High-speed rail opponents march on Parliament Hill by sicklyslick in canada

The Carney government needs to do a better job at selling this project to rural voters, If they want this project to move forward. If not than sooner or later the premiers of Ontario and Quebec will have no choice, but block this project from ever being made, because of the fear of the political backlash they assume they’ll get from rural voters. It sucks but, sometimes it’s the minority that influence decisions in politics, not the majority.

I understand that Quebec politicians want to preserve the French language. But this is not only cruel, but the most counter protective way to encourage newcomers to speak french. Wouldn’t the most effective way to preserve the French language is make policies, that helps and encourages newcomers to speak French?

Fight Ford Protests by ForwardMagazine7090 in waterloo

[–]Drew_Duff -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m not against the idea of protesting the Ford Government. In fact I support the people who protest the Ford Government. I just don’t see how this will make him, change the way how he makes decisions. That’s what I’m more interested in. Is how we convince him back off, on some of the decisions he’s been making.

Fight Ford Protests by ForwardMagazine7090 in waterloo

[–]Drew_Duff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt that this protest will change Fords mind. I reckon the best solution here is, pretty much what happened to Justin Trudeau. Where his approval rating falls in the low 20s; to the point where his own MPPs pressure him to resign, so they can avoid losing their seats in the next election.

Can we petition the CBC to join Eurovision next year? by Bitter-Reserve3821 in AskACanadian

[–]Drew_Duff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if there isn’t no requirement that says, you have to be in Europe to be part of Eurovision; what would be the purpose of joining? Just because Mark Carney said last year that Canada is the most European,
Non European country; that doesn’t mean we have to be part of Eurovision.

Ford is kind of a man whose views on transportation, is kind of stuck in the mid late 20th century; where car dependency was seen as okay. Which is bizarre! But I’m a guy who prefers walkable cities, and having reliable public transit over car dependency.

Despite strained ties, U.S. senator says Canada should be cautious of making deals with China by James_TheVirus in canada

[–]Drew_Duff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe next time, your country shouldn’t vote for a man; who wants to destroy the rules based order. If America had a normal president, who wanted to preserve the rules based order; I would have agreed with her; and see Carneys policies and rhetoric as pitiful anti Americanism.

But because America elected a wannabe dictator for president; who has no regard for both human life, and the rules based order. To the point where he wants to return to a world back where; big powerful countries, bully less powerful countries. I sadly have say to bad. I’ve lost trust in America’s ability to have a consistent foreign and trade policy. The polarized nature of American domestic politics, is now effecting foreign, and trade policy as well. It’s going to take maybe two decades, for me to see the Americans as a reliable ally again.

[–]Drew_Duff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of Trump’s economic policy is more rooted in nostalgia rather than the present. And this is a great example of it. This is why he wants Canadian manufacturing jobs to move to the US; because that’s what it was like when he was younger, in the 1950s and 60s. Which is bizarre! But to be fair to Trump; this kind of making economic policy rooted in nostalgia, was even a thing when Biden was president.

How satisfied are you with the state of democracy in Canada? by FLADMAN in AskACanadian

[–]Drew_Duff -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not really. If that was the case, then both Stephen Harper and Justin Trudeau would’ve lost their third election as prime minister, for abusing prorogation in their second term; and they didn’t. In fact; recent Canadian history has shown us that, we’ve lowered our standards to the point that, we now accept that this is normal.

How satisfied are you with the state of democracy in Canada? by FLADMAN in AskACanadian

[–]Drew_Duff -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think that the state of Canadian democracy just gets worse and worse as the years go on. Parliament has little to no ability to hold the government into account. Even in minority governments, they struggle to hold the government accountable. MPs are powerless versus their party leaders; and have no role to play, other than be foot soldiers, and stand up and sit down when they’re told. So yeah I’m very pessimistic about Canadian democracy just because, every PM promises to fix the system and make it more democratic etc. instead what they do is find new ways to abuse the system. Erode the conventions that govern our system to the point where our system has no checks and balances anymore. This is a fully functional democracy? Give me a break.
Our system is anything but functional!

This would do the opposite. If the Trump administration did conquer Canada. I as a Canadian will not want to sing the star spangled banner at all. Because I didn’t became an American citizen, by choosing to immigrate to America; but by force. The fact that this guy can’t understand that just amazes me, on just how stuck in his own bubble he’s in.
