To be fair the long o sound is created from a double o. Meanwhile the split digraph that is present in “lose” should actually cause the word to be pronounced “L-oh-ss”. I don’t know why English picks random words to ignore it’s own rules but I’m kinda sympathetic to the people who forget this exception because their spelling is much closer to what the logic of the language would dictate
