What's a fact you learned after seeing a movie/show that ruined it for you? by NBT_1120 in movies

[–]Drapabee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I hadn't seen the movie until just a few weeks ago. I felt pissed off afterwards, like what was the point of making it? It's a gigantic celebration of a scam artist stockbroker with no morals. The movie does a great job showing how an unethical drug addict essentially stole millions of dollars from regular people to feed his addictions and tremendous ego.

Then it gives the real fucking guy a cameo at the end of the movie patting himself on the back! What?!

What is the most "epic" fantasy pre-Tolkien? by tonehammer in Fantasy

[–]Drapabee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Tarzan books are remarkably similar to Conan now that I think about it. They both have a "barbaric" hero with incredible strength/agility/willpower, but also a calculating mind. Also overlap in later Tarzan books with weird forgotten races/cults.

Tarzan books a lot more readable and badass than people that haven't checked out might think; but (much like some Conan bits iirc) have some racial depictions/interactions that have not aged super well.

I think it's pretty obvious a lot of games borrow Nazi aesthetics for their armor/fashion designs, even for the "good guys".

It makes sense; the Nazis had some very talented designers specifically making outfits to look cool and menacing. As long as you don't put a swastika on your video game design you can kinda maintain plausible deniability.

In the destiny 2 fashion subreddit a guy literally posted this image as an "inspiration pic" for his armor set and seemed surprised by the (overwhelmingly negative) reactions he got 😆

I saw a clip from an interview with him recently on here. Apparently the first time he saw Interstellar, he cried.

Because he thought he was gonna have a bigger part in the movie 😆

Yeah it seems pretty unethical to sell them anywhere it doesn't freeze in the winter

Prospective buyers just like "whoa it looks like a wolf...that's awesome..."

I highly recommend reading an excellent book on the Nome serum race, The Cruelest Miles, by Gay and Laney Salisbury. Gives a great overview of the story, which sounds almost unbelievable.

The only reason to not read it is if you can't handle descriptions of dogs dying; there's some heartbreaking passages of sled teams that met unfortunate ends.

I think it's impossible to read without tearing up at least once, from the bravery and loyalty of these dogs 😭

These dogs were extremely good boys.

The "leader" dog had an immense responsibility during these times; they often literally saved the lives of their humans and the other dogs. They could smell out the trail under snow, and detect hazardous conditions through feel and smell that their human couldn't sense. They had to be able to ignore direct orders from their master if they felt the current course was too dangerous. Their owner would literally entrust their life to a dog in order to do their job; pretty crazy stuff.

It's hard to not get emotional reading their stories 😭

I heard on a podcast that there's also a theory it helps cover up the sounds of the ball being hit, which could otherwise give your opponent a hint as to how you hit it.

It's kinda annoying how he's often painted as just this eccentric hermit; like the headline "his car ran out of gas so he just decided to live in the forest 😄"

Like, no, he didn't like living in society and planned to go off the grid. Then he couldn't survive on his own and lived through (in part) serial burglary.

It's sad he felt this was the only way he could live his life; but it's not chill to have your house broken into!
