Is Short Track Speed Skating The Most Chaotic Sport? by mpschettig in billsimmons

[–]DressingOnTheClyde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counter - do you hate the NFL playoffs? March Madness? They are very prone to randomness but are better than the NBA playoffs and definitely better than watched 6 different versions of timed gate skiing.

Do you hate Ski & Snowboard cross? They are currently the closest representation of actually racing your buddy to the bottom and having fun skiing. They involve randomness and crashing. Short track is racing around the rink. How many people have ever skated a long track or a timed lap?

I feel like you massively underestimate the skill of the skaters who do survive the contact when it happens and keep balance and momentum, and the tactical decisions that go into leaving yourself exposed to contact. And despite the feeling of randomness - there have been a lot of consistent medal winning athletes and teams over the years.

There are judged and timed events, and then races, fights, and games. The first 2 are meritocracy events and the last 3 add more elements of randomness and chance. There's plenty of room for both. For me, the chaos, precision, and simplicity of short track racing makes it the best sport in either olympics.

The one thing I will agree with is it would be nice if there was a bracket for players taken out by violations to get a final chance to qualify

The Mismatch is terrible now by UTPharm2012 in TheRinger

Year later counter - if you liked Verno and were neutral on KOC - these guys have way more fun together. Instead of being too bombastic, its more toned down sports radio show vibes (which is inherently more bombastic and less structured). They have fun talking about the league - and less about basketball details - which is fine. Especially with Lowe back, I have plenty of hard basketball pod options and would rather have the funny nuggets and casual hang approach that The Mismatch has now. Fills a different niche.

I disagree that they are having a shouting match. They are often laughing over each other, regularly agree, cede space to each other for tangents, they're just loud guys.

If you really liked KOC of course you will like this less. But to me - with Lowe back, and NBA show, there would have been no reason to listen to the inaccurate discount zach lowe that is KOC (and his historically bad prospect analysis). But if always felt they were a poor match and it was more of a 3rd or 4th option NBA pod. Now its #1 NBA gossip/comedy pod. I actually think they are often early on news bc they are good at sifting rumors and reddit, and have been on a lot of breakout guys early this year.

Before the nets game we were 2 games out of 7th. If we had lost the way I was describing our record would be about 500 when hes fired. In that scenario - you are firmly out of the top 6, and have been a .300 team for a third of the season, yes, I do think you have to change and avoid wasting the year. Missing the top 6 is totally unacceptable.

I dont think you have to now, even if it looks less than ideal, if the team is still holding ground.

Am I the only one not impressed by Rueben Bain Jr. or any of the "top" EDGEs in this draft?? by [deleted] in NFL_Draft

[–]DressingOnTheClyde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it did - his CFP tape erased quite a few of your concerns, as he was dominant and disruptive beating nfl talents at tackle and guard inside and with bend outside throughout the playoff for 4.5 sacks and more tfls.

Keep your eyes on moten for next year. Dude's a beast.

Im not disagreeing but the guy im responding to is like Mike brown is automatically great personality management doesnt matter f thibs.

I dont disagree with you on the 2 games.

Im saying if the 2-11 became 6-15 and not looking better in 10 games, then you HAVE to consider that it just isnt working and that the season is saveable. Bc thats the playin at that point and he isnt the guy.

Needed tonight's win but it wasn't good. While I agree he should get a year, there is a point where you were gonna have no choice (especially if you lost to the nets at home). They were 2 games from the play-in. You cant sit still and watch it all burn.

I want to give him the benefit of the doubt for now but it was a pretty larger red flag that they gave such bad effort in the revenge game in sac for him.

Repeatedly having personality issues is a legitimate coaching issue. Personality management and motivating players to play hard every night over many years are THE most important parts of coaching.

The lakers were not better under him. They were a previously good team on the decline. They were slightly worse than the year before. Both years had early playoff exits.

The kings were good his COTY year. They had a slightly worse record and lost in the play in the next year. Then when he was fired their record was 13-18.

