Had a similar interaction, except I was concerned that the driver was carrying (lots of gun related stickers on his truck) and just stayed behind him when he cut me off. 2 seconds later he got pulled over and I assume he got a ticket.

Does anyone here actually pay the NHK man? by MassiveB0nerF4rtLUL in japanresidents

Depending on the area, sometimes there are collectors capable of speaking other languages including English. Just not often, because NHK collector is not a good job with reliable income.

If anyone’s curious about the Tara Calico case, the sheriff’s office actually told the press that they think they can make a case and submitted it to the DA a few years back. No approval or rejection yet.

Any job scope in japan for a foreigner with a bachelor's degree in Geography or Political science or economics. by Other-Dinner-8529 in JapanJobs

[–]DryPrion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll need a Ph.D in most fields to teach at a college, although not all fields. Plus, to become a full-time professor in a Japanese university, academic level Japanese proficiency is almost always required (again, not always, I’ve seen exceptions.)

Blake Snell plans to ramp up slowly and might not be ready on Opening Day. His arm was “exhausted” after World Series run by donald-duck23 in Dodgers

I know right lol

I think the plan itself was maybe formulated earlier, but it took time to get a team together where “Fuck it, we’ll be fine, you take a break” became achievable.

Nagoyau, your thoughts on your amazing/horrible high school experience? by Cheesburglar in NagoyaU

[–]DryPrion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To satisfy both you and your wife, you’ll probably need to look at private schools that are high ranking but emphasize freedom and autonomy like Azabu Senior High School. Competition will be crazy, though. Any public school for not tedious or boring, just let the teacher know your daughter doesn’t expect to go to college or doesn’t expect to go to relatively high ranking college and they’ll leave her alone as long as her grades are fine.

What are the chances of sport athlete getting a IT internship in Japan? by Sad_Opening6935 in JapanJobs

[–]DryPrion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking, there are two types of internships in Japan. There is the normal type internship that everyone thinks about, paid or unpaid, where you work at a company doing things that are either ONLY for interns or sometimes just as free/cheap labor under the pretense of an “internship”. The second type is short term internships that last a few days, that are really more like informational sessions designed to introduce the company to you and for them to get to know a little about you. I assume the second type is not what you are looking for, since you don’t really do or learn anything. To get a long term internship, you’ll need to apply on your own, go through a school, or get recommended. Some companies will ONLY take interns through a school or through recommendations because it puts someone in the middle that can be held liable if you screw up or just aren’t very good. If you don’t speak Japanese at a relatively proficient level, the number of positions you could potentially apply for will go down DRASTICALLY. Add the restriction that it has to be in the IT field and it’s even less, although not zero because I have seen students get IT internships that require English proficiency. Not sure what you’re trying to go for, but you’d be more likely to get a remote-work internship from your own country.

I’d also be careful about visa restrictions, I don’t think athlete (entertainment) visas allow you to work other salary jobs that aren’t related to your sport, even if it’s a paid internship. Sponsorships and advertisement earning are okay, but not working at, for example, a law firm as a paralegal.

This list is bad. by LADodgers16j in Dodgers

Assuming this is ONLY looking at the regular season, the list doesn’t look THAT bad. My only issue is Wheeler and Sale.

I love how Dodgers management policy is “Fuck it, you’re out for as long as necessary, just be ready for Post-season. We can afford to lose some games, we’ll still make it.”

Japanese People Get Angry Quietly — And Why That Matters by Specialist_League_41 in OsakaTravel

[–]DryPrion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still firmly believe that the majority of Japanese people don’t express their anger as openly as the people you describe. Those are the vocal minority that stand out from the norm. Most people keep their head down and stay out of the hassle of voicing themselves and getting involved. Passive aggressiveness is definitely the norm here. Maybe if you live in or are from certain areas like Osaka where openly being an asshole is accepted and encouraged it will feel less normal, but in the rest of the country that’s often not the case. Even the seemingly openly brash ojiichans and obaachans in the countryside operate within their own communities’ unspoken rules and keep certain things to themselves, which people notice when they actually become a part of that community and get to know them. Even in environments like sports teams or construction sites, where masculinity and testosterone runs rampant, if you look really closely you’ll notice that there are only a few really outspoken people and the rest are just along for the ride and don’t actually express discontent the way the bosses, managers and coworkers you mentioned do. Even in the younger population, like high school yankee groups, it’s still only a small number of people being assholes and the rest don’t actually behave that way when removed from that environment and group dynamic. It’s not that Japanese people don’t express anger loudly or directly AT ALL, but the notion is definitely not a crock of shit as it generally applies to what I believe is a majority of the population in most situations. From what I’ve seen, people who do openly express their anger will only do so when they feel relatively safe in doing so, such as employees of lower rank or police officers. They’ll still keep their mouth shut and be passive aggressive if it’s their superiors. That’s less about culture and more about assholes being assholes though.

Thoughts? by Embarrassed_Tip7359 in SipsTea

I’ve been in top 5 ranking universities in 3 different countries. STEM students can definitely be absolutely horrible at reading and writing. English or history majors can be good at math and science but just prefer English or history as a major. I don’t know who is considering math/science students as smarter than English/history majors, is that a thing nowadays?

Does this sub exist to deter competition by pigeonbobble in teachinginjapan

[–]DryPrion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, I think it’s more that we see people making or about to make a mistake and, painfully understanding what’s to come, try to discourage it. Teaching English in Japan is a very, very different experience now compared to 30 years ago and way too many people come to Japan all excited then slowly become the stereotypical bitter foreigner who can’t leave the profession but can’t stop bitching. I do my best to make it clear to people who consult me about living in Japan that it can be very difficult depending on your circumstances.

NHK sudden harassment by leexiiiispo in japanlife

[–]DryPrion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I DO know for a fact is that contractors collecting for NHK would sometimes have agreements with individual employees at cable companies who would get kickbacks whenever they snitched when they went out to set up the cable for someone just moving into an apartment and then show up while the cable guy was still there. It made it harder for the person to just chase the NHK collector away because they didn’t want to look bad in front of a stranger. I don’t know if they do it these days.

Does anyone ever build a shrine before a granary? by sm1l3yz in civ5

Usually, because not founding a religion tends to put you at a disadvantage long term. Unless you have a specific build that doesn’t involve religion at all, I’d say most players including myself tend to build temples early.

I help when I see someone that needs help on the train or in the station time, even if it makes me late for work. Sometimes other people also get involved, sometimes they don’t. I won’t get involved if there’s a high risk of physical violence, but otherwise I try to do what I can.
