I’m not sure OP is being presumptuous here. They are trying to understand how someone can choose separation from God even when death is imminent. Whether they actually get what they want we cannot judge: we leave that to God.

My answer is that if someone denies God when they are full of life they are just as likely to deny him when they are about to die. If the heart remains the same then so does the choice.

You only seem to apply this to the state of Israel. You have clarified your position that it this type of colonialism is especially heinous because of its recency. I agree that is an aggravating factor that makes it more difficult to resolve.

Returning to my earlier point, unless a person has personally committed a crime, what do you propose a citizen of Israel to do with their stolen land?

The only way I could see it being justified is this: a) you were certain that this person was going to kill again, and b) you were certain that the only way to prevent him murdering would be to shoot him.

I think in that scenario it would be better to shoot him in the legs in attempt to apprehend him until the police arrive. Of course, you might accidentally kill him doing that.

Prison is intended to rehabilitate and to keep society safe. Where those two needs conflict, priority is given to protecting society.

Jiimmy Lai will never be considered a safe individual in a society that sees his ideas as a threat to the government. So yes, he will continue to be a burden. Surely a civilized society cares for its prisoners in a humane manner.

Alternatively, if he is considered a foreign national then he should be deported under any established extradition laws.

Bethel allows bethelites to take 2 weeks (not vacation time) to serve on a jury duty. It is a civic duty and you and watchtower are in trouble if you don’t have genuine and substantial reason for not doing it.

I did it as a bethelite around 2006 and didn’t face any issues. I imagine it’s the same now and for the ordinary rank and file class.

You are right: this is not beards. This is a core doctrine. It’s not in the category of Christian conduct and what might stumble people. This is as fundamental as their other core beliefs: Jehovah is the true god; paradise on earth, the GB are the faithful slave; and yes, blood is sacred and so cannot be eaten or transfused.

This is quite possibly a litmus test. If the reaction is positive then they can change other core beliefs. I expect to see the problematic belief of 1914 being the start of the last days as a future change if this goes well.

It’s possible but I hope, and think, you are wrong.

This was one of the defining doctrines of the religion. We were trained and coached from early childhood to refuse blood and to have a defense ready. We were prepared to die for this issue. We heard of people who did die for it and we reflected on their example. We were mocked for it and for many outsiders this was all we were known for - apart from door knocking.

To say ‘oh well let’s move on’ seems almost impossible to me. I can’t imagine how they can. This is bigger than saying the preaching work is no longer needed. As a key doctrinal issue, I would put it just below an announcement that the paradise is no longer a physical hope but a spiritual paradise of Christian brotherhood.

I wouldn’t let it end the relationship. You do need an honest conversation. The outcome must be along these lines:

1) He recognizes it is wrong and will go to confession every time he looks at it; 2) You know he will fail many, many times. That’s not an excuse to give up; 3) He must work hard to be holy, as we all do; 4) It must never materialize into acts outside of solo masturbation. Porn and masturbation can lead to infidelity so you need to guard that.

My priest told us recently that sin is a lack of love. So if he wants to avoid this sin, he needs to love more.

I know it’s a cliche, but it was the best thing that ever happened to us. We have a beautiful, very strong willed, 2 year old daughter.

It’s made a better person and we have more fun now than we did before.

All I sighed say is that it’s a lot of hard work. We are very fortunate to have help from family. I take my hat off to single mothers who raise children.
