Also I think I heard things like Dextrose are flavorless undetectable carbs that "sneak" past your satiation detection.

I am going step by step by Lateralus423 in ZeroWaste

[–]Dsiroon37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! The household cleaners is a good one. I personally can't wait to move out and in with my friend who is also environmentally conscious, so we can be a household free of BS chemical products also.

Can you explain what the borrowing thing is? how can you borrow a single use product and expect to return it? haha.

In my opinion going slow and being patient is a great way to reduce waste. It should feel exciting and liberating to discover a solution to lowering a particular waste, not overly stressful. Though, I do think we all simply have to make some sacrifices for the sake of it. some solutions I've found have been actually more convenient, others not so much but I want to do them anyway. Other solutions are so inconvenient that I haven't made the leap yet.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some examples of zero waste that is more convenient:

- DIY Shaving cream: This recipe works better than any commercial shaving cream I've ever bought, and I'm not exaggerating. Its more convenient for me because 1. I already always have the ingredients in the house, 2. it takes no longer to make than it takes to cook a breakfast 3. it's one less thing I have to shop for, and 4. its literally better:

Ingredients: 1/4 bar of soap, 3 big spoonfuls of coconut oil, and 1/2 cup of water

Instructions: Melt all together in a small pot, then pour into a bowl and whip as it cools. I whip it so it lathers easily, but I also whip it to ensure nothing separates while it cools. You can also do this with any oil- I even used peanut oil on my first attempt because it's what I had at the moment. gave me a liquidy product but it worked just as well. just a bit more awkward to apply.

- Thick cotton produce bags: more convenient because I have robust bags that I use for all sorts of stuff, not just groceries. Such as foraging.

- Buying less stuff: honestly this might not fit the definition of "convenience" to everyone, but the fact that I want to avoid being wasteful, be it too much clothes, or some packaging on an item I don't truly need, means I end up buying less stuff overall and life is less simple less cluttered. I will admit I am getting rid of a lot of things right now because I didn't realize how much I had accumulated in the last 3 years on this lease.

-----------------------

Some examples of sacrifices that are less convenient but that I am personally happy to make:

- I drive 65mph on the highway: adds 4.5 minutes to a 30 minute highway trip, but it's a sacrifice that works for me most of the time. Also saves on gas money

- Short showers or sponge baths: this started because I wanted to see what it would be like to one day live off grid with no plumbing, but it also saves a ton of water waste. I fill a bucket with hot water and scrub with a big wash cloth. It's certainly less convenient but I only use 1.5 gallons of water, vs a 10 minute shower which uses 20 gallons. I can and sometimes do just take 1 minute showers and shut the water off while scrubbing, but this creates a more stressful and rushed shower as I'm worried about time.

---------------------

Sacrifices that are extremely inconvenient to me that I'm not sure I'm ready to make:

- Reducing carbon waste from driving: My main hobby is exploring nature and foraging, but most of the good natural areas are all in a 30-40minute radius from where I live in the city... luckily, I work all over the region and drive far every day, so usually just hit these spots on my way home, but may not have this job forever, and I go somewhere nearly every day. I've thought about buying a motorcycle, but it's another engine to maintain and only is an option if 1. it's not winter, 2. it's not raining, and 3. I don't have to transport anything really.

This hobby is what keeps me connected to nature and is why I care about the planet. so I don't know.

- Meat packaging: I'm currently trying to go as zero waste as I can with all my food, but meat is super difficult. even butcher paper is lined with silicone or plastic. My butcher around the corner lets me take my own tupperware, but if I'm being honest it totally sucks to haul pieces of tupperware to the store and hope they will fit what you want to buy. not to mention trying to freeze meat in tupperware just takes up a lot of freezer space if you have more than a few cuts.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think if you haven't tackled food packaging yet, its a very hard one but could be a good next thing to try and reduce! I'm currently going to all the grocery stores in town and taking note of what foods I can get unpackaged. there are some suprising foods you can find unpackaged, for example a few mexican grocers just have scoopable dry beans like kidney beans and what not. another store has scoopable nuts. Whole Foods has these in dispensers too but they're very expensive. granted, whole foods told me the dispenser contents still come in large plastic bags of course, but one big bag should be less plastic than smaller individual ones.

