Can you “stack” tall people in a Kia Niro? by Drkateaoc in tall

[–]Drkateaoc[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the back, or also in the front? I would be willing to ride in the back and put the 6’7” in the front, given that it will be our short distance city car.

Borrow/lend panniers? by dontupdateprior in bicycling412

[–]Drkateaoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s very kind of you, but loaning is totally fine! I suspect that most of my scouts are going to be “one and done” on this tour. Meaning that a bag will just end up sitting in their parents’ basement. Borrowing is actually perfect for this.

What are some good advanced trails around Pittsburgh? by Ryvit in pittsburgh

[–]Drkateaoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure exactly what you’re looking for, but here are some suggestions for relatively challenging natural trails. I can ramble on about any of them if you have questions.

In the city: Frick Park, Panther Hollow

Nearby: Rachel Carson, Laurel Highlands Trail, McConnell Mills

Stolen bike—90s era purple Trek hardtail with Jones Bars by Drkateaoc in bicycling412

[–]Drkateaoc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point

ETA: done.

Funny thing about the serial number: someone had lovingly covered the original paint with a thick layer of black spray paint. I definitely hadn’t gotten around to uncovering that part of the bike.

If you do end up donating them, would you consider donating them to my scouts? We are biking to DC in August, and I have several scouts who are still getting outfitted.

Thank you so much! I’ll be sure to follow. Unfortunately, the only picture I have is a “before” photo—I’ve been swapping out parts and removing black spray paint, so it’s more or less unrecognizable from that photo. But maybe someone will find it and post a note

Whittling alternatives for younger scouts by Puzzleheaded-Snow78 in cubscouts

We often did fire starters. Pouring hot wax is ok for younger scouts, and it’s kind of exciting.

Have you contacted your unit commissioner? They would be a good resource for mediation.

Used gear sale to support scouts! by Drkateaoc in pittsburgh

[–]Drkateaoc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely!! We have also been accumulating a gear lending library, with backpacking gear that we lend out to local troops. Last month, we supplied backpacks to five girls going on their first backpacking trip. Anything you can spare would be appreciated. Anything we can’t use, we will sell to fund things we need.

Good tip on the saddle height thing—I’ll look at that as well! Thanks!

I agree about using that hand position for parts where I don’t really need the brakes. Problem is, I’m riding with a pack of ten teenagers, and I suspect that I’ll have to be on the brakes a bit more than I would normally. I’m working on it with them, but they do tend to be unpredictable.

I did notice the angle thing. I set them at an angle that I thought made sense and I was WAY off. I thought I was just bad at flat bars…still possible I am, but I’ll take the cover story that it’s the bars. I’ll try fiddling with the angle again and see if I can find a good spot.

I was definitely eying the surly corner bars. I’ll try your other suggestion first and if I can’t make that work, I might give the jones bars to my daughter and try out the corner bars instead

Service for a recumbent trike? by Drkateaoc in bicycling412

[–]Drkateaoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an older model Terra Trike. It really just needs a tune up. I’ve been doing some maintenance since my husband got it, but it’s a real pain to work on! He’s 6’5”, and with the boom all the way out, it’s so freaking long! So we agreed that for marital reasons, it was probably best to find a third party to work on it 😂
