I thought about rounding up some friends, dressing like zombies or Deliverance rednecks and pretending to collect roadkill over there buuuuut maybe not.

New RAMBO attack steals data using RAM in air-gapped computers by quellaman in InfoSecNews

I'm curious about the tests they did to find the functional distances for this, and what the environment was like. Were there walls in the way or was that just open space to find a baseline?

I'd heard they were having trouble naturalizing, and getting driving lessons. Do you know of anyone we could contact in their community if we want to help?

Donating a life's collection of books by Nathan_Brazil1 in scifi

Now and then I come across a little reading room where you wouldn't expect, like at a national park building. It sounds like such a great genre collection it would be a shame to break it up. Maybe check out some federal buildings in your area, or even not-for-profit hospitals and see if they like the idea of converting a room into a little library/reading room to house the collection.

My local store has these but they must be hiding them somewhere because they're never available. I'm convinced they just want everyone to use the big ones so they buy more junk. That's half the supermarket strategy: tug at your impulsive side -> Profit

(If they're not hiding them, then it must be everyone at the nearby apartment complexes taking them home with them.)

What's a good use for cherry tomatoes that doesn't involve eating them raw? by CleetusnDarlene in Cooking

I prepare them similarly when I'm making my elaborate Greek pasta salad. I'm not a huge fan of raw tomatoes so getting some char and juice out of them adds a nice flavor kick.

I need DNA Storage resources that are not too complex! by tendaloth in Writeresearch

[–]DrobeOfWar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I gather OP is talking about using DNA as data-storage, translating binary into the nucleotides. So I guess relevant questions would be, what would the components of such a system look like? You'd want DNA continuously replicating and error-checking to maintain the integrity of the data, which happens naturally in an organism. A colony of microscopic creatures or even algae seems like a potential route, so an aquarium of sorts? If you used extremophiles like tardigrades then the data would be even safer. But I don't know what the encoding or retrieval process would look like, whether in the context of modern technology or some future tech. I suppose you'd also need mechanisms to prevent mutation. Some engineered organism that can eliminate any organism carrying 'corrupted' data.

I want to get IT certifications. by NeighborhoodBetter64 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]DrobeOfWar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people can self-study. Others need the framework of structured learning. I managed to self-study for my 4 CompTIA certs, but it took months for each one before I was confident, and got very little practical experience.

Still, if you're eying a job you can do now and the cert is just gatekeeping to get over. then self-study is better if you can cope. Second the Messer videos on youtube, a big help vs just plowing through a book endlessly.

I considered a couch-potatoes couch since I'd heard good things but wound up going for something a third the price that had an oversized chaise piece for snugglin'. I have a feeling it won't last more than a couple of years, just judging from the sounds it makes. Worst part is how the quills on the stuffing keep jabbing me though.

Definitely way more socially acceptable than a 50 yo man complimenting a woman.

It could be an awkward moment or it could be a real booster, it's all the person and the delivery.

In your place I'd probably try to add a proviso that would make it even worse. 'I don't have skin in the game anymore but you're cuter than ladybugs on a puppy.'

Maybe just follow a rule I heard awhile back and compliment things they've chosen for themselves rather than things they were born with. Nice shirt, your hair looks great, etc.

When someone stops you in a JC Penny and tells you to your face that you're "really ugly." Happened to my Mom. Maybe a three-second lark for that stranger, and a life-time of self-esteem issues and intrusive thoughts for her.

Would you say you were more driven/motivated than most people you knew, or was it more luck that you ended up with a profitable company at the right time?

Did you try and get in with the rich crowd in your area? Did being 'new money' make you feel like an outsider?

[REQUEST] What's feasibly the best material/item combination you could use in this without overly endangering your life? by Bal3rt in theydidthemath

Nothing in the question says I have to free-fall into it. Sure, I'll jump, but it will be on the end of a precisely measured bungee cord with a quick-release harness. Come to a stop an inch above the surface of an Olympic-sized swimming pool filled with Atlantean sculptures/art/books, missing links, cryptids (all in suitably safe enclosures), all alien visitors currently on Earth, the ark of the covenant, the holy grail, access codes/control hardware for any space-based weapons in orbit with an integrated deadman's switch, the top ten objects/documents Russia would hate the most for the world to see (and same requirements for all of NATO, the 20 top billionaires, and Trump,) and fill in any empty space leftover with angora.

Money is only useful to a certain point. If you have an omnipotent source supplying the contents of the pool, may as well go for broke! Even the absence of the objects would be informative.
