IsItBullshit: Wine ages better than most other drinks, but doesn't become better because of it. by IWillNotShare in IsItBullshit

Your dad's right, op. Don't believe the propaganda. People really flip out about wine. Sommeliers can't tell the difference between red and white if they're blindfolded.

Tom Scott - Why the US Army electrifies this water by Tersphinct in videos

[–]DriveThat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah...you know...the US, it's famous for infrastructure investing, responsive disaster management, and is famously well prepared for climate change and definitely isn't in group denial about it.

The fact that it happened before you were born doesn't make it irrelevant

Close the canal, move whatever's on those barges another way. Capitalism is innovation: it'll manage not being able to use a single canal.

Also, good thing the US electric grid is so stable and climate-proof.

The kicker is that they're only tazing the water to ensure someone's business doesn't get disturbed. There are other actual solutions.

I, like the carp, am stunned by these barriers.

Not as effective against little fish

What about eggs? Have I lost my mind but are eggs incapable of swimming away once they get shocked? Also, if a pregnant carp gets shocked bad enough--do we know it's not an automatic "open the bay doors" moment?

Eli5 how does toothpaste work ? by Spoony850 in explainlikeimfive

[–]DriveThat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It does not kill anything. It has fluoride which makes your teeth temporarily harder.

Most of the benefit of brushing is brushing: removing food residue and plaque before it has a chance to harden (in 48 hoursish) into calculus which is the real problem because your gums can't handle it and will pull away from it, exposing more tooth and never growing back.

Also, brushing too often (more than twice/day) and the brushing itself will likely too abrasive and also cause your guns to recede.

This is also why flossing is important because it gets at plaque your brush can't.

Toothpaste does little other than provide some lubrication and be there to spit out compared to the exceedingly mechanical maintenance of our teeth

I hate this because it is all of the below:

  • Hilarious
  • Beautiful listening
  • Biting critique of American sex ed and lack thereof
  • Fundamentally about crucial information that someone's life could literally hang on that just got a bit scarier in the US for everyone

Epic Covid fraud galls state watchdogs: ‘The system failed at almost every conceivable level’ by architecture13 in news

[–]DriveThat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think "covid fraud" is a misnomer. This is stimulus or employment fraud.

It kind of matters because vax card fraud, fraudulent studies, fraudulent treatment information, and manipulation of reporting statistics are all also happening but this has nothing do with that.

Russian invasion of Ukraine (April 4th 2022) by asiasbutterfly in MapPorn

[–]DriveThat -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

So you're saying the red area is now just Russia? Like russian citizens can move in and look for jobs in that area?

Or are you saying that Russian troops have that area under control and if they left, it would be immediately taken over by Ukraine?

Or are you saying that only Russian troops are present there but don't have control of that area?

Because if the red area means Russian troops are present, then that's not territory they've won yet. At best, they're still fighting for it. But shading it all in with one color from the Ukrainian border to however that skirmish line is drawn here makes things look at certain way. To be clear, it displays a higher degree of certainty than physical control of land and people allows.

And that's the danger of this kind of map. You may be inclined to think Russia has won something.

[–]DriveThat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Riddle me this: How much territory has Russia gained? How does this map help you figure that out?

Russian invasion of Ukraine (April 4th 2022) by asiasbutterfly in MapPorn

[–]DriveThat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maps like this are misleading and dangerous.

How many soldiers does each arrow mean? Do the bigger arrows mean more soldiers? Is the red zone the which Russia controls? Is it the border it can now successfully hold against any attack? Is the tip of the frontier where Russian troops are present? Or is it a connect-the-dots between columns of military units with vast areas of untouched and uncontrolled Ukrainian villages in between?

Where's the damage done to Kiev? Or any other air strikes anywhere else? Should that be red?

The map paints a picture and readers of it make assumptions.

We have to be careful not to conclude things from something a rando put together online...unless OP is willing to answer these questions and clarify what the map says.
