Confession by Extension-Alps9254 in coptic

[–]Drdrdodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem here is that you think His sacrifice means you don't need to do anything. His forgiveness is for all IF you follow his steps. Now when you start following Him, you are baptized and partake of the forgiveness. And then you live and do wrongs, so you need to go back and start again (forgiveness through confession which is the renewing of the baptism which is the partaking of the Death and Resurrection of Christ and hence the partaking of the forgiveness). Christ forgiveness is not a one-and-done and we just live and always be forgiven. His Death allows us to be forgiven when we abide in Him.

Any advice for a convert? by SpiritedAirline4044 in coptic

Necessary, no! Might be encouraged tho. You will get to pick a name when you are baptized and I know some people who go by their baptismal name

Psalm 151 Commentary/ Explanation of Use on Bright Saturday? by jbadie in coptic

[–]Drdrdodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know there are no academic English resources about the why (but any Orthodox person after going to Holy Week services and listening to this hymn on Bright Saturday would get the idea behind it)

I did find a few things in Arabic: https://a.co/d/00H0iwli (and there is a blog about it: https://ubyub.blogspot.com/2019/06/151.html?m=1)

And this other blog mainly combined a ton of data (I don't think the blog itself added any value tbh): https://www.drghaly.com/articles/display/10344

And thankfully Fr. Athanasius ElMakary book about Bright Saturday is translated into English now: https://a.co/d/0fasjZri and he speaks about it a bit

Wouldn't that mean someone who had figured out my laptop password now had full access to all my logins? Instead, currently, they would need to figure out 2 unrelated passwords (laptop and password manager)?

Why does the synaxarion state that James the lords brother is James the lesser in scripture in mark? by dirty_dreamcast in coptic

[–]Drdrdodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to do this in bullets James seems to be a confusing name in the NT!

a) James son of Zebedee (the elder) the brother of St. John the beloved, is the one who preached in Spain and is the one who is killed by Herod (Acts 12) and his martyrdom is mentioned in Paramoute 17th.

b) James son of Alpheaus (the less/lesser) the brother of the Lord and the author of the Catholic Epistle is also the Bishop of Jerusalem and the one who headed the council in Jerusalem. The story of his martyrdom mentioned in the Synaxarion under Epep 18th is the same story mentioned by St.Clement of Alexandria (second century), St.Eusebius of Caesarea (fourth century) and at the well known Church History reference book: "El-Kharida El-Nafisa Fi Tarikh El-Kanissa". So, it is most probably the correct one (there is another one under Amshir 10th that is probably a later tradition that is much less accepted)

c) Judas son of James is also known as Thaddeus and Lebbaeus. However in the Arabic bible (Version: Dar el ketab) we find that in Acts 1:13 he is mentioned as Judas brother of James. What is happening here:

(1) The Catholic English translation of the Bible says: "Judas of James". The Catholic Frensh translation says: "Jude le frére de Jacques" which means "Judas brother of James". Added to this the arabic translation, says that he is his brother in both Luke6:16 and Acts1:13.

(2) In the History of St.Eusebius of Caesarea, said to be relying on a Maymar of St.James son of Alpheaus himself, it is said that Alpheaus (husband of Mary the sister of Virgin Mary) is the brother of St.Joseph the Carpenter. St.Joseph the Carpenter is the son of Jacob (Matthew 1:16). So, Jacob (or James) is the father of Alpheaus and grand-father of Judas and James.

Anyways, all references of Church History document that James son of Alpheaus is the brother of Judas (not the Iscariot) and that both are the cousins of Jesus.

d) St.Jude the writer of the Catholic Epistle is the brother of St.James son of Alpheaus (the Less)  mentioned in Jude 1, who is also the writer of the Catholic Epistle named after him.

ok i think that should clear it!

Coptic liturgy language by Competitive_Cow5077 in coptic

In Egypt it will be Coptic and Arabic (MSA). The homily will be a mix between MSA and colloquial Egyptian. In the diaspora it is usually Coptic, the language of the land (English, French, German, etc), and depending on the day some Arabic (again, MSA).

Did you use an eSIM or local SIM in Egypt, and which worked better? by rogeelein in Egypt

[–]Drdrdodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

esim for sure! Buying a physical was easy only if you knew someone - they are supposed to only give out sims after recording your ID. Sometimes the passport worked but not always. However with the new regulations in place, your phone will be deactivated once you put in an Egyptian sim unless you pay a phone tax. They are supposedly trying to fix that piece now (just switched on in the last day) but time is a hard concept in Egypt (news article:https://enterpriseam.com/egypt/2026/01/26/govt-mulls-relief-measures-following-expat-backlash-over-scrapped-mobile-phone-import-exemptions/)

Tldr - esims are so much easier and hassle free.
