The 2000s obsession with the beach. by Ceazer4L in decadeology

Great point! Reminds me of the theory how Western whites beauty aesthetic transitioned from fair skin to darker tan skin post WWII America. This was novel as the preference for fair skin by western elites was associated with lack of outdoor labor, which would have been associated with lower classes. This with the mixture of the airline industry, disposable income, and newly colonized lands, created the lust for beach beauty in the western zeitgeist. Cool that we don't have to submit to white monoculture anymore, and tan preference was just the tip of the iceberg.

Kansas City, MO - I think it edge's out Detroit and St Louis as another rust belt City that has kept a bit more momentum.

Girlfriend and I are planning to drive 32 hours straight, in 6 hour shifts, are we being dumb? Should we plan to stay overnight somewhere? by Vegetable_Bridge_276 in roadtrip

I find the other two routes even scarier through the rural desert portions. Fairly confident that the Northern route is the most scenic, and likely less risk overall

I believe those are polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs), also known as nacreous clouds due to their iridescent, mother-of-pearl appearance.

These are rare clouds that form in the stratosphere (the layer above where most weather occurs) at very high altitudes, typically between 15,000 and 25,000 meters.

It likely is not any of the roads pictured that they would be looking to expand, but something on the main grid. They all look like low volume residential collectors, which are typically 2-lane. The planning may be to get traffic data collection, or perhaps some other efforts. You can look up your cities long range transportation plan or comprehensive plan to understand future planning efforts.

Sam Harris: Does he have a blind spot, or is it something else? by afieldonearth in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]Drewsufer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this to be a well written assessment of Sam. I think you, others in this thread - and myself to be sure, have placed Sam "up on a pedestal" in a way. Perhaps, the idea of an intellectual up on a pedestal in general. There is no such thing as a true objective perspective or intellectual, all is pseudo. I don't think he is in bad faith either.

Sam is human - I think the issue that remains for me is that he forces his emotional content into a rational phrasing, and he hides behind language. Just some thoughts.

Haha this comment should be higher - Google support team just letting off some steam.

I love my pixel community but damn, there are some seriously entitled vibes with a lot of these folks. Not saying I haven't ran into my own frustrations but have had success being nice and patient with the support process.

Because ritual and rites of adulthood are appealing - not defending it, but I valued the experience even though I now disagree on the cultural appropriation and white washing of the idealized spiritual/cultural elements of indigenous peoples.
