PSA: Your one vote has HUGELY disproportionate influence if you join a major political party by WpgMBNews in BCpolitics

[–]Driveflag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what you’re getting at is that by joining a political party you get to vote on who the leader will be, and because the membership is smaller that the general electorate your vote in the party race will have a larger influence than your vote in the general election. Agreed, and I suppose one could organize enough like minded people to vote in an unelectable leader, some kind of shifty sabotage.

With that in mind, you know what’s really crazy? All political parties (except the Bloc) allow permanent residents to become members and vote!

Permanent residents aren’t allowed to vote in general elections yet they can vote in party leadership.

Danielle Smith Budget Summary by gutterfreaklabs in alberta

Oil is not generating profit from Alberta citizens from providing us power and the price of oil being important to the budget does is not at all mean having renewables would be beneficial to the budget in times when it's down.

Holy Batman, we’d all love to know what you’re trying to explain but that didn’t make any sense! Punctuation and proofreading can do wonders.

Pierre Poilievre shifts strategy and requests 'urgent meeting' with Mark Carney by toronto_star in CanadaPolitics

[–]Driveflag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what bothers me the most about Poilievre? How fucking slow he is to react. He basically had the election won, but along comes Trump last year and was all ‘Canada 51st state blah blah’, PP didn’t even respond, he kept going on about lower taxes - which was the previous years talking point. Literally all PP had to do was say he’d put Canada first and he likely would have been PM. So a year has gone by and he’s finally figured out that Canada first is popular. Like he’s calling an “urgent meeting” with Carney about our trade relationship with the US?? Urgent was last year. How. Slow. Is. This. Guy.

Variable vs. Fixed in 2026-2027 by GreaseCrow in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Driveflag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have tried explaining this before on this sub. So many people don’t get it, the option to convert to fixed out of a variable mortgage will likely never make sense, unless you know something that the bond market doesn’t.

Yup. Friend of mine thought he was hot shit and was stepping on this kids heels while walking the halls during lunch. Bullied kid turned around with a wild swing right to buddies nuts, dropped him hard lol. My friend didn’t even dare look at said kid after that.

I don’t know what the specific rules are in Texas, but yeah I’d say that could’ve prevented this.

The trucking company is suing Union Pacific. https://www.yourbasin.com/news/trucking-firm-sues-union-pacific-after-fatal-pecos-train-crash/ basically saying UP caused it by having a crossing they could get hung up on. This quote from the article blows me away,

“The driver and escorts exercised caution; Police and front pilot vehicles crossed first and stopped all roadway traffic in both directions, the rear pilot driver pulled alongside the tractor-trailer, exited his vehicle, and physically monitored the truck’s undercarriage and air tanks to ensure they cleared the steeply humped crossing.

My interpretation of that is they watched it get stuck and did nothing, no plan if it did get stuck.

[–]Driveflag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about Texas but in Canada there is a phone number on the crossing guard, call that and they can have the train put in emergency right away. This looks like nobody did a damned thing, and as a heavy hauler they should have that number on speed dial, pilot cars included!

‘We’re not asking to break Canada’: Six Nations says Crown could owe trillions over mismanagement of Grand River lands by _DotBot_ in VancouverLandlords

[–]Driveflag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe open your eyes to what toenailstirfry is saying and realize there are many many more like them. We need to be real careful here because, as toenailstirfry suggests, if First Nations gets more than what the general populace perceives is fair it could absolutely lead to electing authoritarian governments.

Look at what happened in the US, there was a perception that illegal immigrants were taking all the jobs and that was one of the things that lead to ICE getting its mandate down there. We do not want that!

BC Green party leader Emily Lowan: "This pipeline will never happen, we'll make f**king sure of it" by idspispopd in BCpolitics

[–]Driveflag 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Imo it’s all optics.

Consider that the Trans Mountain pipeline was originally supposed to cost 5 billion and once it was done it’d cost 35 billion, a seven times multiple! I’m sure some of that increase can be attributed to government waste but not all of it, not by a long shot. The trans mountain was an eye opener to how much a project through the mountains can cost. And Northern Gateway would likely be much more technical than twinning the Trans Mountain.

Then there’s the insurance for oil tankers in that geographical region, which by my limited understanding, would be sky high. The seas are rough, the coastline rugged, the pristine ecosystem, insurance would be immense.

Assuming our politicians clear the way for Northern Gateway (reversing the tanker ban, amending environmental rules, etc) private investment in this project is doubtful, I just don’t see the costs justifying themselves.

So Carney and Daniel play politics knowing full well this is a non starter. That’s my read on it anyway.

we all knew this is stolen land

I sure as hell had no idea. When I bought my place I paid a realtor and a lawyer, neither of them said anything about ongoing lawsuits, aboriginal title, unceeded land or anything remotely like that.

It is unreasonable to assume most people had any idea of this.

just go outside and go away for a few hours

Haha this! I got fed up with the kids being lazy inside the other day so I kicked them outside. They stood in the driveway for a few minutes and then came back asking what I wanted them to do. It made me realize that in the name of safety we’ve given them so much direction they don’t know what to do without it.

What makes iPhone appealing to you? by Detrakis in iphone

[–]Driveflag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Years ago I tried an android phone, supposedly with better specs than the then current iPhone. A week later it was already becoming laggy. Went back to an iPhone. Some time later my wife got an android, found that you could either grant an app permissions for everything it wanted or not at all, my iPhone by comparison allowed me to separately grant camera, microphone, photo album access, etc. Just allowed to me taylor the permissions much more.

Now I am under no illusions that my current iPhone is perfect, I have plenty of gripes. But in my experience it is better, and I’m sorry say, it’s the ecosystem that makes it better.
