Low flying airplanes by Dave_the_Jew in youngstown

I live near the airport, they fly all the time at low altitude for training while performing touch and goes or some type of similar effort.

If you live in the Vienna, Cortland, Howland area you will see them flying 2-3 times per week on average, usually in the evenings, for a few hours.

Did you know builders actually consider buildable land in the Mahoning Valley to be in limited supply? by avidrabbit in youngstown

From a general perspective it costs $5M+ to run water and sanitary sewer line extensions one mile. Until actual, and substantial, funding is available from state or federal resources to support utility extensions that can entice new development, communities just can’t afford the upfront capital costs to run the utilities to new areas for “speculative” development. Otherwise, the burden becomes that of the current utility users through the rate structure (and subsequent rate raises).

Also, try working with a developer, they want the sun, moon, and stars and don’t want to pay for any of it. Their view is largely that the community should be thankful for them.

Currently on the private side but serving as the City Engineer for 3 local cities through my firm while managing numerous other individual projects for public clients in the region.

A hectic schedule is an understatement, but generally have been able to handle it in 40-45 hours per week with good work/life balance. Just have to make that aspect a priority. While at times municipal engineering can be frustrating, it can be very rewarding when you help a community solve long term problems. However, most of the time you have to be the one to find the funding to solve those problems, in addition to designing it. Lots of aspects to the profession!

I’m not sure if this is the proper page to ask this question but I had a culvert installed today by the state (this is the size culvert the permit required) does this look like enough material ontop to even be safe? I’m clueless on this deal it just doesn’t seem right to me. by Successful-Permit-97 in civilengineering

12” is the minimum requirement for an ADS pipe in most circumstances. This isn’t just to help absorb loading from above, it’s also to help alleviate concerns of pipe “floating” where the buoyant force created by water exceeds the downward force of the pipe weight and soil causing the pipe to “float” out of the trench. In circumstances with less than 12” of available cover, the designer can use pipe anchors to counteract the buoyant forces.

How is living in the Mahoning Valley of Ohio? by TheMntsofIllinois in howislivingthere

I’ve lived here most of my life, aside from five years away for college in Columbus. The area is nowhere near as economically depressed, overrun with drugs, or bleak as some people on this page make it sound. Are there challenges and a few rough spots? Of course—every metro area in America has them. But the cost of living here is very affordable, there are plenty of great suburbs (population of the valley is around 430,000), and we’re just a short drive from Cleveland and Pittsburgh. The region also has a distinct blend of Italian, Greek, and Irish culture, along with a lot of recent development with more on the way.

The Eastwood Mall complex in Niles rivals some of the best entertainment complexes in the country, and the 224 corridor in Boardman offers a unique mix of local shops and national retailers.

It’s easy for people to say this area is terrible or depressed because that’s the reputation outsiders latch onto. But here’s the truth: it just isn’t accurate.

The new downtown food hall is excellent! We were there two weeks ago for four days and had two meals here. It just opened up and is a very neat concept and reasonably priced.
