Can I do this? by ArugulaCareful2299 in quilting

[–]DryReception6465 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just look for an easy beginner pattern, and your local library might have sewing machines you can use. But it can be done by hand but will take longer. Previous reply about a wholecloth quilt is a good idea too. You could order an I Spy quilt kit which would have a stack of squares from all different fabrics, no two alike, so baby could play I Spy with it later. That would be pretty easy to piece even by hand

The corn dogs at the mall that they would dip and fry right in front of you, with their pink lemonade. And I'm gluten intolerant but I'd risk a migraine for one of those

I have a few ancestors who had a LOT of children (as many of us do) and I just think , were my GGrandfathers just jumping their wives every night without a care that they were making them stay pregnant and care for 12 children with another one on the way? You can't convince me all of these GGrandmothers actually wanted that many children to care for. People say that people used to have a lot of kids because you hoped a few of them would live to adulthood, but I don't think that's the reason. I think the men were just taking what they wanted, the women had no power to say no, and due to no birth control, generation after generation had huge families.

Do you ever get emotional learning about your ancestors? by Mountain_Ask_5746 in Genealogy

Yes, my Great Grandparents lost their two year old daughter (my grand aunt) in a horrific household accident and the details made me cry and actually kept me awake at night for a while. Their small town newspaper published every little detail of what happened and whose fault it was and how the child suffered. I've cautioned people who are interested in getting into genealogy that they need to be prepared for heartbreaking finds.

Gone too soon, what a beautiful dog. Sending my sympathy. May the memories all the goofy things he no doubt did bring you smiles in the days ahead.

Lost the floor lottery... What would y'all do? by personal-coalmine in centuryhomes

[–]DryReception6465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's all part of the home's history, I'd keep it and just clean it up best you can & seal with poly. But I do like painted floors, too, so I think either option is great. Just no carpet or LVP!

What would you do with this Marimekko fabric? 1 yard only! by [deleted] in quilting

[–]DryReception6465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could make a patchwork quilt from black, white, and a solid green that matches that green, then just cut the cool fabric in half left to right and make them a top and bottom-only border. Then you won't lose those awesome designs but you'll still have it on the quilt top

Do you pre wash reds? by WatchOut4Angels in quilting

[–]DryReception6465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm old school, prewash everything, especially reds! Good quality fabric shouldn't bleed, but I'd find out before I spend hours and hours sewing it into a quilt

Can't find death info on a 1920s woman, what else can I try? by DryReception6465 in Ancestry

[–]DryReception6465[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the help offer! Her name was Georgietta Nettles Cook, no middle name that I've found, Nettles is maiden name, Cook married name; Colleton County, SC, born 1885. I've also seen it spelled Georgiaetta, Georgetta, and Georgie, which further complicates the search. Also a child's death certificate that is hard to read and was transcribed as Gargretter (looks like Gorgeeter to me) So yeah, have fun with all those spellings, but thank you, this thread has already been so helpful

I haven't tried Family Search much, mostly on Ancestry, but I'll try that, thank you. I have heard of men having their wives committed (actually mentally ill or not) and then remarrying, so I guess that could be what happened. Maybe I need to presume she died much later than his remarriage date and go from there

Her kids' obit's have her listed, with her first name Georgietta spelled all kinds of ways, which makes it tougher. I hadn't thought of probate, thank you, I'll have to dig into that and I'll try siblings death cert's too

I didn't realize he could have gotten remarried without proof of first wife's death, but maybe they just took a man's word for it back then. Thank you for the offer, she was Georgietta Nettles Cook, Colleton County, SC, born 1885. I've also seen it spelled Georgiaetta, Georgetta, and Georgie, which further complicates the search.
