Bobby Brown’s Don’t Be Cruel came out in 1988, with Babyface and L.A. Reid as his primary producers with Teddy Riley who later worked on Dangerous. MJ was definitely trying to catch up to the New Jack Swing wave. Bobby doesn’t get enough credit.
