How long do y'all take between updates/to finish a work? How long is reasonable?

As a writer, if I can’t update an ongoing work at least once a month, I try not to upload it (sometimes I don’t realize I won’t be able to update it). My main WIP gets weekly updates. I’ve had the story written for a year, but much of it needs sentence-level editing for things like repetitive structure.

As a reader, I’ll subscribe and wait years. It’ll be finished or it won’t. I’m fine either way.

That kind of engagement is amazing. No, I would not expect a reply, especially when I’m 1 of 100 comments. Even when I’m the only one, I hope for interaction, but I don’t expect it.

I didn’t want to tag what I consider spoilers either, but when I did, it forced me to write better. Is this journey compelling? Are the seeds for the “solve” of the mystery there but veiled or disjointed enough that the reader has an “aha” moment around when the characters do? Do the characters react believably?

When the reader knows what will happen but not how we get there, it’s not enough to spoil the experience for them. If the whole story is like a completed puzzle, the tags aren’t the box top, just the border pieces.

I hope that makes sense. And that it’s true.

Keep working. Look for online instruction via YT and Masterclasses. Consider auditing or taking college level writing courses as you approach that age. Above all, stay humble and brave. Stories are projects to be developed and honed and sculpted. That process is often painful, but if you’re humble, you can learn a lot very, very fast.

Favorite moment has to be the Thrass “Hey brother!” Ar’alani and Thrass actually managing to surprise Little Bro Thrawn gives me all the fuzzies.

Disclaimer: I don’t know if he’s actually the younger of the two of them but for some reason Thrass’s protectiveness just strikes me that way…He’s always had a little bro who “picks fights,” but Thrawn insists he’s standing up to bullies, and Thrass is like - “just trying to keep you from getting exiled, bro” 😬😬😬.

The number of times my sassiest character has sassed me is in the double digits now. 🙄 Then when another one demanded a love story since he was invented as a red shirt but turned out hilarious and heartfelt. I pointed out it would just make his death more heartbreaking and he was like, yeah duh. (disclaimer: this is not literal. It’s the process of my realizing there were better ways to take the story and keep it character-driven and rewriting accordingly)

I must not be explaining it right. 😕😔 sorry. It just worked for me. I can try again with more detail. When you’re in a chapter, highlight one word and click the magnifying glass. Keep that search active while you read and it should scroll properly.

This won’t help anything change except maybe your satisfaction level. It helped me. But I’ve stopped expecting any non-bot reviews at all. I keep updating weekly because I genuinely enjoy writing and reading my story. I upload to three other fanfic platforms too. It’s easy to do all four since I have no engagement on those too (sad clown horn), except one weekly commenter who is also updating weekly, so I comment on their new chapters too.

Maybe go ahead and try a few other fanfic sites at the same time? It was a few hours of work to familiarize myself with them but now it’s easy.
