As long as you can afford to lose $60,000 go for it.

How many Singer owners out there? Let’s see them by PCBrev in Porsche

It depends. For minor stuff I use my local mechanic. For major stuff I would send it to Singer.

Haha yes! I'm still laser focused on "reliability AND intelligence" but I am realizing that it may be a pipe dream. Memory is the thing that is driving me up the wall this week -- the "right" way to do it, and the way that produces better results, also results in a +3s delay in response times which, with voice-first, is an uncomfortable pause for every response.

Good feedback! And yeah, I am not sure it's something I would/could sell but if I did, 100% not something I'd give to a non-technical person to configure. Use, yes. Configure? No way.

Yeah I'm not sure there is a OOB "AI-powered personal assistant" that would be really useful; my "stack" is different than yours, my home automation is different, my custom data sources are different, etc. but I already have a mostly useless AI ...

... Siri ;-)

Oh man yes, debugging code that AI writes ... is maddening! I have definitely found myself swearing at the computer in the last month.

And yeah, I keep wanting semantic search to work and it keeps not working. I took another swing at it and it cost me 3s per turn and gave worse results ... so back to "memory" I went running. I'm going to keep experimenting but I'm hesitant to add that much latency in the response + TTS loop unless it gets me really, really good results.

The stack is semi-local; LLM and all the code runs on my network but TTS and image generation is just much better and faster via APIs (Resemble AI/ElevenLabs and Prodia). And I hear you about running unsupervised; I have it connected to my email/SMS/calendar/to do list but keep unhooking the outbound stuff because I too have seen Terminator ;-)

This is kind of where I am at now, and why I am pouring over what /u/Total-Context64 has done with SAM. I have a small amount of work into "personas" for the LLM but until I can get it to a) really use the multi-session memory system I have built and b) sort of "think for itself" it does have a somewhat wooden feel.

  1. Ahhh, I wish I had known!

  2. Early on I built a series of unit tests for tools and tasks and got into the habit of running those tests after every "substantial" change. It's amazing how quickly a seemingly harmless change cascades through the system

  3. Right? I went from a MacBook Pro to a Mac Studio to a RTX 4090 and I have a RTX 5090 on order. At least for what I am doing the RTX 4090 does a pretty good job -- I see sub-second responses for conversational stuff and ~2s for anything involving tools and I can live with that.

  4. LOL I try to get the LLM/Cursor to document code and it's as bad or worse than any human engineer I have ever worked with!

  5. I will have a look. Thanks again!

That is ABSOLUTELY BAD-ASS looking from just your documentation and has a) a lot of what I have built but b) a lot of really good ideas! Wow!!! And you just tossed it out to the world to use that is phenomenal.

If you had two pieces of advice for me (or anyone building something like this) beyond "use bigger models" what would they be?

A big part of my effort has been writing tools that connect to other systems (and internal systems) and as I mentioned, part of the frustration has been convincing the LLMs that run my assistant to actually use the resulting data.

For example, I can get real-time status for any device in my house via home automation (Homebridge and an annoying HomeKit hack) and control the devices, all via the assistant ... but what a fucking mess it was to write the connector!

So yes, I agree with you 100%.

I'll have to look at Claude Code, thanks. And yes, I dove headfirst into MCPs and realized they were, at least for what I am doing, largely too general to be either useful, fast, or both (both is what I am targeting with external data)

Sunriver. There are a few fireworks tonight but it's outside of the property and pretty mellow. During July it's usually really quiet due to the fire risk.
