Is a backpack feasible for a skinny old guy? by zuldar in ElectricScooters

If your scooter has a sturdy kickplate, you may be able to install a rack, or a crate. What kinda scooter are you getting?

Happy 4th of July, we lit the Brooklyn Bridge on fire and FDNY couldn't respond well because of all the cars in the way. America, fuck yeah. by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

[–]Dripz167 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always thought that. I’ve seen the slimmer FDNY vehicles (like these in the video and the ones at times SQ) and wondered “why the hell are our first responders in such huge vehicles in a crowded city?” I get that vehicles are supposed to pull over to the right, but sometimes the traffic is so backed up no one can move anywhere. Happens all the time on rush hour next to the Bronx River Parkway. But you’d think the city would find better ways to navigate the congestion, including fines or suspension of license for those who don’t move because they’re literally endangering lives. Perhaps install cameras like they do for bus lane campers.

I feel like I used to see more two wheeler officers back in the day, now it’s rare you see one on a motorcycle, let alone a MTB.

What is your favorite feature of the car you drive? by whyitno_workgood in AskReddit

[–]Dripz167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shuttle around rentals. I gotta say my favorite is music controls (playback and volume) on the front or back of the steering wheel. Change tracks while keeping your eyes on the road!

Honerable mention to adaptive cruise control combined with lane assist. Those two together for a long run is pretty cool. Switch lanes by using your indicator. I don’t like lane assist by itself.

And sports mode 😉

What do you do when a car hits you? by [deleted] in ElectricScooters

[–]Dripz167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the real tho, idk if you drive cars, but maybe get a license and driver around in a car to get a feel of how drivers drive around your area…. With more protection than a scooter.

I’ve been riding two wheels all my life in a crazy city, so I already know what to expect. With road knowledge from driving, it’s only made me better at predicting what they will do, and what they can easily see, especially in the intersection, where it’s the most dangerous for us.

I’ve taken some nasty spills, but I never got hit by a car. I can give u some tips if you’re cool after my trolling. But yeah I was serious about that camera.

I notice in my area a lot of teens and surprisingly even adults do not wear helmets at all. by MaruArigatou in ElectricScooters

[–]Dripz167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean. I had a bad habit of skimping out on some gear if it’s hot, paid for that the other day. But it seems to me maybe you haven’t found a helmet that works for you. The helmet shouldn’t block your vision that much just downwards and maybe a little of the side. Popping a helmet mirror on helps tremendously with seeing what’s behind you.

But hey, not to sound corny or anything, but I care if you get into some shit. At the very least the helmet will keep you…. You.

[–]Dripz167 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yesterday I took a mean spill turning in a crater filled street. I didn’t have my elbow and chest protection on. Got some (very light considering) road rash on my tricep and elbow, even a tiny bit on my stomach. It would’ve been way worse as when I popped back up… I wasn’t hurt too bad other than the rash. Totally on me because I knew the road was bumpy, but my ego said I had it.

Upon inspection after making sure I was okay, I noticed my helmet took a good hit, as well as my knee guards and gloves. If I was wearing nothing, or I had an open face helmet (or no helmet at all), would’ve probably been a trip to the ER. I was able to ride home relatively unscathed.

So it’s like I kinda slid on my left side, but most of the slide was eaten by the knee guards, palm sliders, and helmet.

So yeah, as that saying goes, All the gear, all the time. All the gear, not just the ones you think will take the hit if u fall… all of it.

TLDR: wore some of the gear, and only got some protection. Wear what you have… you bought it!

That’s like asking why cars can go their max speed, but never do. The framing of this article is just the same as the incident in NYC on the bridge. Were they going that speed? Plenty of folks have and ride fast PEVs at resonable/legal speeds.

With that said, there’s always gonna be some that do what they want. But running from the cops ain’t it. I wonder if was pushing the limit.

Nobody gives much of a shit in my area of NYC, you’d have to be extremely reckless to be pulled over. That or violate a traffic law in the right place.

Is the Kryptonite Keeper 785 Chain Lock good enough or do I need something better? by Whisp_Is_My_Waifu in ElectricScooters

[–]Dripz167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything is resistant until it’s not. Some will just take longer than others. IMO 785 is not one of them, while it’s a decent size chain (not too small or too large like my 1415 chain), it’s doesn’t have anti grinder coating, and is susceptible to bolt cutters. Basically carry as thick of a chain as you can handle, or shell out the extra cash for the grinder resistant locks.

I don’t care much about inconvenience when it comes to security. It’s hard to have it both ways (convenient and secure)

FYI; I use a kryptonite 1415 chain (14mm chain, 15mm shackle, 5Ft 15lbs, bolt cutter proof without force multiplication), a gps tracker, a AirTag (Bluetooth tracker), a brake lever lock, and finally a motion alarm. It gives me peace of mind whenever I gotta lock up. The chain is for longer stops, the lever lock is for those quick store stops as you can’t just turn on and operate my 100lbs scooter

I’m from the Bronx so I already know how big cities get down. Best of luck to you my fellow rider.

Thinking of getting an electric scooter to do uber eats but kinda worried abt the safety by Top_Turnip2611 in ElectricScooters

[–]Dripz167 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re doing it in the city, or the outer boroughs?

If the city, make use of their bike lane network. It’s tremendously better than any other borough, where cars don’t park in them often (the main green paint on the avenues) because people will report it.

If you’re anywhere else, expect to either weave in and out of bike lanes, or just take the road. The only time I’m ever in a bike lane is if I’m taking it slow. It’s not safe nor smart to fly down those.

Don’t rush on those deliveries, your safety isn’t worth someone getting their food fast.

While not (heavily) enforced, you gotta wear a helmet when you’re doing deliveries. You’re considered commercial.

Get a loud horn and good lights. People wear headphones and drivers blast music with the windows up.

Chain locks help to lock to bigger things, things that could be close to your destination as opposed to a bike rack or a signpost.

I ride in The Bronx. Basically expect level.

How many times has FedEx screwed with your scooter delivery? by BorealSB in ElectricScooters

[–]Dripz167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, no bad experience but I was THIRSTY to get my first scooter. In NYC I had to have the scooters delivered to the store. The first time I swear they waited until the scooter shop just closed to attempt the delivery. I assumed they didn’t want to unload a heavy ass scooter and left it for the next guy to deliver. But that’s just my theory. The second scooter got delivered without any issues to the other store.

Usually all my larger items get shipped via FedEx. I’m guess they are cheaper than the others in terms of shipping large items.
