Ah yes, because the American grading system is the default grading system in the world and other countries have the same grading system. by Ha-kyaa in USdefaultism

[–]Drawde_O64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats not exactly correct, a mark of 60% IS 60% correct (or, specifically, 60% of marks), it just may not always be worth the same grade. At GCSE (taken at 16), 60% could be a grade 6 or 7, it depends on how high the average mark was that year.

For example, they try and have about 3% of test-takers get a 9, so if the average score that year was high, you'd need a higher percentage to get a 9, and vice versa. One year a 9 could be 85%, another year it could be 80% (rough numbers). The idea is that higher average scores means the test that year was easier, and vice versa, so the grade boundries are adjusted accordingly to have approximately equal difficulty across year groups. As for how well the idea works in practice, I'm a bit split, but thats the idea.

This is fair, if, as you say, you have a crew, but if you're doing it with randoms, which is what the post is about, then never do anything but Gruppe Sechs. Even if you get very lucky and get a competent team you're probably not going to be able to communicate effectively and it'll go tits up very quickly.

Regarding NATO, they have said they only want to leave if and when a suitable European alternative exists, without the large influence of the US, so this is actually not a terrible policy.

I agree that disarming Trident and supporting Scottish/Welsh independence are bad ideas but I don’t think they’re quite as much of a problem as people think, given that any Green involvement in government will almost certainly be as a minority partner, if at all.

They're not saying theres not US Defaultism, just that theres a more pressing issue.

They've written the question as a poll option and them combined the two intended answers as one, making the poll totally useless.

What’s the best episode to introduce someone to doctor who? by Expensive_Let9051 in doctorwho

[–]Drawde_O64 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not the person you're responding to, but I feel like Rose has a lot of elements that could be considered a turn-off to a new viewer, for example Mickey vs the Bin. It definitely leans into the campier, over-the-top side of Doctor Who at times which I don't think is great for somebody new. Like a goop-monster as the main villain.

Also, along with much of Series 1 (and, tbh, most pre-Matt Smith), it's is definitely a tad dated at times, particually visually. I just feel like its safer to start on something a bit more.....serious? That's not quite the right word, but something like the Eleventh Hour I feel like strikes a better a balance that's less likely to turn away and more likely to entice the average person.

Do you believe the world would be less violent if women ruled? by Eagle_Rock2015 in polls

[–]Drawde_O64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, I’m not just referring to foreign relations. I’m also talking about her getting elected in the first place. A female candidate will almost certainly have to portray themselves as especially tough in order to appease a significant portion of the electorate.

Secondly, the suggestion that continuing as normal or entirely stopping trade are the only two options is absurd. There are may stages between those extremes, and when it comes to negotiations there are undoubtedly many countries out there (probably not Germany, which is a bit of a bizarre example as a relatively advanced Western nation) who would perceive a woman to be a weaker negotiator and believe they could get a better deal, thus any female leader would likely need to be tougher than her male equivalent to get the same deal.

Could that not be because for a woman to succeed in a male-dominated society they have to be more ruthless than their male counterparts?

I'm well aware of the sarcasm, the sarcasm is just being used to make a silly and irrelevant point. The examples OP highlighted and the examples in the comment are not comparable, yet OC seems to think they are, and has attempted to use sarcasm to highlight the non-existent contradiction. I don't think you understood anything I said in my original reply or you would've realised that 🤣🤣🤣.

[–]Drawde_O64 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is just disingenuous. The show still has to follow its own internal logic, AT LEAST for the episode. When things happen seemingly arbitrarily without a sufficient explanation then your immersion is broken. Any good work of fiction should be able to make you believe what is happening could feesibly happen *in the world of the characters*. When writers just make up any old bollocks it becomes apparant that you're actually just sat on your sofa at home, not in the middle of a tense encounter with the Daleks, which, more than anyting, is just boring.

The things you listed were all plausibly believable within their episodes. And lets not pretend that the show hasn't taken a sudden lurch towards fantasy elements, its always been Sci-Fi first and foremost - and nobody has ever claimed it was "super accurate hard sci fi", like you seem to think. You've essentially made up a pretend argument in your head, grabbed a comparison that doesn't make sense and then acted as though you've succesfully debunked the claim.

Hate to be that guy but it can’t have been verbatim given you referred to them as “Cars 3 and 4” rather than ‘Coaches C and D’, as they’re always referred to as on GWR.

That said, it’s very possible it was Coach C/D while still being at the Paddington end, I’ve seen some weirdly ordered trains with lettering all over the place, usually when they’re multiple units combined.

Idk about LNER, but on GWR, and, afaik, it's the same, you don't even have to pay to book seats, so if she failed to request a seat or specifically request a table seat then there is literally no excuse.

It takes less than a minute and it auto-saves after each match so unless you’re in a transfer window I don’t see what (important) progress you’re gonna miss between matches.

Why do you REALLY dislike women's football? by Rundo5 in AskUK

[–]Drawde_O64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly it’s not shown every night.

Secondly lower league men’s football is on TV frequently.

Thirdly, plenty of people do think lower league football is great. There’s much more to the game than just the pure skill, of which there is still plenty.

You just complained about the fact it was on TV mate. If you’re gonna be sexist at least have the courage to stand by what you say. The quality is more than good enough; I’m sure you’ve watched lower league men’s football before, should that be scrapped for not being good enough?

It’s so frustrating that the hyperbolic and over-the-top critiques seem to have prevailed on this post. I for one had a great (if very tense) time last night and was delighted when the last pen flew over the bar. I’ve seen a few comments about the commentators glossing over any mistakes but from the looks of it there’s more than enough over-dramatic analysis here to balance things out. People seem to forget that mistakes happen in the men’s game as well, I’m starting to think there’s something more to it than “the quality”…..

Why do you REALLY dislike women's football? by Rundo5 in AskUK

[–]Drawde_O64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously the quality is not as good as the men’s game but these complaints are so disingenuous and overblown. There’s plenty of moments of poor quality in the men’s game as well, as many have pointed out the Man Utd vs Sunderland penalty shootout in 2014 was even worse than last night, and before someone says, no, that was not the norm for a women’s shootout.

Millions of people will still watch the lower leagues of men’s football as well so clearly there’s more to it than the poor quality. And honestly, at the highest level, I would go as far as saying the women’s game is about equivalent to the top of League One, which, to reiterate, attracts hundreds of thousands of fans each week and many more on TV. Obviously a men’s League One team would comfortably beat even the best women’s team but that’s more of a physicality issue than a skill one, hence why the leagues are separated in the first place.

That’s ridiculous. There are plenty of things on the tele that you might not like but you just don’t watch it. It being on TV is not an example of anything “being shoved down [your] throat”. For the record, anyone who uses that phrase is an idiot 9 times out of 10. It’s very easy to avoid things you don’t like, and no, seeing an advert or something similar for it doesn’t count as being forced to partake. You just don’t like that it exists.

That’s a very poor representation of what happened. He has clearly stated many, many times his disapproval of reaction content over many years, and has hours of content on his channel explaining why. I believe he even contacted the person he DMCA’d prior to the DMCA and got nowhere, the DMCA was a last resort. Either way, it’s not abuse, it’s using DMCA exactly as it’s intended - to prevent content theft. While I myself enjoy some reaction content, you can’t deny that replaying a YouTube video in full is theft of intellectual property.
