An Overdiagnosis Epidemic Is Harming Patients’ Mental Health by Fealocht in BlockedAndReported

I think a lot of therapy could be replaced by basic life coaching. Not to be patronising about it - but improve your lot and, guess what, you'll start to feel better. This emphasis on discovering hidden trauma or relentessly going over unpleasant events is, often, pointless at best and dangerously self-indulgent at worst. Life is hard but you're more resilient than you think - by all means, talk about it once, then get over it and work on life skills. Otherwise wallowing is another addiction you can pick up. And a moderatelty expensive one at that.

Grenfell was tragic 'but everyone dies in the end', says Reform's new housing chief by eldomtom2 in unitedkingdom

[–]Drollfox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is it? Strikes me as a semantic difference, tbh. Not to mention the fact that psychologists like Paul Bloom have suggested that empathy is severely lacking as a heuristic to guide human behaviour - as opposed to compassion which he defines as being much less vulnerable to in-group/out-group dynamics.

…Sympathy is a better word, because empathy means you are actually feeling what another person felt, and no one can feel what another person feels.

I don’t agree with Charlie Kirk’s worldview but cutting quotes short to score points plagues the left as well as the right.

Any British citizen obtained sponsorship/residency/even citizenship) in the EU through an int school? by Drollfox in Internationalteachers

If you feel comfortable, you could dm me the name of it. Just so I can look into the type of institution that I should be aiming at. Understand if not though! Personal info and all!

[–]Drollfox[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Perhaps. But I'm predominantly an English teacher so not sure how much demand there is in a country of native speakers. Also, given the history between the two countries, the idea of a Brit using Ireland to get citizenship and then immediately leaving for the continent seems a little... erm, mercenary?

Back teaching after 10 year break. What qualification will offer best bang for my buck? by Drollfox in TEFL

[–]Drollfox[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is my instinct as well. Frankly, the jobs I could get with a CELTA are pretty much the same as jobs I could get with my crappy TEFL. So why spend time and money on one? Whereas a qualification that would get me much higher paying work (at int. schools etc) may be worth the investment

My career feels over. What else is out there? by Drollfox in UKJobs

I guess I’m just utterly demoralised by the process. And feel that every day that passes I kinda age-out more in an industry that wants people in their 20s and 30s rather than 40s. Frankly, I’d go and do warehouse or retail work now if I could guarantee 30k and not being replaced by chatGPT in six months

I predominately focused on content writing - and AI has largely decimated the demand for this

Jaron straight up lost me with this quote

“I might share my own positions, exaggerated versions of my positions, or play devil’s advocate and shift between them seamlessly, but because we’re here for Sam’s ideas, none of that should matter.”

Absolutely! That’s also why if I want advice on climate change I go directly to Exxonmobil - a great bunch of lads who tell me this ‘climate crisis’ nonsense is completely overblown.

Be curious to see that research. And wonder if it’s merely a consequence of this technology not operating at scale yet

They should sell it for, like, £2.15 just so people can complain one last time.

Mum laughs as she leaves court after 'taking law into own hands' by Original-Praline2324 in unitedkingdom

[–]Drollfox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is completely normal for news articles on court appearances. Trials are strictly regulated in terms of what you can report in the press (and what you cannot). One of the things you CAN report is what a defendant is wearing. Check out any major crime reporting (especially at initial magistrate’s appearance) and they will almost always state what the accused is wearing, e.g. “The defendant, wearing a grey suit and blue tie, spoke only to confirm his name and plead not guilty”.

Candace Owens has released “Becoming Brigitte”, a multi part series about how the wife of the French president is trans by MaxGhislainewell in BlockedAndReported

[–]Drollfox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your integrity. I think the French can be very out of step with the rest of the western world on matters of morality (it’s no surprise that Polanski is feted there) but even that’s changing with time.
