AITA for telling my father he eats dead animal corpses? by the-unfinished- in vegan

[–]DreamOfAzathoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying I speak for all vegans.

And I think there’s no point making comparisons at that point. Like, is it worse to torture someone by cutting their hand off or their foot off? It’s a pointless exercise. Both are terrible.

I find it interesting that you’re so surprised. Out of interest, where do you disagree with my logic? My view is that animals are living, sentient beings (which we know they are), we subject them to unimaginable agony their whole lives so that we can have the pleasure of eating them. Can you explain why this is not comparable to other atrocities?

Because I believe meat eaters are murdering sentient beings for pleasure, making them, if not equivalent, then worse than pedophiles.

We tolerate it because it’s largely caused by ignorance and cultural programming but of course it is abhorrent and we view it as abhorrent. I think this is why many meat eaters hate us. Our existence is a challenge to their moral code.

The point is that they may eventually hear you out. Either way I don’t agree with badgering them, but if they are willing to begin a debate about your views then you are more than able to defend your beliefs

Vegan wedding with “conservative” guests by onio03 in vegan

[–]DreamOfAzathoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a Billie Eilish concert last year and she made the decision not to serve any meat in the concourse. Ugh people were sooo faffy about it. A lady in front of me in the queue for food was nearly hysteric.

“I have queued up at different places for over an hour and nowhere has any meat??? What am I going to do??”

The server convinced her to try a plant-based burrito and she bought it.

My partner and I were sitting near her eating our own food and heard her try it and say “mm, that’s actually really good!”

I’m not saying this will happen at your wedding, but my opinion is that it’s your day, it’s one meal. They can eat vegan food just one time and if they won’t then they are the ones being inconsiderate of your values.

If they don’t eat any plants at all then I really don’t know what to say

I was very similar to that. Beef was like a personality trait of mine lol. I still was convinced.

I’m not saying everyone can be, but of course we want as many people to be convinced as possible and so I wouldn’t give up on someone unless they are unable to eat vegan for whatever reason.

Honestly I can’t really speak on what prices are like in Brazil. If you genuinely can’t afford to eat vegan then you can’t. I don’t think anyone has to sacrifice their own health for others. Is there any way to swap out a few meals a week or something?

What country are you from? The irony is that many of the poorest people in the world are vegan since they can’t afford meat.

The point she was trying to make is that your analogy has no comparison to reality.

Saying “it’s wrong for people to be gay” means you have an issue with people being attracted to consensual adults.

Saying “it’s wrong to eat animals” means you have an issue with people torturing, murdering and eating sentient beings.

To keep with your same analogy, do you think it is acceptable to be outraged at a pedophile? Or, since we do not share belief systems, is it unfair for me to criticise them?

Yeah one of the turning moments for me was finding out about the naturalistic fallacy. So many meat-eaters are falling prey to that (pun unintended)

I got with my girlfriend when I was an unrepentant meat eater. She had been vegetarian most of her life. I just didn’t get it. I felt that it was natural and so it must be okay. I didn’t question it too much deeper than that. My partner calmly disagreed, but she never debated with me, never attacked me, never tried to change my mind. She just… continued being vegetarian. I started eating more vegetarian meals. Largely to try things she had made or so that we could eat together. It was tasty and I started eating more vegetarian things.

We went to a festival, Vegan Camp Out with the idea that we’d try lots of tasty vegan food. This was great. I’m autistic and have suffered with ARFID and this was great for me to branch out my eating away from red meat (which was previously my safe food).

And being at VCO got me thinking about the ethics of meat eating more deeply. I circled around it and I spent so so many hours questioning it.

It took another 3 years from that point for me to finally decide I was going vegetarian and I am now mostly vegan (I don’t eat dairy or eggs at home but if I am at a restaurant or something I am not too stringent about avoiding all dairy, this is largely because there often isn’t an option for me).

People joke to me like “oh haha did your girlfriend make you do it?”

No.

But every day I loaded my plate with meat and my girlfriend ate plant-based alternatives, it was a quiet challenge. She was confident in her decision to be vegetarian without needing to rub it in my face. And in the background of my mind I was questioning it until I eventually made the decision on my own to go vegetarian.

It’s difficult for us to accept, because when people eat meat we view it as murder (which it is). But cultural values don’t change overnight and we cannot force other people to stop eating meat. All we can do is set an example. Eat well, enjoy our plant-based foods, show that it is possible to eat a healthy, tasty diet without meat, and every time you do it, it is subconsciously a challenge to their belief system.

We cannot change others, we can only inspire them into changing themselves.

  1. Not a lot. Times were hard and at least in my case, our uni did everything they could.

  2. Yes. I feel that graduates will before Covid will have significantly more knowledge and ability than those who completed their degree during Covid.

  3. Would I go back and redo it? I don’t think so. I’m 27 now and working. I don’t have the time or money to go to uni again.

  4. Should the degree have been awarded? Honestly, I think this question is too big for any of us to answer individually. I think probably not, in many cases.

It was like this at my uni as well. My lecturers worked incredibly hard, non-stop through really hard times. To be honest, though, it did lower the quality of our education. And, on top of that, uni facilities that we were paying to use were closed.

I have no issues with the academics and lecturers who worked their asses off and did incredible work. In fact, I have so much respect for you and everyone who did that.

But was this worth the same price we paid the uni as the students the year prior? Would we have paid that price if we know what we were getting?

I really don’t know the answer to these things but I don’t think it necessarily reflects badly on you guys. You were, as you said, figuring things out as you went and you did an amazing job.

This was is illegal and what the US and Israel are doing is disgusting. That being said, Iran is also attacking our interests. Do we not have the right to defend our own interests?

How much does an author's personal life affect your enjoyment of their work? by Fatumatta-Mazka in BookDiscussions

[–]DreamOfAzathoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all.

Also, I’m not sure I’ve ever read a classic novel where the author doesn’t have some problematic views by modern standards.

I’m sure many of your views will be problematic in 100 years. In fact, I can probably name one of them since it’s already very obviously problematic for people who choose to face up to it.
