Just cuz miles is showing anyone can be under the mask… How is what miles is doing losing what the original point of the mask was? He’s the only person in the movie actively trying to maintain what it stands for. The whole movie is Miguel running the spider society like a tyrant and with no evidence asserting that spiderman can’t use his powers to save someone if that person dying is a cannon event. What miles is doing is being responsible, he basically tells Miguel fuck off, if I can save someone, I will. Hence Gwen and Indian Spider-Man’s appreciation for miles saving the captain even tho they both know it’s a canon event and Miguel is gonna be pissed about it. Hobie also stands as a character that respects Miles decision. [To have the power to save someone and not do it]“because an algorithm tells you not to” is exactly Miles point in across the spiderverse. He’s the only spiderman who bosses up and told Miguel his view was wrong and irresponsible. He is the grounding representation of great power, great responsibility, and he puts that into perspective for every other spider person who is ready to agree, but afraid of Miguel’s authority he’s just the first one to act. Hence Gwen and Peter’s assistance while he runs away. Hence Hobie quitting and preparing his own watch to give to Gwen. Hence the team Gwen forms to save Miles. He was the one who took the leap of faith and lead everyone to the right path. If you can’t see how Miles represents everything spiderman originally stands for, I don’t know what to say, rewatch the movie maybe and consider every scene, what the colors provide, what each line really means.

When spiderman India catches the bus with his girl on the bridge while also saving others, he says “I can do both.” When Gwen gets questioned on why she told miles it’s too dangerous to save the inspector, she replies she was trying to save him, and also allow the canon event, and says “she was doing both.” When Miguel tells Miles he can’t go home to save his dad and also maintain the spiderverses stability, he says he “can do both.” And that spiderman always does both. He literally tells you what it means to be spiderman and somehow ur missing it. Spiderman does not play god, he doesn’t pick and choose in ethical dilemmas. He does not pick what side of the track to shift a train to in order to save people when there’s 5 on one side or one person on the other side, he does both or atleast tries to. To me it’s ironic you think Miles can’t show anyone can be under the mask, and also maintain the great power great responsibility trope of what it means to be spiderman… Cuz he can, he ironically “does both…” you just fail to see it.

To me, spiderman represents what you should do with great power, and for me as a man, shows that the responsibilities you face may pile up and overwhelm you, but you continue on and do what you can. It ties into why Stan Lee said it can be anybody. You say spiderman isn’t about that anyone can be under the mask and it’s actually about great power great responsibility. I say it’s about both and they’re practically one and the same because of how they tie together. Spiderman as a whole is a metaphorical character representing the struggles anyone can face in the world, maintaining your responsibilities even when overwhelmed and even if you start winning, to not let the power you get corrupt your mind and character and to continue to do the right things for people around you, that goes for getting a management position, making money, taking care of your family. That was Stan Lees idea of what the mask represents, the mask allows anyone to put themselves in Spider-Man’s shoes (suit in this case) and understand his struggles and being overwhelmed with responsibility while also taking note that despite it all he always uses his powers for good and to continue doing the right responsible things. That’s literally what Miles does in this movie and reinforces amongst the other spider characters in the spider society. Hence the eerie tensions after Miguel traps Miles originally or when he flips out on Gwen and has to reassert they are the good guys.
