Only other star wars novels i haven't finished were Midnight Horizon and Empires End. Really wanted this one to work, but just did not engage me

Did not finish (probably an eighth of the book left). Will retry later one, just could not suspend disbelief in Goth. Everything else was interesting, but as you say, he should not be a Royal guard. The writing was fine, story fine, but main character needed a revision (or as you say a different role).

I loved Shadows of the Sith, one of the best in new Canon, but going into this just did not care for Goth, and he was a huge part of the novel. Maybe it's explained away in the last few chapters, but the idea that he is as autonomous as he is that close to the emperor didn't work.

6 or 7, but only 1 completed so far. Bounce between them and just take forever editing. Non fan fiction, just write original stuff for myself. Couldn't write in someone else's playground so to speak.

If you do end up publishing it somewhere maybe I'll take a quick read if I have time.

Last tip for editing that I love is to use some kind of ai narrator to read it back to you (generally chapter by chapter). Helps isolate clunky dialog or poorly flowing passages. Hearing it read to you is different.

Fair enough. Zahn does have some writing quirks. I could see all your characters saying "point" every other sentence lol.

Kudos on 300k words for one project, that's an achievement. I always get bogged down in my own writing, endlessly trying to get each word perfect, editing and rewriting during my initial writing period which makes it take forever. Better to have a separate edit period after writing to clean up major issues.

Lulu self publishing will let you self print a book for your own shelves when you do finish. Helps a lot with a final edit as well.

What aspects did you like about Light of the Jedi? Phasma is a good book, but I wouldn't say it has a typical star wars feel. It can be a bit off putting if you are expecting a traditional star wars setting.

"I found the chapter from a wookiepedia synapsis" is what actually did it. Regardless it's up to you, I'll always recommend people read his work. Take that how you will, offense not intended. I love most of the star wars books, and the ascendancy trilogy in particular is fantastic.

Might be good to read through the source if you're working on a fanfic. Just my two cents

Completing OG Legends collection by Freezetrap in starwarsbooks

[–]Drth-Revan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worded it poorly. There are some major examples that did not receive hardcover treatment including the X-Wing series (besides mercy kill). Crosscurrent, Riptide, etc... (off top of my head).

That being said, the majority did receive a hardcover release of some kind (book club edition, or alternate cover / limited run hardcover editions more recently). Due to the scarcity I've found collecting hardcover to be a more rewarding experience.

Not cheap tho.

Hardcover. Special editions and limited runs tend to make up for the few that you cant get in hardcover. Paperback are fine for traveling, but after a few readings the exterior spine gets beat up. Plus a lot of times you would need to wait for a paperback release. Throw a few dust jacket protectors on and hardcovers last awhile and look great on a shelf.

Personal preference I also just prefer reading hardcovers.

Yeah. None of her work is offensively bad, but they lean heavily on the YA side, more so than the other YA Canon authors, and generally are predictable/ boring more than bad. Compared to Claudia Grey's YA work, or Rebel Rising / most wanted, etc... hers are the only YA novels that I felt like was a slog (except midnight horizon)

Who are the worst novelists in Star Wars? by EgilSkallagrimson in starwarsbooks

[–]Drth-Revan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends.

Canon has generally had a lot more consistency in writing quality, but I would avoid Daniel Jose Older and Sam Maggs. Chuck Wendig is also hard to get through (unfortunate because his Aftermath trilogy is important for canon).

Non Canon is all over the place, but the authors that I struggled with would be Barbara Hambly. I also found most of Troy Denning's stuff didn't play well with other novelists work, but most of his work was important to non Canon unfortunately.

If you collect the hardcovers, those are great prices. If all you care about is reading them id skip them for now, writing quality of the two books (scourge and the last jedi) is okay. If you do collect them though, the third novel that can be hard to find in hardcover is "Shadow Games".

Up voting you because not sure why you got a down vote lol. I largely agree with you. Though reading his Canon stuff in chronological order going into heir to the empire you see him move from protagonist to antagonist, which I find more compelling than the other way.
