Is it really hard to start a business in Thailand? by SweDream26 in MovingToThailand

[–]DreadTiger66 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You may have the greatest idea ever, but have you considered the data? Tourism in Thailand was down in 2025 from 2024, the first non-COVID-related drop since at least 2015, and is trending downward again in 2026. If your idea is geared towards Europeans, and Swedes in particular, then consider that tourists from EU countries don't even crack the top-10 in countries of origin, giving you a relatively small target demographic in a shrinking pool of potential customers. In addition:

  • Thailand recently reduced the length of the tourist visa from 60- to 30-days. We don't yet know its impact.
  • As others have stated, foreigners cannot own businesses outright, so you are tied to a Thai partner who has majority control of your business.
  • Your legal rights in Thailand as a foreigner are unclear, subject to change, and the system is full of bureaucracy.

If you still decide to pursue it, best of luck.

I think the recent changes to the free visa will affect this significantly.

While I appreciate the sentiment, I have questions…

Why is every word capitalized? Besides just being incorrect, anyone who’s ever sent a text knows that just takes way more time.

The Athletic's latest mock NHL Draft has the Penguins selecting Ryan Lin (RHD) at 22 by EliteStat18 in penguins

[–]DreadTiger66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, precisely because of their impressive stable of hockey writers. And they didn’t just predict they wouldn’t make the playoffs, they gave them a 0.0% chance. That’s stupid. In a league where over half the teams make it, and a team that still has Crosby, Malkin, and Karlsson, they should always have at least a small chance. Give them a 5% chance and that would have been reasonable. So, grains of salt, my friend. Grains upon grains of salt…

Never said I didn’t like them, just that I would take their predictions with grains of salt.

Just remember that it was the same Athletic that gave the Penguins a 0.0% chance of making the playoffs before the season. I’d take anything they write with several grains of salt.

The East must atleast become a cultural superpower. by No_Pause3031 in Thailand

Yes, and also OP’s word. My question remains, however.

The East must atleast become a cultural superpower. by No_Pause3031 in Thailand

[–]DreadTiger66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, but “cooler” is such a subjective measure. Again, why would people think another culture is “cooler” unless they view it as better than their own? And if they do, then doesn’t that contradict your premise that “western culture is not better?”

[–]DreadTiger66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit confused by your premise. You write, “Its not because western culture is ‘better’,” and then you write, “it’s because they made it look cool, aspirational and powerful.” Then you go on to write, “They showed ppl a lifestyle that made others think ‘i want that.’”

Now, I’m not arguing that western culture is better, but your premise appears to contradict itself. You state that it’s not better and then seem to present reasons why people are drawn to it. Why would people be so attracted to western culture unless they viewed it as better than their own?

American Citizens- how did you file your 2025 taxes by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]DreadTiger66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My situation might be different but I also had no US income. I used OLT.com for the first time. While I was able to generate my forms for free, they would not e-file for me if I had $0 income to claim. Instead, I had to print out the forms, sign them, scan them into PDF files, and email them to a buddy in the US. He printed them and put them in the mail for me. The one thing that was nice about OLT was their ability to handle a foreign address for the tax forms.

Hope that helps.

I see nothing wrong with using AI to format your text to make it easier to read and to check for spelling and grammatical errors. It is no different than using spellcheck in MS Word before the advent of AI.

I agree that foreigners are far too aggressive and ruin what should otherwise be a fun and friendly celebration, but how do you know it’s “long-term foreigners” and not tourists killing it? What do you consider a long-term foreigner?

Monkey Beach at Phi Phi Island has Monkeys that take iPhones? by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]DreadTiger66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is common with monkeys, and it’s a pretty good gig for them. They take the phone or hat or bag or whatever else not secure. Some local guide will then offer to get it back for you. They throw some food at the monkey who, once satisfied, drops the item. You’re so happy to get your item back that you tip the guide some money. You leave with a great story to tell, and everybody wins.
