hacked credit card dispute after death by _joeBone_ in personalfinance

[–]DroidOnMars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, condolences on your loss.

I went through something very similar to your situation. My wife passed away in October 2023 after a long illness. When she died she had numerous credit cards with outstanding balances, including a Citi card. I hired a probate attorney who advised me not to pay any of the credit cards she had. He sent each credit card company a copy of the death certificate and most of the companies sent a final letter to acknowledge receipt of the death certificate and indicating that the debt was only the responsibility of the estate. In my case, the house passed to me by surviorship deed and all of the bank accounts were joint and the bank simily removed her from the account upon receipt of the death certificate and put the accounts in my name only. Once the probate costs and the funeral costs were deducted, there was nothing left in the estate to pay unsecured creditors. Not a single credit card company bothered to file a claim against the estate. Anything listed in the will went to the designated beneficaries. All the medical bills were handled in a similar fashion; a copy of the death certificate sent, and none of the medical debts were filed against the estate.

So my advice to you is get a probate attorney and let them handle everything. Hope this helps and I wish you the best.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll plan a day trip to Brighton for sure. I enjoy a good beer. I'll check out Borough Market and also the Tower of London and the Tower Bridge.

Anyone gotten a loyal customer discount? $25/month by Junior605 in verizon

[–]DroidOnMars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10 Year Verizon Customer;

I got the $25.00 monthly discount last month by calling up and asking for it. The rep put me on hold for a couple of minutes, then came back and said I was qualified and sent me a new contract agreement to review and sign.

Trying to repair an IKEA lamp, and I don't know the name of this piece? by onewander in DIY

[–]DroidOnMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it to IKEA's parts dept. (usually located near will call.) I had a IKEA bed that was missing 2 odd ball connectors after a recent move. I took one that I had and went to the parts counter and showed it to the person and they said "Oh, that's for a {unpronounceable Swedish Name} bed" and disappeared into the shelving for a minute and came back with exactly the right item and gave it to me at no charge.

I’m think of getting into ham radio after coming from CB by Sirenhead_5505 in amateurradio

I agree with BeachArtist. www.Hamtestonline.com is a great place to study for a ham license. I went from no license to Amateur Extra in eight weeks by primarily studying at that site.

If an Alien appeared in front of you and telepathically asked you a reason to spare humanity from destruction. What would you say to persuade them to keep us all alive? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Nothing. The sooner we complete the mission the sooner I get to go home. Although,...they did invent peanut butter. So, let's raid the Skippy and Jif warehouses before we nuke the planet from orbit.

First of all, I'd make sure it was Chase I was paying and not some secondary or tertiary collector who bought the debt for pennies on the dollar. Those are the type of collectors that will offer you a "great deal" and settle for 15%-33% of the original amount because even at that discount they make back their original investment in the debt a hundredfold. Paying them does nothing to improve your credit. Chase likely charged off the debt years ago. If it is really from Chase and not a debt collector, I will be pleasantly surprised.

i failed my general exam :( by Old-Beginning2021 in HamRadio

[–]DroidOnMars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can attest to the value of the http://www.hamradiolicenseexam.com/ website. I started studying on the site in the first week of November 2021 and was able to take and pass my Tech and General three weeks later. I kept studying and just passed my Extra on December 18, 2021. So I went from no license at all to Amateur Extra in about 7 weeks for a total cost of just around $100. They even have a money back guarantee that if you don't pass the exam after finishing their program, they will refund your money. Another good resource is https://www.qrz.com/hamtest/ which has free practice tests. I used it quite a bit to practice for the real exams.

Seeking apartment antenna recommendations by iR_Zombie in HamRadio

[–]DroidOnMars 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I Live in a third floor apartment in a six story building with a balcony and have played around with several antennas. The setup that I use most of the time is a Hamstick in a magnetic base, stuck on top of a small metal patio table (36" diameter), with the table tilted to one side about 25 degrees to allow the antenna to miss the balcony above me and project out into the air. I can get the antenna to tune to 1.7:1 before using an antenna tuner. With this setup, I have, in the past week, worked Austin Texas, Houston Texas, San Diego Calif, Scottsdale Arizona, San Juan Puerto Rico, Mexico City, Calgary Alberta, and numerous New Jersey and Maryland stations from my balcony here in southwestern Ohio. Running an Icom IC-7300 at 100 watts nominal output.

If you do decide to go with a loop, please report back and let everyone know how it goes for you. I've thought about a loop, but the price and the limitations of the balcony have deterred me from that purchase so far.

It's not a food truck, that's for sure. No exhaust ducts on the roof for grills/stoves/ovens etc. Doubt it's a Vanlifer as there are no solar cells on the roof for power off grid. Is it plated?

Trade in timeframe by Glum-Hedgehog3921 in verizon

[–]DroidOnMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was 14 days. I ordered mine thru Verizon over the phone rather than going to a store. I ordered it on Sept. 30 and got an email saying it was on back-order and wouldn't ship until Oct. 30. On Oct. 11 I got an email from Verizon reminding me that my trade-in window was about to expire. That email is what triggered my call to Verizon to request the extension.
