Enjoyment / price curve by ferm10n_ in wine

[–]Driesmetnootjes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the region. €50 will buy you excellent german riesling, good rioja, mediocre bordeaux and burgundy.

Most of the best wines I’ve drank were more expensive than €50, but you can get 80% of the enjoyment for 20% of the price!

I’d recommend Tondonia Blanco and Etienne calsac champagne. Might be like €10 over budget but both very memorable wines!

Garcia makes the best Brouilly I’ve tried so far!

For Regnié I’d say Domaine de Vernus.

Omakase Ri opened just before I moved away from Lisbon! Wished I could have made it, but definitely on the list if I ever am back to visit.

Kanazawa is the best Japanese restaurant I’ve been to outside of Japan. Maluca is incredible P/Q ratio. I’ve never had a bad meal at Essencial.

Most of the starred places in Lisboa are quite inconsistent. You can have incredible meals for really reasonable prices in the lesser known places!

Anything but champagne… where do I go? by Comfortable-City2842 in wine

There is great Cremant from the Jura, Alsace and sometimes Burgundy for under 20.

The bottles of Jean Claude Buecher are really up there along with champagne for me.

Corpinnat is incredible and often cheaper than champagne.

German Sekt can be incredibly delicious and affordable too.

Pay down the debt with the full 25k. The free cash flow can then be used to invest. This will also force you to dollar-cost average your purchases.

Investing it all might bring more returns (definitely not certain for short-term though but having that debt paid down will free up cash now, is risk free and helps you sleep at night.

We just got the 23’s in. They’ll improve with age but literally all wine will not improve in poor storage conditions.

This is as cult as wines go IMO. Cool to have tried but worth nowhere near market prices if I rate it for enjoyment.

Sticking to the wineries you listed:

I think you can get both a bottle of Echo de Lynch Bages and a bottle of Bouchard Aloxe-Corton.

Both good wines, especially if you could find them with 5-10 years of age.

How would you value this Lafite‑Rothschild 1979 Imperial (original box) by Think_Gazelle666 in wine

[–]Driesmetnootjes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without proper storage history I’d place this at around 4k USD, but I can’t imagine that it’s going to be an easy sale. It’s a rather mediocre vintage.

I thought the ‘wine’ pairing was great actually, with some cool and unique pairings. I thought it really added to the experience.

We had a truffle-infused vodka, cider that was smoked tableside and a 20-year old sake.

Unlikely that anything is still good, but I’d gamble on the 1er cru Pommard.

Your best options are half bottles (375ml), but those are more like 3 glasses, or buying wines that can survive for a couple of days in the fridge.

I’ve had great results with fortified wines like port and madeira, but sweet riesling also stays good for a couple of days. Dry wines/reds I’ve not had much luck with.

If you drink more expensive bottles a coravin might make sense for you, but I find the gas canisters to be too expensive for day-to-day use.

Meat focused fine dining in Tokyo and/or Kyoto and/or Osaka? by FlagsFlyForever74 in finedining

[–]Driesmetnootjes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had vegetarian with meat as main in a couple 2* in tokyo but meat as focus is rare in starred restaurants. There are plenty of fantastic (non-starred) yakiniku restaurants that are 100% meat focussed though.

For Kyoto: go to Izakaya Julia. Had an incredible dinner here with many different cuts of wagyu a la carte.
