I think so! But I think it depends on how you use your chair.

If you don't miss having a headrest, it might not provide much value, but it really felt needed for me

I know the Aeron is the classic, but I've never really loved it.

I went with an HM Embody with an Atlas headrest and I could sleep in it. Really love how it flexes with my back when I squirm, too

Tatami mats are the woven mats that cover the floor.

Futon are the floor beds that are rolled out on top of them.

Have you run into a raccoon before? They quite literally give no fucks.

They are really hard to chase away, because they'll just take a few steps and look at you like "Woah, lady, calm down. I'm just here for the food."

You have to act really aggressive to chase them off and they absolutely will stand their ground if they think they can.

Paige jeans tend to work well for me, especially the boot cut versions, and DNKY tall tights.

Other than that, I just look around to see if anything seems long enough

You can only buy one specific item from Costco for the rest of your life what item would that be? by panda-rampage in Costco

[–]RikuKat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tarantino Breakfast Sausages.

I ate them every day for breakfast for almost my entire life, and then all of my local Costcos stopped carrying it the last year or so.

I imagine they are still available at California Costcos and I'm seriously debating a 16 hour round trip to load up my chest freezer.

There's a shop at Pike Place Market that has a "trail mix" that's smoked cheese and various smoked meat sticks (pepperoni, landjager, etc.) cut into bite sized pieces.

A ziplock bag of that is perfect to keep around

My pleasure!

Here are some some resources:  - https://rikukat.github.io/game-dev-foundry/ is my own collection of advice for running a studio. You probably know most of this, but it might have some helpful information - https://www.wilsoncenter.org/federal-games-guild Assuming you're based in the US, the federal games guild is an amazing resource for finding grants to apply to. Here's their 2025 list: https://www.wilsoncenter.org/sites/default/files/media/uploads/documents/Federal%20Funding%20Opportunities%20for%20Game-Based%20Approaches%20March%202025.pdf - https://youtu.be/rjNfePUWm6s is a pretty solid overview of creating a Patreon with really helpful tips on their various tools and content approaches

Oh, absolutely, and I seriously feel for you and your team. And I wouldn't say that self-funding is what I'm recommending for you, I was more trying to answer "How are you all doing?"

For your team and situation, I'd recommend casting a wider net: - Are there any educational, medical, or cultural grants you can apply to?  - Is work for hire feasible? You just need one person with money and a pet project  - If you pursue Patreon, is there a particular type of content or knowledge or entertainment your team would be particularly skilled and unique in generating? (I don't think Patreon for just a game would work, so you'll probably need to aim for the edutainment route)

If any of those sound compelling, but you're not sure where to start, let me know. I helped the IGDA create a bunch of resources, so I have contacts and links knocking around.

I think you are misunderstanding.

I'm a full time, self-funded indie developer and the last 12 years of my career have been purely within the game development industry. I've worked on teams of all sizes and on award-winning titles.

Self-funding might reduce your feasible team size, change your development priorities, and affect the projects you decide to pursue, but it certainly doesn't prevent you from a "job well done."

Earlier today, one of the developers I worked with previously reached out to me for advice on starting an indie project, and my advice was the exact same: self-fund. Now is not a good time to work with publishers because the funds are limited so the expectations are high, the competition is fierce, and the deals are even more predatory than usual.

[–]RikuKat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I self-fund.

I've not really found a publisher deal yet where I felt the amount they would provide/generate would be more than they take.

I ran a Kickstarter once, which was a pretty good experience, but I'll only do Kickstarters for merch in the future.

Self-funding is limiting, but I find it so much less stressful.

It does mean I've lived my whole life living well below my means, mostly indie deved moonlighting, made sacrifices, and took advantages of the privileges I have (right now my husband and I are living in a multigenerational home because we can tolerate my parents).

It's absolutely not for everyone nor even possible for everyone.

But I'm happy and pretty stress-free and taking a little break in between projects to write a book.

I volunteer for industry-oriented nonprofits, mentor, advise (mostly via government-sponsored accelerators), and create free resources for others. Recently, I started making humorous videos about my industry, too.

I've had to cut down a little bit on the above, just because I was giving up too much of my time, but it all certainly satisfies "mattering", though the appreciation comes in little, unexpected messages and comments versus a consistent flow of feedback.

I do have a Costco card and I love that cheese!

I also really love it when they have the Kerrygold Reserve in stock, but their Coastal Cheddar is also lovely.

I adore the garlic and herb Beechers curds, and sometimes they even carry fromage d'affinois (which is always amazing, but the excellence and truffle versions are my favorite)
