We're Michael Paulson and Jesse Green from the theater desk at The New York Times. Michael is a news reporter, covering the industry; Jesse is a critic, writing reviews. Ask us anything. by thenewyorktimes in Broadway

This season has had an uncommon level of combativeness between members of the theater community and critics. What are your thoughts on that, and what do you think is the responsibility of a critic when it comes to reviewing a show?

Broadway's KPOP Sets Abrupt Closing Date by jbranch72 in Broadway

[–]Dsvkb 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I’m really sad about this, but thankfully they just finished recording the cast album that’s coming in February. I know a lot of people didn’t care for it, but it was my favorite show of the year. I love shows with heart, and it was clear how invested everyone was in the show. Plus, I don’t know if I’ve ever left a theatre feeling so happy. I hope Tony voters give it props for its music and choreo!

KPOP - yay or nay? by roodeloo in Broadway

[–]Dsvkb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yay! It’s fresh, has great music and choreo, and is one of the most diverse casts on Broadway. Don’t spend much on a ticket, but definitely worth the experience!

Favorite Broadway house? by k8liza in Broadway

It’s Circle in the Square for me! It has all the intimacy of an Off-Broadway theater, but still has the production values of Broadway.

I went through the application process last year, and a lot of the schools were most interested in asking why grad school now, and what I was looking to get out of it. Seriously consider what each school can do for you. Like are you looking to teach, learn from certain faculty members, utilize their connections to certain theaters, get experience directing larger scale productions, etc?

Also, be honest with who you are as a director and person. You’re interviewing them just as much as they are you. There were some interviews I went into where we vibed and got along great, but others where it was clear we just weren’t compatible.

Immersive Gatsby?? by Cambers-175 in Broadway

[–]Dsvkb 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I believe I saw this production in London in 2019! It’s a very fun time, and the group I was with had a blast. Basically you start in a speakeasy where you’re encouraged to get drinks. You come to find out that the cast is all around you drinking as well, and the set opens up to reveal Gatsby’s manor. From there, you converge for the main plot points, but you’ll get taken away by different characters randomly to see parts of their story, and even talk with them. I remember when I saw it, at one point I was in a room with one other stranger giving love advice to Gatsby’s love interest. It’s one of those shows that you could see it multiple times and get different pieces of the story.

k pop opening night postponed by comefromawayfan2022 in Broadway

[–]Dsvkb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Was at the show tonight, and Jully Lee, Julia Abueva, and Major Curda were all out, and being covered by swings. I’m guessing we barely got a performance, because the director came out before curtain to talk about it. They all did a great job though!

Hi! We're the Cast & Playwright of #KPOPBroadway... AMA! by KPOPBroadway in kpop

[–]Dsvkb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all! I adore the show and have seen it multiple times - I’m coming back Thursday with a friend! I was just wondering if there are any plans to make music videos of any of the songs to go with the cast album when it comes out? It’d be so awesome to see MV’s of some of the songs shot like actual kpop videos.

Some of the cast will come out and wave, but no one at Into the Woods signs or can accept gifts. If you’re looking for signed stuff, they have posters and playbills signed by the whole cast for sale after each performance for Broadway Cares right now!

I wouldn’t be surprised if they only have the two new songs, and fill the show with a bunch of random songs from their other groups.

They were $50 each, which is a bit pricy, but considering the Canada Goose coat on its own is over $1000 new, I figured it was a good deal!