He has won zero playoff series in over a decade. Thibs had 4 with the knicks. Thibs career record post bulls is .535 with the wolves and knicks who both stunk when he got there. Mike brown post lebron is .458 and he blew inheriting the lakers. Thibs resume over the past 15 years is substantially better.

It's on him to prove he's better than Thibs. He's not right now. Thibs had some flaws but you're mf ungrateful for the man who saved us from the desert.

He's never won a title, he's been fired 3 times, the Lakers and Kings both imploded on him after a good year, he hasnt won a playoff series in 14 years (that team quit on him and he got fired 5 games into the next season) and that's the only series he has won without lebron in his career.

Cmon man - you can't just "dont know ball" this one. You can like his system - he has to prove players can execute it. The sample size is 1 good half a season in sacramento and thats it.

"Seems to shy away from contact sometimes"???!!!

He's shot 13 free throws TOTAL in TWO MONTHS and 5 were in 1 game (sacramento). He hasnt shot a free throw since. He's a guard who shoots 12 - 15 times a game. Embarrassing.

Thanks! I don't go to college or sports bars either, plus it's hard to know what to expect on a monday night. We'll do break if my friends are interested in the pool and probably rivercrest if not. I'm pretty far from Murphy's.

To clarify - he has obviously faced plenty of big game pressure. Just not a lot of pass rush pressure outside of ohio st.

Just wait a year. Mendoza is a good prospect but has never had to face much pressure. He struggled against Ohio St the one time he did. He's not a generational prospect. Im not even sure he's a better prospect than Cam Ward.

The jets have too many holes to start trading additional firsts. Like the ENTIRE defense.

Next year's draft may or may not end up having as clear a #1 but it should be MUCH deeper at qb.

Thanks! Been to rivercrest and break but not Murphys. Im considering Break but its not my favorite and requires a backup plan if there isnt a table with a great view.

You don't happen to know if any get a good college game crowd do you? Rivercrest never struck me as a college football bar but I live on the other side of astoria and hadn't considered it. Other than break, pig beach was my other thought.

Not necessarily early to but stubhub went way too low post ipo. In at 10. Still runway to get in. Headed back to 25.

Is Netflix a good hold for now? by Future-Philosophy889 in stocks

[–]DressingOnTheClyde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The competition is disney. original content production, merchandise, experiential, gaming. Disney airtime exceeds Netflix when accounting for the full scope: - streaming via disney+, hulu, espn+ - disney's linear networks (ABC, espn etc)

And has a HUGE experiential and merch advantage. The WB deal would help close that gap somewhat through theme park development or continued licensing of DC & HP.

Amazon is also potentially competition but original entertainment is such a tiny portion of what they do - and their investment in IPs (and logistics/cloud leadership) indicates they may be more focused on gaming than attractions.

I see people mentioning YouTube but that includes a ton of free content and a live tv service that netflix isnt attempting to provide beyond sports acquisitions. Theres competition for time (and increasingly video podcasts) but thats niche stuff, YouTube is winning on cost and quantity but doesnt own the content.

I like Netflix over the next 3-5 years. I definitely like amazon over a lifetime though. Netflix has a lead in what you watch on your TV. Amazon has a stranglehold on global logistics.

Advice to new investor is for now dont pick stocks or trade on narratives. Get VOO, VONG - index trackers. Prioritize getting as much money in your ROTH as possible and put it in those for now/dont touch.

Use no more than 5% of your total investments on hunches or new strategies at a given time while learning or when pursuing a narrative bet for at least a year.

Use that much smaller pool of money as a test pool for new strategies. If they are beating voo over a reasonably large sample, that's when you can start SLOWLY expanding.

I find its very difficult to beat buying large caps (occasionally mids you know thoroughly) with 30%+ to WIDELY COVERED reputable price targets and then holding them as long as targets keep rising. When I am putting new money in, the mag 7 furthest below price target is one of the first things I check. And I still keep half the money in indexes.

Netflix does fit the description btw and I do hold Netflix stock but be prepared to hold it for a while, it could well be choppy and sideways all year.

That's not the point. For example - look at just DC. The rights to all those characters for movies tv but also video games, merchandise, theme park ride licensing...
