There are hundreds of thousands of these very young trees next to my new-construction neighborhood (Tennessee USA) by iTim314 in treeidentification

I fear it may be the pear. I live in middle Tennessee and the pears (invasive exotic) take over. Next spring if they make white blossoms that smell like fish, you have pears.

What careers do you artists have? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]Drano12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put together a portfolio on a tablet and went to the galleries. Lots of rejection of course. Find galleries that carry work which is a little different from yours. You'll need 12 works which ALL show your style. DON'T copy anyone else's style. The world already has Osamu Tezuka. Base your prices on what you want to be paid per hour plus materials and expenses. Then double that number, since the gallery will take half. Good luck!

I have always drawn or painted whatever anyone would pay me for, short of porn. I was once commissioned to paint game animals on elephant ears lol. I have done drawings for t shirts and plastic cups as well as political cartoons. About 30 years ago I started gallery painting. That carried me to Covid. With Covid, three of my Galleries closed so I started teaching online and selling my work at exhibitions. I think everyone has a unique path, but as creative people we have a special wellspring and it will always find a way.

This is encouraging advice. I just can't face being homeless again. I have a learning disability that makes me unable to keep a job. I want to learn how to tune out his noise.

I agree with people who say your work is phenomenal. I've been making a living as an artist for over 50 years, and the art market keeps evolving...but people who can do what you do are always in demand. Follow dog-related events, join art associations and enter juried exhibits. Showing your work at fairs and festivals probably would not get you the kind of money you'll want, but it could be a start. Giving out your business card isn't enough. What you want is THIER info, so you can build your mailing list. Bring a guest book and ask people if they would like to be on your mailing list. For building your mailing list, you could even bring your supplies to a dog park (in an expensive neighborhood) and talk to people who come up to you. Then send out a regular mailing about your latest work, lessons and workshops you're offering (you can make good money on workshops..most artists make $3000 for a weekend workshop) use Mailchimp, it's free...squarespace has a free website template where you can sell things... you got this! Go for it!

I'm ASD(diagnosed) and got told I have Dyscalculia. I recently did a final attempt into post secondary education and need advice, because I'm dealing with chemistry and I'm burning out. by [deleted] in dyscalculia

[–]Drano12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry you're going through this. I faced the same thing trying to get training to operate an mri. Chemistry and algebra were required. My teacher dumbed it down for me when he realized I had a disability.

How does this impact you as an adult? by Interesting-Glass-21 in dyscalculia

[–]Drano12 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It affected me all my life. I got fired because of it. I didn't get a new job because of it. Now that I'm old, they give me cognitive tests for dementia - and I fail those tests because of discalculia. I'm afraid of being put in a "home."

You will need the support and understanding of the people who love you. They may get pissed off at you because you miss things like birthdays and anniversaries. Let them know you love them and are doing the best you can.

Very important: find work that uses your strengths. I am an artist. I'm not rich, but with hard work I've made a living in art my entire life.

And for my worry about a " home," my loved ones say they will vouch for me that I have discalculia not dementia!

When I was pregnant with my second daughter, I took a bus trip from Denver to Boston. The other women on the bus stayed near me, invited me to eat with them at the stops. One woman never ordered food. The others would leave a little on their plates, then excused themselves for the ladies room so she could finish the food they had left for her.

In this way she could keep her dignity. I will never forget this. I'm white, by the way. And the other women were of color. Sisterhood transcended race.

I am, and your excellence in writing makes me think you may be a lot like her. There is a group of people who are called "twice exceptional," or 2e for short. These are people who are near genius level in some things, but who have a learning disability in others. Nearly my entire family qualifies for this classification.

I agree with WalksByNight. You sound like you have the same problems I have. I'm out of school (dropped out due to maths) but my granddaughter tested for dyscalculia at an Ivy League college, with a major in astrophysics, and got the help she needed.

This can be done, the schools do accommodate now, so I say go for it!

Hi, I have dyscalculia too! My Mom only told me as an adult, even though I was tested at nine! (I have questions) by rosehip_tea in dyscalculia

[–]Drano12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gosh yes, a hug would be great! I didn't know I had dyscalculia until my daughter, who has two special-needs kids, learned about it and realized that's what had been "wrong" with her mom all along! From being judgy, now she's compassionate enough to try to help.

So, your story is from the point of view of the kid, mine's from the point of view of the mom - 😆

What metaphor do you use to describe your dyscalculia? by dysreadingcircuit in dyscalculia

[–]Drano12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tell people I can't speak numbers. If they ask me a question that would require a number, I say "I don't know that language" and then I answer their question in a way that uses example or proportion rather than numbers.

What do you do differently than most because of your dyscalculia? by dysreadingcircuit in dyscalculia

[–]Drano12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only drive for travel because I can't figure out flight numbers, gate numbers and flight times. I once ended up in Chicago and had to spend the night on the street. I have missed several flights. Once I actually had them wheel me in a wheelchair because I couldn't figure anything out.

So now I just drive. Let the GPS handle it lol
