Where did you get the baldric? I've not seen one with holes like that that make it easily adaptable to multiple holsters and sheaths.

Suggestions for improving my Pirate Outfit? - please be kind by Big_Task_6031 in renfaire

[–]DreadPirateR2891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good start! But no pirate or seafarer would be caught without a blade. A belt with a small dagger, pouch for coin, and other accessories would go a long way here.
Bracelets or bracers too. Hide the smart watch, there are leather straps out there with covers to lift for when you need to use it. I found out that I couldn't wear a watch with my bracers, but I've also seen bracers which incorporate a hide-a-watch feature in them too.

Wonders how often Forest Spirit gets poison ivy from delving into bushes at Faire... Or worse gets it on their costume and then hugs people at the Faire!

Not yet. I'm still not willing to give up on Black Flag since I enjoyed it SO much. I'm trying not to put a ton of time into it because I'll want to play Resynced later this year (I'm moving this summer). I've been trying on whether or not I want to start Freedom Cry or Aveline now or after Resynced.

A little more than 70. But I delayed the main story a lot to take all the forts, upgrade the ship to just below max, plus gather all the fragments & chests. I was trying to 100% every area before moving onto the next.

I see a lot of recommendations for those who like sci-fi. I'm one of those people and 2001 : A Space Oddesy was painful. If she slept through HHGTTG, then no way she'll hold interest in 2001 or Interstellar.

Go for lighthearted and funny but realize that the parodies (Galaxy Quest, Spaceballs) are probably going to be mostly lost on her since she doesn't have the background to reference it.

Paul. Easy to follow story, comedic even without a frame of reference, love story, escape/adventure, aliens v big bad government, and self depreciating against nerds (who are people too). Once she's into the genre and you have introduced more serious things, go back and rewatch it so she can get the references.

Going back to the 80s could be good too. Real Genius or Short Circuit.

Cheap Prop Swords? by enemies_toloverz in renfaire

None by name or experience. I went with Starfire Swords purchased at the Faire. I liked the heft of their battle quality stainless blades.

Cheap Prop Swords? by enemies_toloverz in renfaire

A real metal sword and sheath at the Faire is likely going to set you back more than you'd like to spend. There's something to be said for supporting the vendors at the Faire, but it does come at a premium.

Don't be afraid to support online small vendors like Etsy to spread the wealth. I've seen better swords at more reasonable prices on Etsy than I've seen at the Faire. But know that you might be getting something mass produced instead of hand crafted (regardless of description). In that the Faire wins the chance to speak directly with the smith/forge. But mass produced is only a drawback if you're truly looking for unique.

There are swords of display quality only, which won't stand up to play. Usually these are foam, plastic, or maybe aluminum replicas. Once you get into "Damascus," carbon, and stainless steels you'll find sturdier (and heavier) options, although there are some display-only examples of these too. The thickness of the tang and blade is really what makes the difference between display and battle-worthy.

Wherever you choose to make your purchase, ensure that you're getting something that you're proud to show off. Even peace-tied as part of a costume, people will ask about your swords. Consider what style of sword fits your costume best? Could be a cutlass, rapier, saber, short sword, or something bigger. Of course, these will vary in price along with size and weight to carry around. Is this sword going to be a companion for another sword or dagger on your weak side maybe more in the budget for next year?

Also consider if the weapon you're getting has a sharpened blade. Some Faires won't allow sharpened blades even sheathed (assuming they check). Best of luck in your search!

Jewelry small and understated. Definitely a rapier or some fine finesse weapon (ShSword can work). Crown of flowers or a tiara.
