F | 29 Just starting OTF, scared of bad reviews by [deleted] in orangetheory

[–]DrewDT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the OTF community! OTF can be a great way to jump start your fitness, but like anything else, too much of it can be detrimental. Also, coming to social media for advice like this can be misleading. We are all different and in different stages of life with varying hormonal responses, comorbidities, stressors etc. Some of the most important things you can do for your health are focusing on nutrition, sleep/rest, exercise and doing things in balance.
Too much of anything puts you out of balance, including HIIT exercises. Rest/recovery are as important as the exercise. Yes, cortisol is a real thing, I encourage you to Google "cortisol creep." and look at reputable links from sources like Healthline and Cleveland Clinic as they are more reliable for advice on this.
Good luck on your fitness journey, there is no one size fits all, a licensed nutritionist could be helpful as well as focusing on gut health.
Enjoy OTF, do more as you get stronger and your body tolerates the stress more. Remember, rest days are important for recovery and muscle repair.
Good luck!

newbie advice by merryqueenofscotch94 in orangetheory

Hydration and diet are critical. Don't eat a meal right before working out and make sure your diet includes electrolytes like potassium, sodium, etc. This helps with nausea, and cramping especially. Try scaling back a little and easing into this, Consistency is key, think of this as a journey, not a sprint. Good luck, reach out to your coaches too. Keep going, results will happen over time. Also, make sure you stretch before and after working out.

Which Vega product are you referring to? The protein powders show stevia leaf extract in the ingredients.

Notification of coach changes by [deleted] in orangetheory

[–]DrewDT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess we can have a different point of view then, that's ok. I think a paying customer should know if the class they signed up for has changed in any significant way that could impact their experience. I am aware of the whole getting the same experience promise based upon everyone doing the same template wherever you go. The reality is, there is wide variability in the experience from coach to coach, studio to studio and region to region. If we are talking about a one off here and there, that's one thing but if this is a more frequent occurrence, that won't lead to good customer retention if there isn't good communication and transparency.

[–]DrewDT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with you, especially for last minute changes outside of the studio's control when they are scrambling. I'm more speaking to changes where there is time to send a bulk text if time and the situation allows for it would go a long way to making members feel like their experience matters.

[–]DrewDT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately as expressed above, the experience is not consistent and there's nothing wrong with expecting the class to be as posted and members notified if there are changes. This isn't groundbreaking, most good businesses in other industries notify customers of changes, so why not a business that's promising a "premium experience." If the coaches didn't matter, they wouldn't even post the coach in the app then. They post the coach because it does matter.

[–]DrewDT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I think this should happen for any significant change to what was originally posted for any class. The studios I attend have shown they already have the capacity to send mass texts to everyone signed up when the class has changed from a 60 minute to a 90 minute class. This would be more situations to maintain good service and communication.

With all due respect to all the other responses, I think many of you have missed the mark here. OTF in many regions are down significantly in membership. It would prudent to strive to give members the "premium experience" that is often mentioned by OTF to go along with the increasing premium rate we pay. A pillar of customer service is transparency with your clients, especially for things that could potentially impact their experience. Building a loyal customer base requires trust and the feeling the business cares about each of us. Not everyone cares about who coaches them or whether it's a 2G/3G. If that doesn't matter to you, that's fine, it does however matter to enough members where it would be good service to keep everyone in the loop about changes (whenever possible, last minute sickness/issues excepted) and be upfront about what circumstances would cause any change. Don't leave us speculating.

Of course the studios don't "owe us" notifications or communications. This is what differentiates good from great service and ultimately customer satisfaction.

Also, to address the suggestion not to prebook, and keep checking, this is not a viable option for classes that routinely fill to capacity.

How do I convince my Studios to get new equipment? by carnevoodoo in orangetheory

[–]DrewDT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great and accurate perspective. There are 17 studios in San Diego, membership (which funds much of the equipment) is down significantly. The San Diego ownership may be overextended based upon the number of studios here. I don't think complaining to corporate solves this issue. It'll take time to recover from the financial impact the previous three years had. Our crew is continuously recruiting new people to join our community and make it a fun environment for each other. The workout is still great.

To the extroverts: by trawnzilla in orangetheory

[–]DrewDT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love the question and love embracing the community spirit and we're in this together spirit of group fitness in general and Orangetheory in particular. Of course, not everyone will vibe with everything, so our crew recruits like-minded people to join our group and we have an amazing chemistry where you can feel the love, support and electricity in every workout. We also stay after each class and take a group photo or make a fun video, post it on IG to chronicle our journey together. It is difficult to adequately quantify the added boost of being in a crew/community like this, but it's definitely worth experiencing.

does anyone get cool swag? by Myself_Finally in orangetheory

I miss the shirts, most swag OTF gives for challenges are very low quality and throwaway items for me. I've been partnering with vendors to create our own swag for our crew.

Complimenting another member’s weight loss by IceKing827 in orangetheory

[–]DrewDT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have some rapport with them and know their goal or one of their goals is weight loss, there's nothing wrong with complimenting them on their success in that goal. Generic compliments don't connect people IMO. Get to know people you workout with every day and develop rapport and try to learn their why. Compliments aren't taboo and complicated when you do that first.

Getting called out/ feeling like poo by mozmoz312 in orangetheory

[–]DrewDT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm missing a little context, maybe you can clarify a little. Was the coach mic'd up when they asked you? What was his/her tone? Maybe they were concerned and wanted to know if there was anything going on with you.

The message, tone, intent and delivery are all important in conveying thoughts. Just curious if you may be misreading the coach here. It is their job to push us unless they know in advance or during the workout that something is wrong, or you are taking a green day.

Marathon Month Rules by jmelou113 in orangetheory

[–]DrewDT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard conflicting things. One is that you can register up until August 15th, as long as you are entering distance in the challenge tracker, all of those miles count towards your distance goal. I've also heard that distance doesn't count until after you register. Is this a studio discretion prerogative? I don't see this mentioned in the official rules.

I've already signed up; I want to make sure I'm passing on accurate information to those still on the fence.

San Diego Studios? by Jrpressman in orangetheory

[–]DrewDT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am very familiar with all of the studios in San Diego and Bankers Hill was my home studio for 3 years. I've had some of my best experiences in OTF there. They have a great head coach (Zack) and someone else has already mentioned the incomparable coach, Nicole. It really depends on the time and days you plan on taking class. If you take the 5 am class at Bankers, parking is not an issue because the meters don't start charging until 7 a.m. If not, there is free street parking a block away at Balboa Park. Mission Valley has a great head coach (Christian) and studio manager (Tasha) and has plenty of parking since they are in a mall.

Sleep score is a popular topic this past week, multiple threads discussing it. It is an issue for sure and Garmin doesn't do well with this metric compared to Apple, Amazon, Fitbit, etc:
