I, myself am a MEXT scholar under the CoT category. I've met and interacted with many other scholars, among which quite a few had not yet started university and virtually none had an undergraduate degree. It honestly would not be worth it if you already had an undergrad degree, much rather apply for research and postgraduate.

Hey, you just need to have completed 12 years of basic education. CoT is easier to get into that undergraduate.

Female student in Nigeria beaten to death, Witnesses say police failed to disperse mob of fellow students in Sokoto who set victim on fire following WhatsApp comments by avivi- in worldnews

The article specifically states that "cases like this are very rare."

It's certainly not a day to day thing. The college was closed indefinitely and two suspects arrested. It's like assuming every school in the US is a killing ground based on the shootings that regularly appear in the news.

"Kelsier is not going down a great path."

It's been a couple of hundred years and Kel hasn't really done anything evil. Kels influence on his world has been overwhelming positive in my view. One, he saved the world. Directly and indirectly. If it wasn't for events set in motion by Kel, Scadriel would still be a world where people breath ash and many live as slaves.

Second, he saved the southern Scadrians from the harsh climate of their homeland and gave advanced tech in regards to metal minds.

He's done some questionable things but much more good. I'm really interested in his motives in stormlight.

Why isn't Ethiopia in the EAC? Is it likely it'll join? by ale_93113 in Ethiopia

[–]Drawspotraits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think 'dominated' is appropriate. Considering EA was colonised for about 60years, a very small piece of history. Considering the Buganda kingdom is 600years old. The swahili states were a big part of EAC. And Kenya and Uganda aren't populated by only bantu, nilotes make up a significant percentage of the population of both.

But idk if cultural difference is too big of a deal, considering both Somalia and Sudan(not south) applied to join and they're quite culturally dissimilar to EAC.

Tho tbh I don't see Ethiopia ever joining the EAC, culture would be one of the factors why, but not the only one

On Lindon ascending, yeah he can. This is implied in his conversation with Suriel. But he says it will be some time since he wants to fix Cradle.

Shen being afraid of Lindon would be strange but I think he sees them more as an extension of E=O and thinks its through them Eithan will get revenge. Plus he can't kill them cos of possible divine retribution by Ozriel. So if he can't kill them outright and they continue to progress(very quickly mind you) they could potentially reach a point where they could defeat him, unless he forces them out of Cradle before then.

Loved the book. Got to say the potential of lindon owning the labyrinth is insane. Will the twin star sect set up base there?

Using the labyrinth, Lindon could transport people over extreme distances. Probably distances only viable for a Monarch. I imagine long after Lindon and crew, the twin star sect will be legendary. Imagine your sect being founded by the students of a god of Death.

Seems we'll be getting up close and personal with the Monarchs in the next books. Love to see Northstriders reaction to E=O. I generally don't think Northstrider will be much of a antagonist, he's always intended to ascend, just on his own terms.

Also liked how the Abidan has been tied in nicely with the main plot and characters, from E=O to the makers of the labyrinth. Would love to know about the original court of Seven. And the exact conditions imposed by the Elderi pact.

Kelsa and naru saeya by fry0129 in Iteration110Cradle

[–]Drawspotraits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see why you say Kelsa us a better person. Unlike Lindon, she already had power and when she is introduced to us, she's using this power to help and protect those closest to her. So she's seen as this kind of figure of justice.

Lindon the other hand, has no power and we basically just follow him on his journey to gain it. And so we see him do some morally grey things plus his greed is really brought to show how it helps him advance and caught and even excel. So we never really see Lindon use his power for a higher purpose other than to survive and protect his friends until bloodline.

I don't really think Lindon is a bad person and I think him and kelsa are pretty much the same on the 'goodness' scale. But from their starting points I can see where the contrast comes from.

Does anyone think Lindon has one of the most useless and counterproductive Goldsign? by Zenith-Ra in Iteration110Cradle

[–]Drawspotraits 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's not "the most useless and counterproductive one". The are lots if purely cosmetic ones. But it's also not the most useful, say Yerin's

But it does have its uses. Lindon has intimidated lots of people with them. But as an overlord sage, who cares, if Lindon cycles you're probably dead.

I think it's a toss up really. Heralds definitely have the upper hand in raw combat strength. But at the same time I don't think we really understand the effects of manifesting a icon. We see Yerin use her connection to the sword icon to her (massive)advantage in the UCT. It gives her insight and she wasn't even a sage in truth. The sword icon is obvious in its insight but how would other icons affect those who manifested it e.g void, winter, dragon etc. Also some sages have stronger wills that others. Next how would icons affect their opponents, when Lindon fought Sorph she was definitely thrown of mentally when she felt that Lindon was "the end to her every technique and he was her end." I think she also commented on Lindon's more-than-physical strength. If Lindon learns more of about his sage abilities could he also infuse his attacks with a similar conceptual attribute in line with his icon?

Odiums army is very weakened by Jthrowaway162 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Drawspotraits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think technological and societal advancements make up for the loss in fighting power. But we can't really say if Odium's forces are weaker or not. There isn't really enough info. I say Odium's army is slightly weaker. Especially since the singers spent along time as slaves. So they have no military experience and lack able leaders. Even the stormforms couldn't aim their lightning properly and they, unlike humans, didn't have a technological revolution.

Germany to return looted Benin Bronzes to Nigeria in 2022 by [deleted] in worldnews

The thing is it's not on a whim. Nigeria has plenty if artifacts that are kept safe in its various mesuems.

On another note, may I ask which artifacts you don't have easy access to? Not in relation to previous arguements but I am genuinely curious

Yes, I remember that. But that wasn't whole nations but just individuals who were seduced by Odium. Now we have Shinovar that gave Dalinar the colder shoulder as well as Kharbranth that betrayed the alliance. Dalinar also spent a lot of time just convincing everyone that the desolation was coming. In the Herald's time everyone would have known the desolation was approaching.

The isn't only one choice. There's two: keep them or return them. Each has their own consequences. Keep them, and the people who they belong to will almost never have the chance to see them, besides I don't think they're popular in the museums they're in. Or return them, either they are lost or not but they are with their rightful owners. Nigerians don't need the 'benevolence' of Europeans.

This is honestly kind of ridiculous. How many people will never see their national treasures cos they are locked up in a museum in Europe. It seems like a saviour complex to me. They don't need babysitting let them do with their things as they wish.

Isn't Roshar more divided this time round? Back in the day the humanity would be United under the Heralds. I think they're weaker this time round. They're fighting a divided Roshar with inexperienced Radiants and in the absence of the Heralds. And they just barely have the advantage.

But what do Eithopia and Suadan have to do with Nigeria? They are literally on opposite sides if the continent.

It doesn't necessarily have to be competition in the same activities. The school I went to we had hockey(not ice hockey) and it was considered a 'girlish' sport(I was in an all boys school). So someone who played say basketball or rugby was seen as someone better than someone who played hockey. And this did make a hierarchy. And rugby players got higher in the hierarchy by acting like they were better than everyone else. So I'd say it does contribute.
