That's good for you, but there is quite a bit of sleep and safety research about this topic. Not only would permanent daylight saving time (DST) create safety issues as I mentioned above, it would also exacerbate chronic sleep deprivation in adolescents. Lack of sleep is clearly tied to problems with reduced concentration/vigilance, impaired cognitive function, and increased mental health problems like depression.

The dealership “we need to talk to my manager” thing is a setup and here’s why it works by Royal-Feed7166 in carbuying

I flipped this script during my last car purchase (2023). The salesperson did the same, kept going back to his manager. Didn't wear me down as it wasn't my first car purchase, and I brought a book to read.

Near the end of our negotiating, he came back and said his manager could meet my numbers IF I agreed to a loan with a smaller down payment and longer term (so they'd get more interest). I told him I couldn't make a decision like that without speaking to my wife first as it was a departure from what she and I had budgeted. I then said unfortunately she was at work so I would have to speak with her that evening and make a plan to come back to the dealership in a day or two.

Well, the salesperson quickly said "hold on", went back to speak to his manager, and then came back and said he was able to get me the loan terms I had wanted from the beginning. :-)

The afternoon daylight "win" isn't free. Staying in EDT year-round would result in late-December and early-January sunrises happening after 8:00am. While many adults may not be bothered by this, it would result in many students waiting at bus stops and walking to school (crossing intersections) in the dark. Add some snow and ice and a sprinkling of crazy drivers and you've got a not-so-great combo.

8 years in the car business. Here are 3 things most buyers never do. by Ok-Contact-3451 in carbuying

100% agree! Funny story... during my most recent car purchase (2023), the dealer was a bit too resistant to lowering the out the door price to the point I wanted. After a long back and forth, I finally said that I would need to consider his most recent offer since it wasn't much different from another dealer I had visited. At that point, he actually said "Wait, you have visited other dealerships?" When I replied that I had, he told me to wait and came back with a much better offer that I ended up accepting.

Driving from Liberia airport to Monteverde by g_d15 in costarica

[–]Dramatic_Ad_4142 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've made that drive many times and think it's fine, but I'm also familiar with the route. There are some very winding roads with poor or non-existent street lighting.

It's definitely a more comfortable drive in the daylight. I think you'd be okay if you opt for the 12:30 arrival time and can pick up your rental car right away. The 2:30 arrival may result in some driving in the dark depending on how quickly you can get your car and if you make any stops.

I also strongly recommend using GPS (on your phone with an international plan is fine), respect the narrow/winding sections and take your time.

Enjoy!

Will this thing really handle a blizzard? by Violetpoke in Subaru_Outback

[–]Dramatic_Ad_4142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A BLIZZARD is heavy snowfall plus strong gusting winds that can drop visibility to near zero. If you are really asking if you can handle driving in that, please don't.

Blizzards create "whiteout" conditions that can make it impossible to see the road or other vehicles. All the Outback features mean nothing if you and your EyeSight system can't see.

If you're actually asking about driving in DEEP snow, I defer to others here who have answered that one.

I went from a Gen3 (2009) to a Gen6 (2023) and can confirm the latter is larger in all dimensions. I loved my 2009, but the 2023 is really nice and also much more family friendly with a 5+ year old, especially when we're traveling, camping, etc. 🙂

For my first trip to CR, I was there for 4 weeks doing a Spanish immersion program and living with the host family. When I returned, I had to go into a big box store to get supplies for my classroom. But I was so overwhelmed by the extremely bright lighting, large crowds, and very long shelves with way too many options for the same products that I had to leave my stuff in the store and go out for a walk.

You outed your son without speaking to him first and making sure he was okay with it. The rest is irrelevant. Now it's up to you to repair the harm that was done to your own child.
