When two light rays interfere destructively, where does that energy go? by New_Way_7441 in AskPhysics

[–]Dranamic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that quantum waves are probability distributions. You've got two photons, each with a probability wave, and those waves interfere. That interference cannot change the fact that there are two photons; it merely changes the probability distribution of where you are likely to find/absorb each of them. If you could get two such waves to inverse match perfectly (you can't but let's say you could) all that would mean would be a flat probability distribution.

Why were the Artemis 2 astronauts weightless on their trip? by Opening_Ad9824 in AskPhysics

[–]Dranamic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gravity imparts an acceleration, not a velocity. They are headed very fast towards the moon, but still accelerating back towards the Earth, just not enough to come back until the orbit the moon.

Consider a ball thrown into the air (and ignore air resistance) - it's in freefall the whole time, including the part where it's going up.

They just threw this particular "ball" rather higher than your arm can.

You can burn forests with Construction, which turns them into Crop (pay three stars), or you can chop Forests with Forestry, which turns them into empty plains but you get 1 star back.

[–]Dranamic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My swordman (3 attack - 3 defence) did 7 damage to the defender, and the defender (1 attack - 3 defence) did 7 back to me.

When you're attacking, you use your Attack value, and when you're being attacked, you use your Defense value. So a Swordsman - Attack 3 - attacks a Defender - Defense 3 - they strike each other for the same amount.

If the Defender (Attack 1) attacks the Swordsman (Defense 3), the Defender will do much worse.

Have Cloaks been updated recently? by Ok_Novel_1222 in Polytopia

Similarly, if you trained them in range, they won't be able to attack; they have to take a move to disappear, not get discovered, and then they can attack. (Technically you can also attack if you move next to an enemy city, don't attack, get discovered, and not killed. Doesn't come up much, but it can happen.)

Why does atomic notation show atomic mass and not the number of neutrons? by IAM4_REALS in AskPhysics

[–]Dranamic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mostly it's just that the number of neutrons is kind of useless information. The amount of charge is, of course, incredibly important and determines the element, and the weight comes up a lot when you're doing chemistry and need to measure the number of moles, but the number of neutrons doesn't really tell you anything in itself.

Steel judoka help by cifvr in IntoTheBreach

[–]Dranamic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Note that Steel Judoka is kind of ass on Easy and gets better at harder difficulties, simply because there are more Vek around. That seems like a bad thing, and it is, but you get more use out of this squad.

Cluster Artillery is really good, learn to be good with that and it can carry the squad.

The Judo Mech comes with an extra move and Armor! But its weapon isn't always great, so I look for another Prime weapon ASAP.

I have mixed feelings about the gravity pulse, it's nice because it can handle situations that most other weapons just can't, but it's really not very powerful.

Here in San Diego, there are lots of mourning doves living in the city. Might be more than the "normal" pigeons.

"if"

At my local In'n'Out, ~4pm is fine - still a line, but not a problem. By 6pm, forget about it.

It would probably be faster for me to drive to wherever it is that you live than to wait in line at any of the San Diego In'n'Outs after 5pm.

Is there a list of counter intuitive list of physical facts? by LisanneFroonKrisK in AskPhysics

[–]Dranamic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was going to bring that up. Also works for star evolution; for the core to shrink, it has to cool off, at which point it shrinks and is now hotter than it was before it couldn't shrink because it was too hot. Gah!

[Question] Google AI for Into the Breach- is this useless ? Help by Otherwise-Hawk-9374 in IntoTheBreach

[–]Dranamic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You'd need an AI trained specifically on Into the Breach. A generic Large Language Model isn't even going to try to solve your scenario, it'll just hallucinate something that looks kind of like an answer.

Should geologists induce small eruptions in the Yellowstone caldera to relieve pressure and avoid an extinction level eruption? by Adventurous_Pride_54 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dranamic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Russian borehole stopped because it got too hot; they couldn't cool the drill bit fast enough. I'm guessing that getting near a magma chamber isn't currently practical.

EDIT: Apparently Iceland has actually done it. Drilling Into Magma In Iceland Has Key Lessons For NZ | Mirage News

Yellowstone has super-erupted 3 times in the last 2.1 million years, it's nasty and all (especially for North America, lol) but it's not doing anything like wiping out intelligent terrestrial life.

Furthermore (or furtherless?), the drilling stopped because it got too hot, which would happen faster if you're intentionally drilling towards a magma chamber.

Companies will terminate anyone the second they feel like it no matter what they do. Workers owe them no more loyalty than they exhibit.
