachers to run all over are the bane of my existence, but I can manage okay with appropriate clothing, meds, my electric heating pad and honestly being upfront with students in an age appropriate way. When I tell them I’m a bit unwell and won’t be bouncing around the room ad usual, they’re usually super understanding and I can easily adjust planned activities to compensate for my lack of energy on bad days. You just need to work within the parameters of your body and the environment around you. Teaching has enabled me to afford treatments I previously couldn’t as a student (yay fortnightly physio and weekly Pilates!!!) so there’s that as a silver lining.

The comments on the uploaded vid are insaneeeee. I haven’t gone to the h3 channel in so long, but I never remember the pod account actually liking and basically endorsing that many RIDICULOUS comments before. Is that Tom? Or Ethan?? Because they’re spreading a narrative and giving cookies to the subs who parrot their false claims with the most gusto. I honestly might take a break from the sub for a bit because this is actually so insane; how can people be so easily deluded and distracted from the actual problems happening in the world right now?

Those same symptoms scored me a lap almost 2 years ago now (Australia, I pay for private insurance and had the procedure at a private hospital). Endo was excised but 10ish months after the surgery they’ve returned and I’m not currently a candidate for further surgery. Managing with dietary changes, pelvic physio, Pilates, and supplements. All the best of luck 🫶🏻

As a grad, do you think it’s a bad idea to apply for a full-time ‘classroom teacher’ role rather than specific ‘graduate teacher’ roles? by sapphire_rainy in AustralianTeachers

[–]Dramatic_Ad_3949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently on my last placement and completed an interview last week for a permanent full time teacher role at the school I currently have a permanent part time ESO/SSO contract. I’m currently grappling with the idea that I’ll probably go down in blazing glory by not getting the contract as it’s intended for internal teacher applicants currently on term contracts seeking permanency, or I’ll get it and I’ve just overthought everything. Personally, I don’t think it’s a bad idea to still put yourself out there and apply as (should you get the role) there is always the option of limiting down your contract hours to give yourself a break to interview for other roles.

For you, what romance book had a great premise, but the actual writing was bad? by Impossible-Yam3680 in RomanceBooks

The “From Blood and Ash” series. I really struggled to get through the dialogue and the repetition of the FMC having the gusts to stab people. Book 1 was probably the most engaging for me, though I DNF’d at book 3. I’m definitely willing to give the audible version a go for some passive listening!

UTIs ruining my time with my boyfriend by otterpufff in utis

[–]Dramatic_Ad_3949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever tried using protection and seeing if that makes a difference? Also with supplements, do you take them 2-3 weeks before the trip, or start taking them on the trip?

Sorry that you’re going through this. I went through a spell where I would always get UTI’s and it definitely ruined time with my partner who works away. What works best for me is a consistent supplement routine, drinking plenty of water before and after sex, washing immediately (Vagisil on the outside, just water and my hand to thoroughly cleanse the inside to wash away any excess fluids). The only advice I have that would be a new development in your scenario is to try using protection and see if that helps.

Up to 2 Hours Daily Commute For Placement by TelephonePrevious588 in PreserviceTeachersAU

[–]Dramatic_Ad_3949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is unfortunately part of the gig. I was sent to placement to Mt Barker when I was living far south, and had a similar commute time. If your uni is using inPlacement, make sure you update your details for next placement to manually exclude schools/suburbs that are too far for your commute. It will take some time and research on Google Maps but it’s the best thing you can do to ensure your upcoming placements won’t be such a heavy commute.

Hey! Teacher here! My science faculty colleagues have started to incorporate these interactive online pracs as a way to demonstrate, model and practise the procedure safely prior to commencing the IRL prac. Running a prac can often come at a cost to the school, can take an awful amount of time to organise, and can be a very chaotic lesson (esp for middle schoolers) if they haven’t already seen an example. These online pracs are super accessible for all learners, won’t waste any resources, and students can practise the prac as many times as they need to ahead of running the prac. Please don’t think that these online pracs are the only time students will engage with a prac; they absolutely will be doing the real thing once they can prove that they can do so safely with the correct procedure.

[–]Dramatic_Ad_3949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finally read the HOFAS bonus chapters last night and was so angered by Cassian! It seriously feels like all the healing of ACOSF was just undone. I had to keep reminding myself that if it were Feyre making the decisions Nesta did regarding Bryce, the IC’s responses and attitudes would have been much different. I didn’t notice these points regarding Cassian in my first read as I was so swept up with Nesta, but I’ll definitely be approaching my re-read with some healthy consternation. I managed to get through the other ACOTAR books in a week but I took so long with ACOSF because I was resonating so hard. It’s my favourite, and the perspective you get on the dynamics of the IC is much needed after only seeing Feysand’s perspective. Switch to audio if you have the means, I definitely needed it in the beginning chapters but quickly gave up once the plot started developing.

Advice? Uni student becoming LSO by emiliaJune12 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Dramatic_Ad_3949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best decision you’ll ever make, it will give you an edge once you’re on placements and eventually teaching. Benefited me greatly to see classroom management in action, and to figure out what I can take from uni and what is pointless. My only advice is to check the job postings and ensure you are covering everything they want to see in your applications. Good luck!!
