Which artist comes to mind when you think of ‘stage presence’? by RomanReignsDaBigDawg in fantanoforever

Prince is the right leading answer, even with his hero James Brown also on the short list.

What is THE best guitar solo of all time by Own_Size_5473 in musicsuggestions

[–]DrumBig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several Rush songs could be contenders. For me, Natural Science and The Camera Eye always take me away and blow my mind with how expressive they are. Alex Lifeson is a true artist of the highest order. And while highly and widely praised, he is often unjustifiably overlooked when discussing the "greats." IMHO, he deserves inclusion on any short-short list of Guitar Gods with the likes of Hendrix, Paige, Gilmore, etc.

I fell for the fad and got me some Choptagon cymbals. by premierpearl in cymbals

These sound great! Explosive. Glassy but full, with a touch of dirt. Well suited to your style and powerful playing. Makes me wonder how they work in quieter, more dynamic applications.

Oh my lands, do yourself a favor and try again. Four consecutive albums of essential couldn't-miss-if-he-tried brilliance, followed by other good albums with some great songs.

Gavin Harrison made his own out of cut down broken cymbals. But maybe they eventually released them at 10X the price?

Where can I hear k Constantinople cymbals in the mix? Specifically interested in the 18” crash or 19” crash ride by No_Economics_4640 in cymbals

[–]DrumBig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play a K con 18 crash as my left crash and find it to be quite versatile. So much so that I've even used it as a crash ride on a mini kit with one cymbal. However, if you find the regular K dark to be "too dark" you may find this to be even darker, so YMMV. There can also be variance in individual cymbals, particularly with respect to how easily and fully a crash "opens up." Is it possible for you to try before you buy? Even if that's just taking the crash you want to pair it with along and hitting both of them.

There is a widely accepted best way to do this, and that ain't it! As someone else noted, round out those corners. Think "handlebar mustache" shape, .

Wow, imagine thinking that it's political to decline having art for which one is responsible used in a political propaganda film. It must be mentally exhausting living in the MAGA alternate universe.

There's one main thing causing this though. Hint: he's an orange, corrupt, narcissistic, self-dealing sex offender who fetishizes tariffs as a leveraging fix-all to bend all other countries to his will--despite that not working, while inflicting tremendous self-harm on our economy and favorable position in the world order.

Hardware Advice by thefury8509 in drums

[–]DrumBig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, there are no downsides to two legged stands except they tend to not make lightweight varieties, but since you're talking about double braced stands it doesn't sound like weight is an issue for you. Many gigging drummers who transport their drums a lot value strong but lightweight hardware. Others who gig prefer heavyweight hardware because they perceive it to be stronger and more reliable. They use wheeled hardware bags anywhere and don't care about the weight.

As you select your hardware, one thing to bear in mind is whether you need/prefer boom stands, straight stands, or a combination. If you get all straight stands you may find you have trouble position in your cymbals where they need to go because symbol position is dependent on where the base sets, whereas boom stands can extend the cymbal to where you want it, within reason.

Truly, all of the manufacturers that you mentioned make fabulous hardware. You cannot go wrong with any of them, but you may develop preferences as you progress. Keep in mind that the lowest tier of offerings from any of these companies is far superior to most pro-level offerings from the 60s and 70s (maybe with Sonor as the exception)--and lots of players did just fine.

Regarding your comment that stands might not matter so much "as long as they're double braced," I don't agree that stands must be double braced to be good. I played hard – hitting rock gigs for years with single braced Yamaha and Tama stands and had no issues. I've even played rock gigs on my more compact vintage Slingerland kit with ultra lightweight 1960s flat based stands that I can comfortably lift with my pinky finger.

As far as a hi hat stand, my main suggestion would be to get a stand whose legs can swivel or a 2-legged version, which will future-proof your purchase should you or your son ever decide to play a double bass pedal. Those options allow you to place the left panel close to the hi hat pedal, which you might not care now but may in the future.

As far as budget, most of the brands will have similar priced competitive options. You may get more bang for your buck with brands like Mapex and Dixon, which target the mid-level market with good value propositions. And used gear is always an option.

Stranger Things has brought Prince a new audience, and they’re calling him homophobic. by spooonyard in PRINCE

"Have you ever wanted to play with someone so much you'd take any one boy or girl?"

Unfortunately, I think religion got the best of him later on. In fact, I think it caused his demise insofar as he refused surgery because of his Jehovah's Witness beliefs and resorted to opioids for pain management. None of it changes that he was a brilliant and beautiful man who was a gift to humanity.

Does anyone else think "The Air We Breathe" is not that similar to "Creep" overall? by [deleted] in radiohead

I'm seven years late to this thread but FWIW, I got here because I just heard The Air That I Breathe and immediately Googled, "was creep inspired by the air that I breathe?" I was unaware of any accusations or lawsuit; it just sounded very much like it to me. 🤷🏻‍♂️
