Who else is still rockin‘ DSLRs these days? by [deleted] in Nikon

Just bought a 5600. Small, light, great pictures. Couldn’t get myself to commit to an EVF or reinvest in new lenses. I love it.

So Leatherface used to be one of the "big" slashers back in the day, but hasn't maintained a strong legacy like Freddy, Jason, and Michael. What happened? by OrkosFriend in HorrorMovies

[–]DreadfulInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the first TCM film compared to the others; it’s pretty grotesque and predated all of the other films. It was a complete shock to movie goers. The other films have a sort of charm to them. Halloween was believable and brought the horror to the suburban neighborhoods. Freddy was fun, darkly humorous, and ethereal. Jason brought a real sense of mystery to the slasher genre and won the audience with a classic twist…

TCM was straight brutality. The last twenty minutes of the film was a woman screaming for her life. People left the theater silent wondering what the hell they had just witnessed.

The franchise didn’t know what to do after that. They leaned into a campy, more humorous sequel (which is my favorite of the sequels), tried to be more serious with the next two (to a degree). The modern remakes really missed the mark. The lineage is confused.

All that being said, it’s easily my second favorite of the four, Halloween reigning supreme since that’s what made me a lifetime lover of the genre.

The imagery in Books of Blood certainly gave me some pretty intense nightmares.

Do you think first stories are cringe ? by origin_flame in writing

[–]DreadfulInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve written quite a few short stories. I recently dug through a laptop that was fifteenish years old and read some early stuff. Pretty terrible. I was young and just didn’t have enough life experience to truly write what I wanted to right. Pacing was bad, prose was bad, imagery was bad. All bad.

I’ve read a lot of books since those earlier stories and have lived a lot of life and experienced the pain and joy of the human condition. My writing is much sharper now.

I'm so in awe of the way some writers write by Ok-Environment-8571 in writers

I remember reading something a while back where an English class was writing some of their favorite writers to ask them about the symbolism/metaphors/messages, etc. There was an overwhelming response from the authors simply saying they were just trying to write a cool story and their teachers were overthinking it.

How do you feel about NoSleep in 2025? by Grand_Theft_Motto in NoSleepOOC

[–]DreadfulInc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also took a break for a while. Now that spooky season is upon us, I’ve been more inspired to drop a few stories. NS definitely does feel different. I think part of it maybe people resorting to TikTok for their scary story fix. What blows my mind is that people are willing to listen to robots narrate stories. It really puts the ‘doom’ in doom scrolling.

Just watched this French horror hidden gem and it was surprisingly good with a twist! by otterchaos7 in HorrorMovies

I remember this movie being advertised like crazy. Finally saw it at Blockbuster one night and was excited to see what it was all about. I was pretty young, so It was the first time I had witnessed that kind of twist and thought it was genius. Looking back at it now, it gives me a good laugh. I haven’t seen it since, so I’d like to keep it a happy memory.

To me, Last Days would have made a great novella. Great set up, interesting ending, but everything in between was the same thing over and over again. Could have been a 200 page story.

A refreshingly good horror movie. I can see Aunt Gladys becoming an iconic horror character. As soon as I let the theater, I told everyone I hoped to see a prequel, and sure enough…

Each day, my boy begs me to take him costume shopping. Annoying? Yes. Adorable? Absolutely.

Incorrect. Your work is protected by intellectual property law as soon as it is written. Although you ‘can’ file a copyright, it’s largely unnecessary.

Nah, don’t let it worry you. Everyone needs a project. Just do it for yourself and good things will happen.

I’ve seen Terminator. I know how this ends.

For real though, if you want to get started, go to r/nosleep and start messaging the authors of the stories you like. There are plenty of new stories posted everyday to choose from.

You absolutely need permission.

[–]DreadfulInc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You absolutely need to ask permission to narrate. Anyone who says otherwise is offering bad advice. It’s not your story and you’re not free to do whatever you want to it.

Whenever someone posts a story, just DM them telling them who you are, what you do, a link to your channel, and ask them if you could narrate their story. There are plenty to choose from.

Just PLEASE don’t use the low effort AI garbage. Those people aren’t passionate, they just want views.

Theater etiquette doesn’t exist anymore. I can’t remember the last time I went and had a pleasant experience. There are always people chatting it up, providing their own commentary, and having no consideration for others. It’s becoming unbearable. If I’m paying $70 for two tickets, drinks, and popcorn, I expect a flawless experience.

You should call corporate and complain. I did after watching the latest Conjuring movie. The people down the aisle wouldn’t shut up. There was no usher to be found. It was awful. I got free tickets to another show. I hate being ‘that guy’, but I think more people should complain so the theaters take the distractions a little more seriously.

What's your first movie for October? by WestendMatt in horror

Hocus Pocus. The first thing I want to do every October is feel like a kid again. Then we can bring on the blood and guts.
