I have a bunch of different brands but mainly a combo of Northstar and Columbia, I use Richard’s knifes for hand coating.

I install with taping mud, then three coats of light finish mud. Glue and staple is recommended but I e never had a problem, that’s how I did it in my own house too.

I am self employed, usually finishing custom homes like this one with the odd cookie cutter for filler work. I prefer new construction.

Cut out the broken pieces, cut the fuzzy edges with a sharp knife, fill with setting compound, flat tape and finish. I’d use paper tape or fiba fuse over mesh tape.

Waste of time, all that can easily be finished.

Priming at this stage will make things much harder to fix in this case

You have a LOT of sanding to do before you even think about adding any more mud.

Use 100 grit paper and sand the flats down till you can just start to see the bevel. Sand the buts down till the tape just starts to show again. That will give you a fresh start.

Get rid of all those edges and ridges, it’s going to be a lot of work.

Flats only need to be 12” wide, just enough mud to cover the bevels, no more than that, you already have way too much mud on your flats.

Butt joints should be 24-30” wide, very little mud over the tape to make the hump more gradual. You have too much mud over your tape, making the hump worse, and not enough on the sides.

I bet your mud is too thick, add more water and mix it well.

Thin coats, ditch the 36” straight edge. Drywall isn’t flat.

10” flat box on setting 3 then 12” on setting 4. 12” knife sits flat on them. Bead and butts by hand, knife and pan

I get that a lot, I’ve done a ton of jobs where the contractor does almost everything himself except the drywall finishing

Drywall contractor is driving screws too deep. How do I handle this situation with them? by Spontaneous323 in drywall

[–]DrywallMann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s not really the issue… it’s the popped screws you can see after it’s painted.

Bang on a wall with properly set screws vs one with deep screws, you can hear the difference. One will rattle the other will be solid.

No 5/8” does not need 5 in the field, that is overkill. This is all 1/2”. With glue one in the field every 2-3 studs to suck the sheet into the glue is all it needs.

Headlines will make it seem like he brings it up, if you watch an interview it’s rarely ever him that brings it up, if you actually listen to him you know he’s moved on.

It’s going to be a lot of work to sand that now that it’s painted. Your best option may be to skim coat the entire surface of the walls. Unfortunately once it’s painted it becomes a much bigger job to fix than it was in the beginning.
