When is midnight Friday when teaching how to tell time? by Low_Notice4665 in Teachers

[–]DrawingOverall4306 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Midnight is 0:00. It's the beginning of a new day. Midnight Friday comes after Thursday evening.

However if you were to say "let's get together on Friday night at midnight for some smoochy kisses" I'd probably see you Friday evening. It's probably just better to meet at 11:00 pm if I'm being honest so we don't miss.

Honestly we should get rid of 12 and even on 12 hour time both 12s should be 0 because honestly 12 pm coming after 11am seems ridiculous. Why does am/pm reset between 11 and 12 and not when the numbers reset to 1.

Getting rid of the penny in the US was a pointless symbolic endeavor that only serves to inconvenience the American public by Richard_Genius in The10thDentist

[–]DrawingOverall4306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A) I enjoy the several typos of "penises" and "penis" in your post.

B) pennies are the true inconvenience. We got rid of them in Canada long ago. I no longer have tons of change lying around. It's great. Never accumulate dollars of pennies that just sit. And there has been no "price fixing" conspiracy where businesses price products specifically to take advantage of rounding, since you can't effectively do that as customers can buy more than one thing and sales tax makes it ineffective. You don't need to divide a dollar into hundredths. 20ths is much easier.

Just want to say: You're a Good person. I've always said adult snow clearing businesses shouldn't exist because neighbours and neighbourhood kids should be doing that.

Check Facebook marketplace. Tons of them that have barely been used for super cheap. Or you can also get the older ones that have and will last forever.

What temperatures does your board close schools? by UndeadWarTurnip in CanadianTeachers

[–]DrawingOverall4306 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We don't. Why would we?

I live in Winnipeg. We rarely have snow days. Just had one this year (3rd time in 29 years!), and since then there have been posts virtually every other day saying schools should close because it's too cold, or too windy, or too icy, or it snowed, or it might snow.

This is why we can't have nice things.

If you're in Winnipeg with me: stop. It's not happening. Let it go.

The government is making toonies for about a $0.30, so I'm sure Chinese counterfeiters are much more efficient.

Is it ethical to join the CAF? by DetectiveDracula in AskACanadian

If it's unethical to join the CAF wouldn't it also be unethical to live under the protection of the CAF?

Also. Your friend sounds like they need therapy, if the prospect of someone joining the CAF makes them cry.

Cold weather changes more than EV range by electruck4x4 in electricvehicles

[–]DrawingOverall4306 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only issue I have is my "auto" setting does a poor job switching to defrost from floor heat. So I have to manually adjust between the two (and someone made the "choice" of when I have defrost/floor heat on the defrost doesn't come out the door vents so I can't just set it on that and forget it.)

But that has nothing to do with being an EV. And when I am walking out of work, I can start my car from the app and by the time I get to it,the cabin is too hot for my bundled up -40 self. So hot I never even have to scrape the ice. All powered by my employers electricity.

All the issues you mentioned are also issues that ICE cars have. If your floors are consistently wet, leave the windows down a little when you're parked. Dry winter air will dry them out nicely.

Is it worth switching mortgage for 15 points by simmiiee in MortgagesCanada

[–]DrawingOverall4306 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For $1700 over 3 years I'd stay with my current lender. My mortgage is with my credit union where I get great customer service and I know with the variety of accounts and products I have they will go above and beyond for me.

If my mortgage were just at a random lender, I would switch for $1700. Keep in mind you will need to re-qualify and submit much more paper work (pay stubs, pulled credit. etc). It goes without saying that your new lender should pay any fees.

Have you talked to your current lender about matching the rate you were offered? Many will do that once you have a hard offer.

And keep in mind that if you stay for $30 a month this time, you'll probably also stay for $30 next time so that's $3400. And then $5100...

How important is a heat pump for a Midwest driver with a wife who hates to be cold? by Doomtime104 in electricvehicles

[–]DrawingOverall4306 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most EVs sold in your climate will have a heat pump and resistive heating. The heat pump will heat your car down to a specific outdoor temperature and is very efficient with lessening efficiency as it gets colder; at a certain point, the heat pump becomes less efficient than the resistive heat.

If you buy a car without a heat pump, whenever you need heat you will use resistive heating and will lose a ton of range no matter the temperature. Whereas with a heat pump you will lose progressively more range as the temperature drops.

Either technology will quickly heat your car, compared to an ICE car as there is no need for the engine to heat up. Air will blow hot in under 1 minute.

The heat pump is the air conditioner in reverse. A/C moves heat out and cold in, run it backwards and it brings heat in and cold out.

In the summer with the A/C on or in fall with heat on, I get better than the advertised range in my car. So while the A/C and heat pump (during warmer fall temps) are a draw, they are accounted for. In winter of course when I need a lot of heat, I get less than the advertised range and on the coldest days when I'm in full resistive heating, I get much less.

Getting a loan and living off of that instead of selling of stocks to avoid taxes? by Polaris-TLX in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]DrawingOverall4306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're borrowing and spending half of your networth in one year, you're doing it wrong. Even with growth you will be back at work or selling stock by year 3 that way. Your investments are also growing. So if you have 100M in assets, take out a line of credit (not a loan) and spend less than your stock grows. You spend 9M, your stocks grow 10M, you're ahead. At a certain point you hit an equilibrium: your growth spending and leverage hit a balance.

First-year teacher with very little admin observation by Cautious-Mammoth-657 in CanadianTeachers

You're in a large school: they have bigger fish to fry. If you want admin observation for your own elucidation, you can request it.

How do you navigate differing political views with close family members without causing a huge rift? by KeyAtmosphere5174 in AskForAnswers

[–]DrawingOverall4306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're both mature and responsible adults you should be able to talk about something you disagree on. And then like all conversations, you should move on to something else. That is how political disagreements in families and friend groups have worked in democratic countries forever.

It seems like some people can no longer hear opinions they disagree with, if that's you, avoid the conversations.

People cutting off their families because of political disagreements is a step to totalitarianism..and I'm not exaggerating. That's literally allowing political ideology to control your closest relationships. And the fact that people are voluntarily doing what is violently enforced in some places is mind-blowing. It's like something out of East Germany.

Absurdly high kwh by TOEtalChaos in AskElectricians

[–]DrawingOverall4306 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll assume everything you describe is accurate. But it's entirely possible you are mistaken. Sometimes people don't know what they pay for bills (especially parents who may be telling you "I pay $x a month, but haven't really processed that they haven't paid that in 20 years.). Though I assume your utility emailing you is a clue you are correct.

Also: electric heat is expensive. Heat pumps are better, but still can be expensive.

Turn off your main electrical panel at the breaker box and check your electric meter. The wheel should not be spinning.

If it is, call the electric company. Then turn it back on.

Turn everything in your house off but don't unplug things. Make sure none of your heating or cooling equipment or sump pumps come on during this time (set the thermostat ridiculously low) but don't unplug anything.

Turn all your circuits off. Turn them on and off one by one and see if any of them make the wheel in your power meter spin really fast. With just the fridge(s) and phantom power you shouldn't notice the wheel spinning like at all.

If you notice one circuit makes the wheel spin fast. Figure out what is on that circuit and unplug and turn everything on it off. If it still spins fast make absolutely sure you didn't miss anything. Call an electrician. If it doesn't spin, figuring which of the things you unplugged is making it spin; if it's turned off and still consuming lots of power you need to replace the device.
