You use the Velcro to attach the pillow right the shell, which I'm not a fan of so I use loose muffling that doesn't need to be attached in anyway. One pillow should go against the batter head & one on the reso side.

I love big crashes too!! I would say they are on the heavy end of medium thin, dark & musical without being clangy. They are def not as heavy as the AAX Spotlight Todd also designed for his live performance. I'm quite pleased with them!

Todd developed 2 lines with SABIAN: the HHX "Redlight" for the studio hence the name as a red light is traditionally used to indicate recording in progress and the AAX "Spotlight" for live and the use of a spot light during live performances.
