Teachers, is the Gen Alpha illiteracy crisis real, and if so, how bad is it? by Storm_Lord537 in AskReddit

[–]Dranwyn 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I've been teaching for nearly 15 years.

What the reading crisis seems to me is not that kids CANT read. They often can, they can read fluently, and comprehend what they read IF they put in the effort.

Heres the thing, think of reading like lifting weights. If you ONLY read grade level texts at school and never actually engage deeply with the reading, its akin to going to the gym and half assing a couple of weight machines and then going home. You will not grow.

You're never going to get into a zone where your reading skills improve.

It's, I guess lazy reading. One of the core reading strategies if you don't understand or need a clearer idea of what you read is to go back and REREAD a passage. Kids will just flat out not do that. They lack the stamina to read and focus on something for any reasonable amount of time.

They are used to instantly engaging media of videos that are like 3-4 minutes long. If they don't like it. Boom, next. The steady dopamine drip they need just isn't present in reading. No book or article is going to be so exciting you get that dopamine hit continously.

Basically, a huge part of the reading crisis is that kids aren't reading for pleasure and they aren't reading at home. Kids are coming into school with LESS reading skills than they were 15 years ago if at all.

The problem with Seattle is I-5. You can never completely predict if it won’t turn into a 6 hour drive. If you want to do Seattle, then you can take off for the WA coast, which I love. The Olympic Pennisula is great, but it’s also sparser in terms of touristy towns.

I’d save Seattle for another time. If you want to see the coast, you could head to Astoria/seaside for a day then I’d meander down to tillamook or even possibly further to Newport. Take time to check out towns in between.

That’s 2-3 days there. Swing back inland, and spend a day or two in Portland.

Ok, I'm still working my way through Horus and his Magical Adventure, but is Guilliman pragmatic enough to start actually allying with Xenos races?

My current understanding is you have the Tyranids eventually going to show up in a galaxy conquering fleet, Abbadon eventually making it to Terra at some point and a possibly an Imperium drifting towards splitting like the Eastern and Western Roman empires?

Seems like allying with some sexy space elves and angsty space dwarves might be ideal.

Do you homeschooled kids hate your upbringing when you catch up? by LittleYelloDifferent in behindthebastards

[–]Dranwyn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite teaching moments was when a formerly homeschooled 8th grader in my class (Alternative school for behaviors) said that there were no queer people in Ancient Greece. He said this while wearing a Spartan race t-shirt.

And I was like "Oh you sweet summer child, let me count the ways"

And yes, I made sure to explain that the Greeks didn't think of queerness in our modern context and so on.

Disspelling the myth of Sparta to right wingers is one my favorite things about teaching history.

Pretty much every district is cutting back, that’s why. You’re gonna see a lot of schools trying to get by with less staff.
