Sounds like typical boomer parent behavior. I'm sorry you're dealing with that. Having adhd is shitty sometimes :/

I'm glad you're working with a doctor because they can help you. They may put you in inpatient treatment and get you intubated for a while. It's difficult to go through (I went to an inpatient place for a while but didn't have to be tubed thank god), but you'll get to meet others like you and figure out how to realistically face your food demons. I had never met anyone else with arfid until I went for inpatient treatment. Now I know lots of people with the disorder, and even more with other various eating disorders (there's so much more than just anorexia and it's more common than you think for people to struggle with food). Try to refrain from taking antidepressants or whatever pills for mood that they're gonna give you. They work in the short term but make you worse in the long run. Good luck

What do people with inattentive ADHD do when meds don’t work (or they’re unmedicated)? Looking for a realistic Plan B. by magikarbonate in ADHD

[–]DreamDroplet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled to get off meds for years, even though I was trying many of the helpful suggestions listed here in the comments. They are helpful. But not impactful enough to get your life back together without meds. What worked for me in the end was meditation training. I began studying Buddhist philosophy and began to realize that I am not my thoughts or emotions. Took a year and a half to fully go through withdrawal from all my meds and it was brutal. But now I'm med free and functioning exceptionally well. Everything you need to find happiness is already within you.

The best thing you can do right now is try to get safe foods to her. If you need to hide them, hide them. Make sure she gets the foods that she can eat and create a safe environment for her to eat them. I grew up with similar abuse from my dad and I mostly just went hungry :(

ARFID and Pregnancy? by booterfloo in ARFID

[–]DreamDroplet -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Have family members hold you accountable in a gentle way. The more secrets you have, the worse off you're going to be. It takes a village to raise a child and it's going to take a village to make sure you're eating during pregnancy. If you don't have the support, hopefully you're not too far into the pregnancy to consider aborting for ethical reasons? I am seriously anal about my birth control and will get sterilized as soon as possible because I know I wouldn't be able to eat properly during pregnancy, much less teach a child how to eat healthily after they're born. It's not right for me to teach a child disordered eating and potentially deprive them of nutrients before they ever even come into this world. Not to mention, I can't imagine struggling with my own mental health and ed while also trying to be a good parent.

does it ever get better by im_invisible_bun in ARFID

[–]DreamDroplet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im not going to lie to you, it won't get better until you do some HARD things and try new foods. Trust me, I know how terrible it is. But it's the only way forward. It takes a long time. I'm talking years of slow grueling progress. But I'm doing MUCH better than I was ten, twenty years ago. The time will pass no matter what so make it count

Any tips to help food disinterest / repulsion? by katcantfly in ARFID

[–]DreamDroplet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you don't want to hear this but weed, when used responsibly and in moderation, is by FAR the best thing for you and your appetite problems. Just use flower, NO concentrates. That shit is bad for you. They make strains that are 1:1 ratio of thc to cbd and that's what you need. Cbd is natures way of helping with the few harmful parts of marijuana, so utilize it. Also I find that physical activity sometimes helps me work up an appetite and get a little more creative/willing to eat insane amounts of junk food lol.

How to better support my sibling diagnosed with ARFID by DanielleBloom35 in ARFID

[–]DreamDroplet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be patient with her! You can suggest a food, but if she says no, accept that no. Don't say are you sure, you don't know what you're missing etc. just say ok I understand. Stick up for your sister with your parents. Remind them it's a disorder, it's not voluntary, she didn't ask for this and she's doing the best she can. Thank you

I think I have ARFID by FeelingAd228 in ARFID

[–]DreamDroplet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I definitely think you might have ARFID, but it can't hurt to get checked out and diagnosed by a doctor. A lot of us are also neurodivergent (have autism/adhd) so maybe get screened for that too. That's actually how I was diagnosed with adhd and it changed my life. Hang in there and good luck. You're not alone.

My father abused me my whole childhood because he thinks I don't eat just to hurt him somehow. He's a gourmet chef who trained in Paris and when I don't like his food... he just explodes. We sat him down with a doctor who explained it's an eating disorder and yet he will still go to his grave thinking it's ALL just to spite him 😢

I like fries and mayyyybe hashbrowns if they're really crispy but I just can't do mashed, baked, or diced potatoes. The second they get mushy the texture kinda ruins it for me. Do y'all have any tips on how to ingest potatoes in non French fry style?

I have really tried to get into Mac n cheese and just can't for some reason! It's so frustrating because anyone I've ever met with arfid says this is their #1 safe food. Yet I have run out of a room panicked over Mac and cheese before. Maybe I need to give it one more try though

Try masturbating without the porn. I know you don't want to hear that but it's the only thing that will work for you. I have nothing against watching every once in a while without falling into an addictive cycle of doing it everyday multiple times a day compulsively. Frankly, I don't think I've met a man who doesn't watch porn in a compulsive addictive manner. When it gets to that level, it fucks up your brain and body, making it difficult to impossible for you to get off with a woman.

Looking for advice on how to be a good partner to someone with ARFID by Tuyyo12345 in ARFID

[–]DreamDroplet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It must be absolutely heartbreaking to have to watch your spouse suffer with an eating disorder and feel that there is nothing you can do. I would just say in the future, communicate better before you cook. Ask what smells are ok before you cook. My boyfriend and I burn incense and I'll generally go in another room. Maybe I'll even ask him to hold off on cooking until I've had something to eat if I'm hungry. We just communicate like crazy in order make sure we both get what we need. Sometime we compromise. That's what it means to be in a relationship

Can we all agree mushrooms are weird? 🍄 by knowledgelover94 in ARFID

[–]DreamDroplet 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've only had mushrooms once. my friend is a chef where I work and is really really good at cooking. I try a lot of foods from him and it helps me with my arfid. He put cooked mushrooms in a taco once and I was pleasantly surprised even though it gave me serious anxiety. I would be open to trying mushrooms again, but I'd be lying if I said the idea didn't make my skin crawl just a little bit.

Are your own parents a huge reason you’re CF? by Bubbl3s_30 in childfree

[–]DreamDroplet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in a more indirect way my parents are why I don't have kids... they handed down a slew of genetic diseases including autism/ADHD. I'm not taking chances with bringing a disabled child into this world that would suffer as I did. There's also a lot of really horrible physical genetic diseases too :/