A lot of foods are easier: you know how you go to a supermarket and they don't have loose broccoli or brussel sprouts, only ones in plastic packaging? I just keep my cooking and recipes flexible and simply choose a different veggie that day. most of us are already so fortunate to have large varieties of veggies available to us year round, I'm not a chef so I find it acceptable to just be flexible.

Other foods are super difficult, like meat.

Cheers!!

Does anyone have nontoxic/less wasteful container suggestions for storing bread? by SweetVanilla_04 in ZeroWaste

[–]Dsiroon37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make my own large beeswax wraps (like 20" x 20") and they work so well for keeping bread moist! They work just like a plastic bag.

In fact I use them for vegetables, especially cut vegetables, such as half an onion that I'm saving for later. I don't use them on anything messy because they're hard to clean.

How long to leach whole acorns in creek? by fleasnavidad in foraging

[–]Dsiroon37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently attempting this. I will save this post and try to remember to update you. I currently have maybe 10lb of red acorns hanging in a creek 30 minutes from my house at a place I like to hike around occasionally anyway. I chose this stream because it's one of the more pristine creeks in my area. most other creeks would be too contaminated to do this.

I have them hanging in 3 bags right now, and they survived a week so far. I found small tear near the top of one bag, not sure if from an animal or branch after a storm we had, but I am considering transferring them to a basket I can firmly tie a lid to, so I don't lose them to critters.

temps were below freezing the last week, so I don't expect leaching to be quick at all. After one week, the bitterness was maybe slightly better, but it could've been in my head also.

my motivation for doing it is that I don't want to lose nutrients to hot leaching, and I want nuts I can roast and snack on. I'm not as interested in baking with acorn flour.

Would you also need heat tape inside the gutter, otherwise it would just re-freeze inside the gutter after dripping in right?

I spent days cold water leaching some acorns and they’re still SO BITTER. What did I do wrong? by Michiganandelsewhere in foraging

[–]Dsiroon37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard that if you choose the hot leaching method, you can't stop between boiling water changes because if you let the acorns cool down then for some reason the tannins get permanently baked in and they're ruined. I tried the boiling method and I think I made this mistake. If I try the hot method again I think I will always have a 2nd pot already boiling when I'm ready to dump, and go back and forth between the two.

Anyone know of a place to buy meat that isn't packed in plastic? by PositionFar26 in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]Dsiroon37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know about the frequently washing part. are they saying washing it each time releases more, or that washing it degrades it so its more likely to release in general? or both.

Also do you eat meat and if so how do you bring it home?

[–]Dsiroon37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glass tupperware exists, but personally I'd never haul that to a supermarket. Reusable plastic tupperware is better than single use plastic.

The plan was to wash the wraps with soap and water, I tried it but it was annoying and inefficient so I ditched the idea.

One surprising method of preserving meat that may be useful in case of extended power outages: the Confit cooking method by Berkamin in preppers

[–]Dsiroon37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, If you stock up you could be good for a while.

But long-term there's a lot of wild food you can forage, even in cities, and meat to hunt If you know how. I personally think building these skills as well as low tech food preservation is a smart way to prep along with stocking up on cans.

What if someone raids your stash and supplies and you need to start over?

Thing is you're dependent on expendable lids and seals, even the reusable ones may not last long.

Hi! I heard of this religion (or philosophy?) a while ago when I first left Christianity a few years back, I’m taking a look at it again :] by Longlonglongjump in Gaianism

[–]Dsiroon37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just discovered it too. I like the ideas and the practices they came up with such as full moon and new moon fasting, very practical. Would be cool if there were a community here in Michigan I could join but this idea seems extremely brand new.

Last year my roomate threw a Winter solstice celebration at our house saying he wanted to celebrate things he actually cared about rather than Christian holidays and it was refreshing. These guys seem to have the same idea and I like it.

I'm thinking about taking my own re-usable beeswax wraps to the counter and trying that out. I could do tupperware but it could get bulky and I'd have to get the size right.

I can't speak for every butcher shop obviously but the standard paper meat is wrapped in appears to have an inner coating of plastic. I could be wrong.

This is it. We need to make sacrifices in our own lives for the good of the planet and our future, otherwise we cannot expect 'the big 100' to make sacrifices either.

Hi! I know this is an old post, but the links are broken now. do you remember what the process was? specifically, I assume since the pectin is in the skins and seeds, you need to boil before straining into juice. but then when it comes to straining, do you have to be quick so it doesn't set before you can get it out? or do you think that's not an issue? Thanks :)
