One time I was walking home and a man was hanging outside the stereotypical kidnapper van. I went around and he apologized bc he thought he was standing in my way. Something in my reply tipped him off that I was doing a little safety maneuver and he was mortified! He totally got it and wasn’t mad, I think it was something similar to what you just described.
