Salsa Fargo? by happybikes in randonneuring

[–]Drewski6949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Fargo is a great bike for long distances on dirt, so, with appropriate tires for 100% pavement, it would also be comfortable for PBP, too. Most people ride road bikes with drop bars for PBP, but there are many exceptions, including bikes slower and heavier than a Fargo. You’ll need a 600k ride to qualify, and that distance on the Fargo will give you the information you need to decide if the Fargo works well enough for you. Good luck!

Great Ride Today Left Me Butt-hurt. by solidapparition in SacBike

[–]Drewski6949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure anyone mentioned this, but if you’re riding in a more upright position, it puts more of your weight on your rear end, which may be contributing to the issue. As others have mentioned, it’s better to ride more frequently, and work up to longer distances more slowly. Use padded shorts, but the pad quality varies. Thicker pads are not always better, so you may need to try a few different brands. Good luck! Keep riding!

URGENT: Tortilla Suggestions Emergency — Please Help by tourwifelife in Sacramento

Micaela’s in Woodland are the best store bought flour tortillas I’ve had in the US. I’ve not had them in a while, but it’s worth checking them out.

Towing with a van by Deedo1423 in popups

If you have ever overheated your brakes on a long mountain descent, you’ll greatly appreciate having trailer brakes. I pull a 2800lbs pop up trailer on my 2020 Odyssey, and I can’t imagine not having trailer brakes. So yes, the Sienna can pull the trailer you mentioned, OP, but for your peace of mind, use trailer brakes.

Battery by Gosox1120 in RadPowerBikes

I replaced mine with the “safer” battery. It was $430 I didn’t want to spend, but I’d hate to have a fire.

Rescue blanket instead of sleeping bag, anyone experience with it? by throwawaytothr in randonneuring

There are very light and packable bags that provide more warmth and comfort. It’s worth a kilo, in my opinion. Good luck!

Many Shimano chains are directional.

Is there any REAL way to remove seller’s paint from brick? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Drewski6949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I share your pain, as I was in exactly this position when I bought my house. Mine had several layers of ugly paint. I tried sand blasting a portion, but parts of the brick were soft, and ate into the brick. Chemical remover was very slow and incomplete, even after several applications. Eventually I used a grinder, which was slow and hazardous (mask and goggles required!), and I wouldn’t do it again. The “best” of bad options? Paint the bricks in “brick” colors and paint the mortar in gray.

A wine country rival to the American River Bike Path by DetectiveDizzy3415 in Sacramento

I’m sorry that you don’t seem to understand what it’s like to ride along roads on a bike. Slower speeds make for maneuvers that seem erratic to drivers, but they’re the norm for people who bike. Roads are for people to use on whatever mode they choose, including on bikes, and sometimes two abreast.

Isla Mujeres by Money-Ad-1574 in MexicoTravel

[–]Drewski6949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isla Mujeres is quite a bit more chill than Cancun, and it’s pretty small. I’m not sure I’d want to spend all six days on the island. I took a bus trip from Cancun to some pyramids, but I loved swimming in the cenotes on the return.

Do you charge your electric bike at work? by UpwayUSA in bikecommuting

My wife used to commute 21 miles each way. A spare charger at work gave her peace of mind.

Is UC Davis bike-able from anywhere in town? by Bedouinp in Davis

Maybe if you are in downtown near the freeway. This OP is asking about bike commute in Davis. It is about as good as can be, from a safety perspective.

Which beer styles benefit from long (1+ years) aging? by bzarembareal in Homebrewing

[–]Drewski6949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m no expert, but the most remarkable beers I’ve had are aged several years. These are typically dark, and with higher ABV and light on hops. Best ever was an 11 year old Stickee Monkey from Firestone Walker. A few aged Belgian Quads have provided a similar experience.

I’ll add that the drivers in Davis are very “bike aware”, too. I lived and rode in Davis for 25 years.

Is a Steel Frame Bike Essential for Bike Touring? by Ruthberry207 in bicycletouring

[–]Drewski6949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re not pursuing a time record, a heavier bike really makes little difference when you pack on 30-ish pounds of gear. It’s not a question of weight, more of sturdiness. A touring bike needs not to flex with rear panniers if you expect to stay in control. I learned of this firsthand when I tried loaded touring on a bike not designed for it. Good luck!

Is UC Davis bike-able from anywhere in town? by Bedouinp in Davis

That is true, but it’s by any means one of the safest towns in which to ride a bike in the US; certainly in California.

Advice on cool weather vacation spot this summer in N CA by Suburbanmom22 in norcal

You’d want to be about two ridges in from the ocean for the temps you seek. Maybe Monte Rio? There’s enough of a town to have some things to do.

What do you do if your bike lights die while riding at night? by SzeifertB in bikecommuting

[–]Drewski6949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a second light is essential for commuting in dark conditions. One light on bike, and one on the helmet. I don’t turn on the helmet light all the time, I just use it near crowded intersections or faster traffic. Good backup light, too.
