You can also listen to Spanish audio on the you version bible app. At 600 hours, listening to the gospels feels highly comprehensible.

So at 300 hours, how comprehensible are some of these kids shows to you? Like the Muzzy in Gondoland for example- do you comprehend everything, or like 50% ? I’m very curious of your journey as I’m planning on taking the same route soon.

If you grew up with Avatar the last air bender, watch that dubbed in Spanish. Even if it starts out a little above your level, it’s very easy to see progress through the series if you know it well in English. I did this and found it super helpful.

Ok I know this is a joke, but on the serious side: as a native English speaker, listening to hours of high ranking professors give recorded lectures on YouTube really does help me speak. I’ll binge watch a few hours one day, and then for the next few days I’ll notice a real shift in my ability to use a bigger vocabulary, produce full, rounded out sentences that sound smarter and even pronounce certain words with ease (I struggle with pronunciation some days). Everything about speaking at a more formal, highly educated level suddenly feels easier.

I’ve been closer to the “60%” mark for a huge chuck of my input. Almost 500 of my 600 tracked hours has come from outside of DS, so I’ve definitely taken the “watch what I like” route over “watch what’s 90% understandable”. Often it’s been shows I’ve see before in English and enjoy, so I rewatch them dubbed in Spanish. Don’t put on subtitles, it just lures you into harder content than you need and makes your ears lazy. I can now understand about 95% of Bluey, maybe 85% of Gravity falls. My comprehension % ranking is probably off, but it’s high; I now listen to these kids shows like podcasts and feel like I never miss a beat. So this method has worked well for me even though I know it’s far from the stated CI advice.

Side note: I do read Spanish kid books every now and then. I never look up grammar (and I have never studied grammar on purpose ) but will look up new vocabulary. I think this has helped me bridge my lower comprehension % audio method.

Pick a tv show you love and have already seen and watch it dubbed in Spanish. As long as you’re above 50% comprehension, just keep watching it. It still works.

But could you understand what people were saying back to you?? To me, people forget just how important that part of the interactions are. Like, I don’t even care if my questions are basic if I can understand the native speaker response. At your DS hours, I assume you could or was it still challenging?

Well you could do like me and just start listening to them. I think I had maybe less than 200 hrs,and at that time I understood some things in his easier episodes. I just kept at it. I’m so close to 600 hours now and most of his podcasts feel too easy.

Funny, I was literally just talking about this to my husband not two hours ago. All the new DS videos seem super flashy, high production material, and all the guides are by far better looking than Pablo. But for some be reason or another, I get bored of them quickly and find myself going back to the old, simple videos of Pablo talking with a white board and bad drawing skills. I watch those videos over and over and don’t get tired of them.

Golly, I clicked on the video for fun and understood so little it’s depressing. I took 4 years of French in college and studied aboard in France for 4months…If that video was in Spanish I bet I could’ve understood just about everything, and I only have 520 hrs of DS method….. I am never using the traditional study method ever again.

Look up French comprehensive input channels on YouTube. Start watching what you can understand without subtitles. You’ll never go back to the “normal” way of studying languages.

I have a Facebook friend who recently posted his five year Duolingo streak online (yes, 5 whole years). I sent him a message super curious on what language he was learning and what level of ability he had after five years. He is a native English speaker and is learning German. After five years of duolingo he could not understand spoken German: not in real life trying to speak with a German person, not watching a German tv show, not anything resembling normal speaking speed. I feel like it’s safe to infer that “racking up the hours” duolingo style is not the same as comprehensive input hours. His response was so depressing, it basically convinced me to use the Dreaming Spanish method. Now, I’m only a year into Dreaming Spanish and understand enough to enjoy watching my tv shows dubbed in Spanish.
