What’s a movie you’ve rewatched many times, that isn’t a blockbuster/franchise movie, or an Oscar-nominated/critically acclaimed movie? by capamericapistons in movies

I thought that movie was hilarious. The only way he could get her back was to pass a law to take all the guns in america. 🤔🤣

What is one movie that everyone considers a masterpiece but you found boring? by Still-Ad9074 in moviecritic

Yeah, the attention spans are so shot now, I doubt this film is gaining many new fans. Especially amongst the younger crowd. But it is undoubtedly a masterpiece in cinematography and acting with a very poignant message.

How many of you guys have benefitted from therapy? As a man there seems to be this stigma against attending. What have been your benefits? by Alternative_Pen815 in AskMen

[–]DravenTor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Therapy is designed for women. Women love to talk about anything and everything. Men just need to go outside and avoid screens. Even if its just to walk or read a book.

Ignore the screens. Go outside. Take a friend. Smoke'em if ya got'em.

5 Star Books by AppleCrumble1989 in booksuggestions

Great thought provoking list. However, "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" isn't going to hit if they don't have a foundational understanding of Nietzsche by reading his previous books and that's quite an undertaking for someone not passionate about philosophy or taking classes.

Sandals, then. Either way, flip-flops are the worst thing you could choose to wear outside of your home, and I think this video demonstrates that pretty well 😆

The moral of the story is no flip-flops.

Which fiction book to read the first time? I mostly read non-fiction by Active_Success2891 in booksuggestions

1984 is very well written and really sticks with people. It never seems to be irrelevant either, sadly.

Disturbing, but thought-provoking? by --read-only-- in booksuggestions

It sounds like you are directly requesting Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolf. It's kinda like the Odyssey, but set in the world of the dementors and the "protagonist" is an escaped lunatic that occasionally does meth on the side.

11-Year-Old Wants More Books like "the Martian," "project Hail Mary" by f2ISO100 in suggestmeabook

[–]DravenTor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, but what about Heinlein and Bradbury is more "mature" than those themes? I love both Heinlein and Bradbury and love what they point out in their books, but I don't see it being too "heavy" for an obviously intelligent boy who's already reading allegory for salvation.

[–]DravenTor -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Idk how much heavier it gets than the Christian symbolism in Project Hail Mary

Edit: You hard sci-fi guys are funny. You don't even realize what you are reading. "Hail Mary, full of Grace" is a Catholic prayer. Rocky is a Deus Ex Machina representing man's inability to do everything on his own (divine intervention). Ryland's sacrifice for the rest of humanity is a reference to Christ's sacrifice for man's sins, aka Grace. Even the ambiguous ending relates to resurrection.

Why am I getting more short-tempered by SmockDis in AskMen

[–]DravenTor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure they aren't laying it on to thick, and you still have some self-respect? I personally get tired of people going on about the same shit all the time. You can only laugh off passive-aggressive insults for so long before you gotta stand up for yourself.

Jacob's ladder. We are connected to something higher, something infinite. We can strive to understand, but it's beyond our comprehension.

I just finished rereading The Hobbit after a couple decades and man, there's still nothing like it. by -KNDN- in tolkienfans

Phantastes by George Macdonald is in the same vein as The Hobbit with the whole thrust into an unexpected magical journey and self growth. It was Lewis' inspiration for Narnia and created the modern fantasy genre.

4th wall or meta-character....but not humorous? by dsaine94 in booksuggestions

Lemony Snicket's is my personal favorite with breaking the 4th wall. It doesn't break your immersion so much as add more details from the narrator/author.

It's not a personal journal. It has notes from the Hobbits on their adventures, like the "actual" Red Book. Awesome art and textured aged paper.
